My "grandmother" Jane (GARRISON) KRUSEN was probably the dau. of one of these gentlemen: 6. Derrick/Richard-6 Krusen (Francis-5, Derrick-4, Francis-3, Derrick-2, Garret-1) was born in Washington, (then Sussex, since 1825) Warren County, New Jersey on 17 May 1779; he died in the Town of Greenwood, Steuben County, New York on 24 September 1846. Derrick/Richard was married in Washington, New Jersey on 8 January 1800 to Jane Garrison: "Married Wenesday [sic], the 8th January 1800, Mr. Derrick Cruzen to Miss Jane Garrison both of Mansfield, Montsy Reading" (Marriage Book A, 26, Sussex County Court House, Newtown, New Jersey); Montgomery Reading later served as the Sussex County Judge in 1809 (Snell). Jane was born, perhaps in Bethlehem Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, in 1781; she died in the Town of Greenwood, New York on 10 June 1851. It is virtually certain that Jane was the daughter of a John Garrison. On 13 August 1803, John Garrison "Senor" and John Garrison "Junor" witnessed a deed in which "Derick Kruser of Mansfield and Jane his wife" sold land to John Johnson of Independence Township. On 13 January 1816, John Garrison witnessed a land purchase by Derrick Krusen in Independence Township (Sussex County Deeds, G2:176). On 2 November 1818, John Garrison Jr. witnessed a land sale by Derrick Krusen (Sussex County Deeds, K4). John Garrison witnessed the will of Derrick/Richard's father, Francis-5 Krusen in 1819. Recall that Derrick/Richard's father, Francis resided in Bethlehem Township, Hunterdon County from the time of the Revolutionary War until 1790. No doubt, Derrick/Richard spent his younger years in Bethlehem; perhaps he became acquainted with his future wife there. In Hunterdon County New Jersey Taxpayers 1778- 1797, in Bethlehem Township are listed "John Garison" in 1778; "John Garrison" in 1780; "John Garison Sr.," "John Garison Jr.," and "George Garison" in 1785; "John Garreson," "John Garreson Jr.," "George Garreson," and "Jeams Garreson" in 1789; "John Garreson" and "George Garreson" in 1790. A George Garrison died in Bethlehem Township on 22 February 1856 leaving eleven children including sons named John, Sutphin, Samuel, and Joseph. Perhaps the "Jeams Garreson" who resided in Bethlehem in 1789 was identical with the James Garrison who is buried in the remote and rural Garrison-Tharp Cemetery there. James was born in February 1768 and died in December 1825. Martha, widow of John Garrison, died 2 July 1866, aged 76 years (Jackie Lubinski, email correspondence [26 October 1999]). On 13 January 1816, Benejah Justin and Sarah of Independence Township sold 20 acres in Independence Township to Derrick Krusen of Mansfield Township for $560. This transaction was witnessed by George Thompson and John Garrison (Sussex County Deeds, G2:176). Around 1817, they moved to New York State along with other families from northwestern New Jersey. On 2 November 1818, Derrick Krusen of New York State, late of Independence Township, Benejah Justin and Sarah of Independence Township and John Justin of Franklin Township, sold 45 acres in Independence Township to Andrus Rose of Newton for $120. John Garrison Jr. and William Little Jr. witnessed this transaction. This property bordered that of Thomas Fleming and Aaron Buskirk; it was the "same lot conveyed to John Linn Esq./Sheriff to Rose, executor of property of Benejah [Prinston] at the suit of Matthias Williamson." John Garrison Sr. was certainly born circa 1740 or earlier based on the fact that his son, John Garrison Jr. was married to Mary Barbar in 1780. John was possibly born circa 1723 or earlier based on the 1773 court appearance of a John Garrison Jr. . A John Garrison witnessed the will of Derrick/Richard's father, Francis Krusen, in 1819 Early Garrisons of Hunterdon County, New Jersey The follow records pertain to early Garrisons of Hunterdon County, New Jersey. It is impossible to say yet whether any of these pertain to John Garrison of Bethlehem Township or not. The name, John Garrison, appears early in the records of Hunterdon County, New Jersey. A John Garrison, son of Lambert Garrison, came from Staten Island to Hunterdon County around 1720 with Duncan and Mary (Garrison) Oliphant; Mary was another child of Lambert. This John Garrison was born circa 1700 or earlier. Here is an abstract of the Will of Court Coule of Somerset Co., a yeoman. It is dated 25 April 1747. He lists his wife, Coartrout? [Gertrude?]. In 1780, "John Garrison" had 2 horses, 7 horned cattle, 7 hogs and a sawmill. >From the follwing marriage record, I was able to deduce that John Garrison Jr. was born circa 1760 or earlier and therefore, his father, John Garrison Sr. was born circa 1740 or earlier. #287; Jno & Jno Garison, Jr & Sen, both of the Township of Bethlehem, County of Hunterdon... [w] Robert McShane signatures of the bondsmen: John Garrison Jr, John Garrison nj/marriage/njmar) Mary Barbar was probably identical with Mary, the daughter of Matthias and Jane (Foster) Barbar, born in 1755 (Van Buskirk Bible). Matthias Barbar, innkeeper, died in Hardwick Township, (then Sussex, now) Warren County, New Jersey before 5 September 1764 (New Jersey Documents--Calendar of Wills). Matthias's widow, Jane (Foster) Barbar married second Joseph Dawson. Jane (Foster) (Barbar) Dawson married third, on 30 January 1772, Daniel Van Buskirk of Bethlehem Township (Van Buskirk Bible). Hence, Mary (Barbar) Garrison probably lived in the Buskirk household in Bethlehem Township prior to her marriage to John Garrison Jr. in 1780. In Hunterdon County New Jersey Taxpayers 1778-1797, "John Garison Sr.," "John Garison Jr.," and "George Garison" were listed in 1785; hence, all were born circa 1765 or earlier. "John Garreson," "John Garreson Jr.," "George Garreson," and "Jeams Garreson" were listed in 1789; hence, all were born circa 1769 or earlier. "John Garreson" and "George Garreson" were listed in 1790. The curiously named "Garreson Barber" also resided in Bethlehem Township in 1790. Assuming that "John Garreson" and "John Garreson Jr." are the same pair cited in the 1780 marriage record above, it follows that John Garrison Sr. was born circa 1738 or earlier. Nathaniel Barber, son of Matthias and Jane (Foster) Barbar, also resided in Bethlehem Township in 1785 and 1790. On 1 March 1793, Nathaniel Barber was elected Lieutenant and John Garrison, Jr. was elected Ensign of the Second Company of the Bethlehem Militia (Hiram Deats, "The Hunterdon Militia, 1792," Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey (9:45). The close association of Nathaniel Barber and John Garrison Jr. as leaders of the local militia provides additional evidence that Mary (Barbar) Garrison was the daughter of Matthias and Jane (Foster) Barbar. The "List of all militia enrolled in the different townships in the County of Hunterdon" was intended to include "every free and able bodied white male citizens between the ages of 18 and 45." In Bethelem Township, were listed Nathaniel Barber; Thomas Foster; and George, James, John and William Garrison. Nathaniel Foster and John Garrit were residents of Amwell Township. All of these men were born between 1747 and 1774. George Garrison died in Bethlehem Township on 22 February 1856 leaving eleven children including sons named John, Sutphin, Samuel, and Joseph. Assuming that the first named son was the eldest, it is possible that George was the son of John Garrison Sr. Sutphin is obviously derived from the Sutphen family of Hunterdon County who, in turn, were doubtless descendants of Dirck Jansen Van Sutphen and Lysbeth VanNuys of Flatbush, New York. George's wife or mother may have been a Van Sutphen descendant. In 1792, James and Dinah (Robins) Garrison gave birth to a son John Garrison. Assuming that he was the eldest son as typically presented in the family group, it is possible that James Garrison, 1789 resident of Bethlehem Township, was also a son of John Garrison Sr. Lydia Garrison, born 23 November 1808, daughter of George and Mary (Johnson) Garrison, married William Van Syckel. This George Garrison was born circa 1788 or earlier. William was the son of Aaron Sr. and Catharine (Opduyke) Van Syckel; his sister Mercy (1796-1850) married a John Garrison (Laurie Lightfoot, correspondence, 20 February 2002). John Garrison Jr. (John Sr., ...) was born circa 1758 or earlier and perhaps prior to 1753; he may have been living as late as 1819 when a John Garrison witnessed the will of Francis Krusen. When of Bethlehem Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, he was married by a license dated 29 March 1780 to Mary Barbar. She was born circa 1760 or earlier and was probably identical with Mary Barbar, the daughter of Matthias and Jane (Foster) Barbar, who was born in 1755 (Van Buskirk Bible). In 1773, a "John Garrison, Jr." was living in Amwell Township when he was summoned to appear in court for case #34852 (Phyllis B. D'Autrechy, More Records of Old Hunterdon County [1998]). At this time, it is impossible to say whether or not this John Garrison Jr. is the same one that married Mary Barbar. If so, he was probably born circa 1753 or earlier which matches well with Mary's birth in 1755. In addition to the evidence presented above, the speculation that Mary (Barbar) Garrison was the daughter of Mathias and Jane (Foster) Garrison is also supported by circumstantial evidence pertaining to her probable daughter, Jane (Garrison) Krusen. Jane was born in 1781; it would have been in keeping with naming patterns of the era that Jane, as the couple's eldest daughter, was named after her maternal grandmother, Jane (Foster) (Barbar) (Dawson) Van Buskirk. In any case, it is virtually certain that Jane (Garrison) Krusen was the daughter of a John Garrison. In (then Sussex, now) Warren County, New Jersey, on 13 August 1803, John Garrison "Senor" and John Garrison "Junor" witnessed a deed in which "Derick Kruser [sic] of Mansfield and Jane his wife" sold land to John Johnson of Independence Township. On 13 January 1816, John Garrison witnessed a land purchase by Derrick Krusen in Independence Township (Sussex County Deeds, G2:176). On 2 November 1818, John Garrison Jr. witnessed a land sale by Derrick Krusen (Sussex County Deeds, K4). A John Garrison witnessed the will of Derrick/Richard's father, Francis Krusen, in 1819. Francis Krusen, a native of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, resided in Bethlehem Township, Hunterdon County from the time of the Revolutionary War until 1790. No doubt, Derrick/Richard spent his younger years in Bethlehem; perhaps he became acquainted with his Jane Garrison there. Based on multiple points of association between Jane (Garrison) Krusen and John Garrison Sr. and Jr. and connections to Bethlehem Township, it is not unreasonable to speculate that Jane was the daughter of John Jr. and Mary (Barbar) Garrison. Notably, Derrick/Richard and Jane (Garrison) Krusen named their eldest children John and Mary. Probable child of John Jr. and Mary (Barbar) Garrison; there may have been others: i. [Jane, b. probably in Bethlehem Township, Hunterdon Co., NJ 1781; d. Town of Greenwood, Steuben Co., NY 10 June 1851; m. Court House, Newtown, NJ), b. in Washington, Warren Co., NJ 17 May 1779, d. Krusen Cemetery, Krusen's Corners, West Greenwood Hill, Town of Greenwood, NY; Jane may have been named after her maternal grandmother, Jane (Foster) (Barbar) (Dawson) Van Buskirk; my direct ancestors; see Gerret Dircksen Croesen of Brooklyn, New York for more information.] END
