Re: First Cousin Marriages in Colonial America Posted by: "C ROBBINS" candcn10ac@bellsouth.net Date: Sun Nov 8, 2009 7:26 am ((PST)) BEGIN Did a quick check of my data base (checking Rob(b)ins who married Rob(b)ins) and found the following: Nathanie Robins, b 5 Aug 1793, son of William Robins & Bethiah Vickrey md Nancy Robins, b 8 June 1797, dau of Absalom Robins & Mary Ogle END From: germyn [german@jarman.net] BEGIN Sent: Monday, November 28, 2005 7:56 PM This is another one of those rather twisted genealogies of the Southern Robbins family. Bethia Vickery was a granddaughter of John Nation and Bethia Robins. William Robins is a son of - well who do you want to believe? The stronger evidence seems to point to him as the son of William Robins and Frances Nation, but its also argued he was a son of Jacob Robbins - son of Richard. The children of Willliam Robbins and Bethia Vickery were: Abel Robbins b: 27 DEC 1779 in Randolph (Rowan) County,North Carolina Charity Robbins b: 18 OCT 1780 in Guilford,Randolph County,NC Benjamin Robbins b: 6 SEP 1783 in Guilford,Randolph County,NC Marmaduke Robbins b: 15 MAY 1786 in Franklin County,Virginia Jacob Robbins b: 15 MAY 1786 in Franklin County,Virginia Elizabeth Robbins b: 5 FEB 1788 in Franklin County,Virginia Mary Polly Robbins b: 9 APR 1791 in Franklin County,Virginia Nathaniel Robbins b: 5 APR 1793 in Franklin County,Virginia John Robbins b: 5 FEB 1795 in Franklin County,Virginia William H. "Spectacle Billy" Robbins b: 6 AUG 1797 in Franklin Co., VA Charlotte Robbins b: 3 OCT 1799 in Franklin County,Virginia Theodoshia Ann Robbins b: 20 MAY 1804 in Henry County,Kentucky Abel was estranged from William and long ago some started telling a tale that Bethia was married to two William Robbins - the first three children being the product of the first marriage and trying to accomodate the William Sr vs Jacob parentage. Fortunately, the Tennessee branches I'm working on probably are not affected by this twisted mess. But the list of children's names is interesting - looks like some of the names found in Benjamin's family...... Sent: Thursday, August 17, 2006 7:21 AM The William Robbins of Decatur Co., Indiana, wife was Bethia Vickery - a granddaughter of John and Bethia (Robins) Nation. William is believed to be a son of the Jacob Robbins I have identified as a son of Richard, but confusion about Bethia Vickery's son Abel Robbins has left a lingering uncertainty however about this relationship and any relationship to William Robins of Polecat Creek. But on the other hand an older William Robins of Polecat Creek in Randolph Co., NC, identified Abel Robins as his grandson in his 1786 will. This older William Robins of Polecat Creek is often confused with William Robins of Caraway Creek in Randolph Co - the latter is a son of Joseph Robins Jr (will dated 1754). William Robins of Polecat creek was married to Frances Nation - granddaughter of 4-Joseph ROBINS. William and Frances's oldest son was born before 1752 making the 1720s a reasonable estimate for William's birth. Does anybody see any clues here that would help attach this family to the tree? (Its hard not to notice the similar names among the grandchildren of 11-Benjamin ROBBINS). North Carolina is assumed. William, b 1761, had a brother Absolom Robbins who stated on Bethia's widow's pension application that he, Absolom, was born in 1765 in Randolph Co., NC (which would have been in Rowan at that time) Neither William nor Absolom are mentioned in the 1786 will of the older William Robbins who named Abel as his grandson. This family has a lot of peculiar stories associated with it. All claim Abel was estranged from his "step-father" so Bethia Vickery had to have been married twice and both times to a William Robbins - the first having died in the Rev. War after fathering Benjamin - her third child. But Benjamin's birth in Sept 1783 implies his father was still alive in November of 1782 which is over a year after the surrender of Cornwallis and 7 months after the last Tory activity in Randolph Co. in March 1782. And in her pension application Bethia only admits to marrying one William Robbins in 1779 and the 1779 date is confirmed by William's brother Absolom. William died in Decatur Co., Indiana, in 1834. BTW, Bethia Vickery was a daughter of Marmaduke Vickery and Elizabeth Nation who was a daughter of John Nation and Bethia Robins - dau of 4-Joseph Robins Sr. Absolom Robbins married Mary Ogle in 1787 in Franklin Co., VA. Their children were: Micajah ROBBINS b: 18 Aug 1788 in , Franklin, Virginia Elizabeth ROBBINS b: 18 Aug 1790 in , Franklin, Virginia George ROBBINS b: 1792 in , Franklin, Virginia Absolom ROBBINS b: 1794 in , Franklin, Virginia John ROBBINS b: 1796 in , Franklin, Virginia Nancy ROBBINS b: 8 Jun 1797 in , Franklin, Virginia Mahala ROBBINS b: 1802 in , Henry, Kentucky Charity ROBBINS b: 1805 in , Henry, Kentucky The parentage of the brothers William and Absolom is not clear. By association their father looks like he should be Jacob Robbins born bef 1735, son of Richard. But the 1786 will of the older William Robbins claiming Abel for a grandson confuses the question greatly. Concluding the existence of two Abels seems the easiest solution but there is no other evidence to support that either. I'm afraid I've digressed here quite far from the original question and didn't intend to dwell on the question of Williams vs Jacobs. Beyond them, does anybody see any clues here that would help attach this family to the earlier generations? (Its still hard not to notice the similar names among the grandchildren of 11-Benjamin ROBBINS). PS: The usual circulating list children of Jacob Robbins and wife Mary are: William ROBBINS b: 21 Sep 1761 in , Randolph (Rowan), North Carolina Absalom ROBBINS b: 11 Sep 1765 in , Randolph (Rowan), North Carolina Jacob ROBBINS b: 1767 in , Randolph (Rowan), North Carolina James ROBBINS b: 1771 in , Randolph (Guilford), North Carolina Mary ROBBINS b: 1774 in , Randolph (Guilford), North Carolina Martha "Massey" ROBBINS b: 1779 in , Randolph (Guilford), North Carolina Margaret ROBBINS b: 1784 in , Franklin, Virginia (I suspect this list should also include a Daniel b. c1766) And here is the 1786 will of William Robins: William Robins Last Will and Testament 8 October 1786, Randolph Co., NC (Original Will, North Carolina State Archives, C.R.X.291) Know all men by these presents that I William Robins of the County of Randolph in the State of north Carolina Blacksmith being under sum indisposion of Body But through the great goodness and mer Mercy of God having the free use of my understanding & being of & disposing mind & and memory and Calling to mind the uncertainty of this life and knowing it is appointed unto all men once to Die Doe Make ordain and appoint these presents to Contain my Last will and Testament in manner and form following---- Im presents my Soule I Recommend to God that Gave it and my Body to be decently buried at the discretion of my hir after named Executors and as for such worldly Estat as it hath pleased God to intrust me with I do dispose there of in manner & form following that is to say I do will and ordain that all my just debts & and funeral Expense be paid and defrayed within Convenant time after my Decease. And papers among the the New Jersey Supreme Court case files at the State Archives suggest to me that Joseph Robins was likely a criminal only in the eyes of his creditor and the sheriff he embarrassed. The paper also indicates that Joseph did not stay at liberty after his escape. I'll try to summarize the paper here: New Jersey Supreme Ct case file 23485, David Lyell v. Joseph Robins November Term 1732 "David Lyell complains of Joseph Robins otherwise called Joseph Robins of the County of Monmounth in the Province of New Jersey Yeoman in custody etc of a plea that he render unto him Two hundred pounds which to him he owes..." Following this are quotes of two promissory notes from Joseph Robins of Monmouth Co. to David Lyell, merchant, for one hundred pounds each dated 20 April 1728 and each to be repaid at 50 pounds 8 shillings per year and in full by 1 May 1730. _________ Perhaps more of the time line and disposition could be found in the minutes dockets, if they survive.
