From: Gary Robins [gdrobins@robinsgenealogy.net] Sent: Monday, December 05, 2005 7:52 PM BEGIN I can show you that John Robins ( -1789 NJ) = = Elizabeth Alexandria. can not be the son of Jonathan Robins (1694NJ-1774NJ) Alexandria. The 14 July 1789 will of John Robins names his wife Elizabeth and children Jonathan, Robert, Mary, Lydia, Rachael, & John. It states that the son Robert is to go live with his Grandfather Robins to learn the weavers trade. This would not be possible if Roberts grandfather had died in 1774. Furthermore, It is believed by descendents that Elizabeth's maiden name was Green, but we haven't been able to find documentation supporting this belief. It is a fact however that her sons Jonathan, Robert and John and her daughter Rachael gave children the middle name Green. I am also unaware of Rachael's marriage to Aaron FERLSORA, which doesn't invalidate the information, However I believe she was certainly married to Abraham Smith and they had one child baptized Eliza Green Smith and another Robert Green Smith. The baptisms are available on the Raub site that Marshall Lake provided links to a couple of days ago. John names his children in his will. Jonathan appears to be eldest as he is named 1st and the will states that he can be put out to trade. 2. Robert appears to be younger & Johns will states that his son Robert is to live with his grandfather and learn the weavers trade. 3. IV Jonathan outlived John by about 7 years, so he could be Roberts grandfather. I believe that he lived in Alexandria Township. 4. The estate of IV Jonathan Sr. include baskets of wool cloth, a brush for separating long wool fibers from short wool fibers, 2 spinning wheels and a loom, all tools of a weaver. There is a point of land named Robbins Reef-- named in honor of the Commander.3He served in the Legislature from 1828 to 1831. He was living in the household of Spencer Smith in the 1850 Census.2 He may be the Jonathan Robbins who served as a member of the Council of New Jersey in 1829/30 and the Assembly of New Jersey 1827/28.9 From the Hunterdon Newspaper, 25 March 1884: Susan Hager, a colored woman of Bloomsbury, aged 84 years, is dead. "Aunt Suke" as she was familiarly called was a slave for about twenty-five yeers, being purchased by Colonel Robbins for the sum of $100, when she was five years old. At the time of her marriage her master gave her her freedom. "Aunt Suke" nursed all the children of the late Colonel of which Mrs. Smith, widow of Spencer C. Smith, was one, and is a resident of Bloomsbury. Since the death of her father and husband, Mrs. S. has always seen that "Aunt Suke" was well cared for and it was a great pleasure for the old lady to spend a few days with Mrs. Smith and her family. Colonel Robbins, Mrs. Smith's father, fought during the War of 1812, and had command of the forces at Sandy Hook where a British fleet attempted to land. A reef there is known as Robbins Reef, in honor of the brave officer. The report of the commissioners appointed to divide the lands late of Isaac Robins deceased was presented. The metes & bounds of Jonathan Robins, Rachael Smith (w/o Amos), formerly Rachael Robins, & Abigail Robins, all of whose shares were purchased by Jonathan Robins, began at a store in the Great Road near the Hickory Tavern in a line of the West Jersey Society's land & totaled about 100 acres; Isaac Robins share began on the northeast side of the sd. Isaac Robins, dec'd farm & ran along the Great Road and Jonathan Robins. The share totaled 66 acres with premises exclusive of one acre formerly sold by Mr. Robins. The metes and bounds of Mary Robins were along Jonathan Robins and Dianna Garrison and contained 38.8 acres and premises. Dianna Garrison's share began at the northeasterly corner of the farm and ran along Col. Beaver's line and totaled 38.8 acres with premises. From Hunterdon County, New Jersey Taxpayers: 1785 Alexandria Robins, Jonathan Jr. Susanna Thomas There are 2 things to note: - Jonathan, son of Isaac, bought the property of his siblings that they had inherited from Isaac's estate. The total property mentioned is 243.6 acres if I calculated correctly. - in 1785, in Alexandria Township, there is only Jonathan, son of Isaac, Susanna, wife of Isaac, and Thomas. It is the militia list. I really wonder if this is Greenwich township. I don't know of a "Grannage" township. And there is a list for Wantage twp. so it isn't that.) To : Garry Heagy Cc : Tracey Marcelo , Robbins Family Subject : Re: [Robbins Family Society] Jonathan ROBINSes, Alexandria Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ So, Garry, by this it sounds like you feel the Jonathan who married Mary HUFF is the son of Isaac ROBINS (d 1783)? This makes sense since it seems the Jonathan who married Mary HUFF is the Jonathan who brought the original 1751 homestead back together. I have Jonathan, son of Isaac, as always living in Alexandria Twp. But, in my tree I have Jonathan, son of Jonathan, as marrying Mary HUFF. So, I could definitely be wrong on this. Date: Tue, 14 Dec 2021 20:01:31 +0000 From: jkarthur@charter.net The Green name was decided upon by my cousin, Patricia Laubscher. I have never seen any proof that her name is Green. There are some family connections and it seems possible. Her son's middle name is Green. That is the biggest clue. But, you don't need to worry about it because I don't think there is such a document. Just one last question (for now :), Judy, what do you have that says the John ROBINS who died 1789 married Elizabeth GREEN? I realize that John's will names his wife as Elizabeth, but what tells you her birth name is GREEN ? How was this constructed? I'd like to share some thoughts. 3. I don't think Rachel ROBINS =1799=Aaron FERLSORA* is correct. where did this come from? It is my belief that this Rachel Robins, (daughter of John & Elizabeth) married Abraham Smith. a) Greenwich Presbyterian Church marriage: Jan 6, 1805 Abraham Smith married Rachel Robbins b) Greenwich Presbyterian Church babtism: Smith, ----- & Rachel, son John Robbins (Smith), 1810. I believe named after Rachels father John. c) Greenwich Presbyterian Church babtism: Smith, Abrm. & Rachel, dau. Eliza Green (Smith), 1817 I believe named after Rachels mother Elizabeth. It is also believed that Rachels mothers maiden name was Green. d) Greenwich Presbyterian Church babtism: Smith, Abrm. & Rachel, son Robert Green (Smith), Mar. 1821 I believe named after Rachels brother Robert and mothers maiden name. 4. I believe that Lydia Robins,(daughter of John & Elizabeth) was married to John Barber. a) Greenwich Presbyterian Church babtism: Barber, John & Lydia, son Robert Robins (Barber), Oct'r, 1802. I believe named after Lydias brother Robert. b) Greenwich Presbyterian Church babtism: Barber, Lydia, dau. Mary Robbins (Barber), June 6, 1808 I believe named after Lydias sister Mary. 5. Robert Robins, (son of John and Elizabeth) was born circa 1777. He married Margaret Sharps. a) Greenwich Presbyterian Church babtism: Robins, Robert & Margaret, (1st) son John, Jan'r 9, 1803 I believe named after Roberts father John. Middle name was Sharps. b) Greenwich Presbyterian Church babtism: Robbins, Mrs. Robert, (4th) son Peter Sharp(s) (Robins), 1812. I believe named after Margarets brother Peter Sharps. c) Greenwich Presbyterian Church babtism: Robins, Robert & wife, child's name forgotten, Oct. 1821 This would be their 4th son Jacob Sharps Robins. Margaret had a brother named Jacob and there are baptisms for numerous Jacobs in the Greenwich Presbyterian Church Sharps descendents. 6. John ROBINS, (son of John and Elizabeth) was probably married to Jane Vanhorn. a) Greenwich Presbyterian Church marriage: Jan 1811 John Robbins married Jane Vanhorn. b) Greenwich Presbyterian Church babtism: Robbins, John & wife, son Jacob VanDorn (Robins), 1812. I believe that Jacob Vandorn was probably Jacob Vanhorn after Janes father. c) Sussex County Will abstracts VANHORN, Jacob of (?). 1663S - W. 08 Aug 1817; Filed 30 Sep 1819. Son: John D. Vanhorn. Daughters: 2 unnamed. [Sussex Co. Marriage Book A - Jane Vanhorn to John Robbins - 20 Jan 1811.] Others: Son-in-law, George CREVELING, Son-in-law, John G. ROBINS, and six gr-children: George Jacob,Mary Ann, Sarah Jane and Elinor, ch of George CREVELING, and Jacob Vanhorn and Jonathan ROBINS, ch of John G. ROBINS. Executors: John D. VANHORN and John G. ROBINS. Witnesses: Henry HANKINSON, Francis NIXON, and John EVELAND (The key here is Johns middle initial. Of the NJ Robins It appears that only descendents of John and Elizabeth used G(reen) as a middle name). 7. Jonathan Robbins, (son of John and Elizabeth) was married to Mary (some believe Sharps and postulate that she was a sister of Roberts wife Margaret. a) Jonathan is supposed to be buried next to his wife Mary and son Jonathan Green Robbins in the Greenwich Presbyterian Cemetary. (Note the "Green" for sons middle name indicates that this Jonathan was a son of John and Elizabeth Robins. b) Division of Estate Papers for Jonathan Robbins name a son John Sharps Robins. Since John is supposed to be the eldest son he was likely named after Jonathans father. c) Division of Estate Papers for Jonathan Robins also name daughters Christianna Stewart and Mary V(anover) Smith. Because Jonathans and Marys children had the middle names Sharps and Vanover and a daughter Cristianna that some believe that Mary was a daughter of John Sharps and Christianna Van Over, and hence a sister of Margaret Sharps. However the will of John Sharps does not name a daughter Mary. I believe however that John Sharps had a brother named Jacob whose daughter was named Mary. I don't know what the name of Jacobs wife was. 2-Daniel's 2nd wife=1693=Mary Jonathon ROBINS (1694NJ-1774NJ).........................................................Alexandria ---Jonathon ROBINS (17__-1796NJ)..........................................................Alexandria ------Jonathon ROBINS (17__-1796NJ) died same day as Dad ---Isaac ROBINS (c1740's-1784NJ)=17__=Susannah (17__-1817NJ)..Alexandria ------Jonathon ROBINS (c1760's- ------Rachel ROBINS (c1760's- )= =Amos SMITH ------Abigail ROBINS (c760's ------Diana ROBINS (c1770's- )= = ____ GARRISON ------Mary ROBINS (c1770's- )= = _____ JANNARD ------Isaac ROBINS (1778NJ-18__ )=1802=Mary HINER......................to Ohio in 1818 ---John ROBINS ( -1789NJ) = = Elizabeth.............................................Alexandria ------Jonathon ROBINS (c1760's ------Robert ROBINS ------Mary ROBINS ------Lydia ROBINS ------Rachel ROBINS =1799=Aaron FERLSORA ------John ROBINS..........................................................................................Knowlton *If Rachel had been married to Aaron Ferlsora in 1799, and then remarried after his death to Abraham Smith; would the marriage be recorded Abraham Smith = = Rachel Robins, or Abraham Smith = = Rachel Ferlsora? Thank you for your work on this line. My question in general in studying the outline is how do we connect 2-Daniel's son Jonathan Robins to his sons Jonathan, Isaac & John? They aren't named in his will since he died intestate. It would seem to me that there should be a record to base this on. Maybe there is & I haven't seen it or possibly we will find one. I don't know. I've been carrying Isaac & Asubia as the parents of Jonathan, father of Robert. This could easily be in error as I never had a source for the proposed linkage. I'm definitely not married to this concept, and Jonathon ROBINS (17__-1796NJ) could easily be the son of 2-Daniels's son Jonathan as suggested by John T. I believe that 2-Daniels son Jonathan transferred land to his son Isaac. I think that Marshall Lake has information on this and I believe a later Division of Estate by Isaacs daughter Diana "Robins" Garrison that involved the same property. This is off the top of my head, & I don't have the facts. END
