What we know for certain is that Dale, through DNA testing is a descendant of Daniel Robins who came to America from Scotland (not by choice), lived in Connecticut, married Hope Potter, moved to New Jersey, and had a bunch of kids. We also know that our great great grandfather was William Robins (1817 - 1884) who was born in Canada and is buried in the Fonthill Cemetery, Fonthill, Canada. We believe that one or more of Daniel's descendants were Loyalists during the Reveloutionary War and migrated to Prince Edward Island shortly after the war. We suspect that our great great grandfather William is a descendant of one of the Robins' that left America for Canada at that time although they may have gone to Canada through some place other than Prince Edward Island. Also, we suspect that William's father's name was Timothy but are not yet certain of that. I have been in email contact with Sara Robbins Hoffman and will be receiving a copy of her book shortly. I have also emailed Mr. John Taylor requesting a copy of his book and I am hoping to get a response in the near future. Any information about our ancestors or how to get information about our ancestors is much appreciated. Thank you. This is what I know about your ancestor. William Robins was born about 1817 in Thorold. He died on 24 May 1884 in Thorold and his death certificate lists Thorold as his birthplace. (Source: Page 252, Roll MS935_39. Archives of Ontario. Registrations of Deaths, 1869-1934. Archives of Ontario, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Ancestry.com has images online.) In 1851, William farmed part of lot 158 in Thorold.(You can see this on the 1851 Agricultural census of Thorold. Source: Ancestry.com has images online.) By tracing the history of this property--lot 158 in Thorold--through Ontario land records, I was able to determine William's parents and grandparents. William received his part of lot 158 as inheritance through the will of his father, Joshua. William's mother name was Lania (William's brother James farmed the other part of lot 158 in 1851. He is also named in Joshua's will.) Joshua died in Thorold around 1833 and left the following will: 1833 Dec 9 (Source: Lincoln Co. Ontario Probate Records, Volume 4, p. 15, LDS film # 0579150) Probate of the last will and Testament of Joshua Robins of the Township of Thorold in the County of Lincoln in the District of Niagara and Province of Upper Canada Yeoman calling to mind the uncertainty of life and being weak in body but of sound disposing mind memory and judgment do make and publish this as my last Will and Testament in manner and form following. First I do direct my executors hereafter by me appointed to pay all my just debts and funeral expenses out of my personal property soon after my death. Secondly I give and devise lot number one hundred and fifty eight (158) in the township of Thorold unto my well beloved wife Lania during the time she remains my widow containing ninety acres of land for the support and upbringing of my children during their minority and at her death or marriage the said lot of land shall be divided between my three sons, William Robins, James Robins, and Isaac Robins to be divided in the following manner that is to say commencing at the south end of the said lot and giving my son James Robins one third of what land is south of the Canborough Road to have and to hold to him his heirs and assigns forever. I also give and devise a second share to my son Isaac Robins that is one third of what land is south of the Canborough Road to have and to hold to him his heirs and assigns forever. I also give and devise unto my son William Robins the remaining third between the Canborough Road and the north end of the said lot number 158 to have and to hold to him his heirs and assigns forever all of which lands shall come unto my three sons ___ in of their mother’s death or marriage. I also give and devise all the land I own in the north side of the Canborough Road to be equally divided between my before mentioned sons share and share alike to them their heirs and assigns forever to come into their possession at their mother’s death or marriage. Also I will and bequeath unto my daughter Lany Ann Robins fifteen pounds currency or in other words my three mentioned sons shall pay my said daughter five pounds each as legacy when she shall marry or come of age and whereas the deed given to my father by Joshua Robins of the Township of Thorold has never been registered for lots number one hundred and fifty nine (159) and [one hundred and] sixty (160) in the township of Thorold and as heir at law to the said deed I hereby authorize either of my executors to sign any instruments that may be necessary for the registering the said deed as heir at law. Lastly I do hereby ordain and appoint my well beloved wife Lania Robins and my brother James Robins as my executors to put this my last will and Testament in full forces according to the true meaning and intent thereof. Sealed signed and acknowledged as and for my last Will and Testament this ninth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty three and we being present and in presence of each other and at the request of the Testator have subscribed our names as witness thereof. I'm still trying to determine how my Clarks are related to the Robins.) Joshua received this property from his father as devised in his father's will of 1814. Joshua's father was Blatchley Loyd Robins. Blatchley wrote the following will in 1814; however, the will was not recorded until 1863. At that time, John Robins, son of Blatchley and one of the devisees in the will had to provide an oath that the record was true. The other two original witnesses had died by then. He petitioned the Crown for land on 16 Aug 1794. (This petition is a settler's petition--not a Loyalist's petition.) He was assigned and allowed to settle lots 158 and 194 in Thorold. (Source: Upper Canada Land Records, Assignments Record group: MF MS 81 Volume 050, page 28 Note: This was the same day that John Clark and another Joshua Robins made their Settler's petitions.) Blatchley received the patents to these lots on 01 Sept 1797. (Source: Welland Co. Ontario Land Record Indexes Abstract index books of Thorold 1798-1957 FHL US/CAN Film 170976) There were at least 3 Robins adults who settled in Thorold: -- Blatchley Loyd Robins (as described here) -- Joshua Robins. Petitioned for a settler's grant on same day as Blatchley. He settled lots 159 and 160, but later deeded lot 159 to Blatchley. -- Sarah Robins, a widow who came to Upper Canada about 1793 with "3 sons and 3 daughters" and petitioned for a settler's grant in 1796. She settled lots 192 and 193 in Thorold. Some of my research seems to indicate that Blatchley might be one of Sarah's 3 sons...but I have not proved that yet. I believe all of these Robins are related to two men, Daniel Robins and Joshua Robins, who supposedly married Blatchley sisters: Sarah Blatchley married a Daniel Robins and Mary Blatchley married a Joshua Robins. The Blatchleys were from Morris Co. New Jersey. But I have found very little about them. I hope this gives you something to start with! As I mentioned, my interest is in the fact that my ancestors (John Clark and his son Daniel) are always with these Robins families of Thorold. I think they might have known each other before they arrived in Upper Canada, sometime before August 1794. But...my research continues!! In 1794 when Blatchley and Joshua made their land petitions, John Clark, Daniel's father, made his petition too.
