findagrave.com ... BEGIN John Prall Birth: 1764 Amwell Hunterdon County New Jersey, USA Death: 1820 John Prall was born ca. 1764 in Amwell, Hunterdon County, New Jersey and ca. 1820. He married Mary --, perhaps ca. 1785-1786. This John Prall should not be confused with the John Prall who was born on 20 Sep 1756 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey and died 22 Sep 1831 in Prallsville New Jersey, whose widow Amelia Coryell filed for a Revolutionary War widow's pension (W3297). Some of the following information may pertain to this second John Prall. The first time he was taxed was when he turned 21. In July, 1785, he appears on the Tax Ratables of Tewksbury Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey (page 10) as John Peraul, a single man with a horse. In Jul-Aug 1786, he is listed (page 5) as John Peraul, 100 acres val/26, 4 horses, and 2 cows. He is no longer listed as a single man. There was another 1786 ratable in which a notation had been made that he failed to pay his tax, and a demand was issued. There is no record of payment. He was renting this land from John Stevens of Lebanon Township, Hunterdon County. On Feb 19, 1787, this land was advertised for sale, but the ad did not indicate the date and place of the sale. However, the ad did give the township as Tewkesberry, farm #42, with tenants John Prawl and B. Thorp. (Independent Gazetteer, Philadelphia, and New Jersey Journal, Elizabethtown, Feb 28, 1787) The land was sold, so John rented another farm in Tewksbury Township. The Ratable (page 6) for Jul-Aug 1789 lists John Prawl, 70 acres val/31, 2 horses and 2 cows. The Ratable for Jun-Aug 1790 lists Jn Prawl, no land, householder, 1 cow and 1 covering horse (stud). This indicates that the family was living with someone else, or on property on which someone else was paying taxes. There is no record that John Prall ever purchased or owned land in Hunterdon County. Tax Ratables for Bernards Township, Somerset County, New Jersey for Aug 1792 and Sep 1793 show John Prall, 116 acres, 1 horse and 1 cow. The military census for Somerset County, New Jersey in 1793 lists John Prall, Bernards Township. In Sep 1794, John Prall paid tax on 166 acres and 1 cow. In Sep 1796, John Prall paid only the householder tax levied on married men with no land. There is no record that he owned any land in Somerset County. He may have been employed as a farm worker, or had some trade to supplement his income. The Tax Ratable for Piscataway Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey for Jul-Aug 1797 lists John Prall as a householder, paying tax of 2 shillings and 6 pence. On Oct 4, 1797, John Prall signed as a witness giving a Power of Attorney to Daniel Winant of Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey by Lewis Prall of Staten Island, Richmond County, New York. (Daniel Winant was Lewis' brother-in-law.) (Middlesex County Deed Book 2:174) The Tax Ratables of East Windsor Township, Middlesex County, for Jun-Aug 1809 (page 19) list John Prall with 95 acres, 1 horse, 2 cows, and 1 dog. The Ratables for the same location for Jun-Aug 1810 list John Prall with 47 acres, 2 horses, 3 cows, and 1 dog. On Apr 6, 1813, John Prall of Freehold Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey was listed as one of the heirs of Cornelius Prall, deceased of Amwell Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He signed the agreement with the widow, Cornelius' third wife Christianna Prall, as she accepted money and property in lieu of her dower. (Hunterdon County Deed Book 21: 115) On Apr 9, 1813, the heirs of Cornelius Prall, deceased, sold the 90 acres in Amwell Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey to Elisha Sharp. John Prall and his wife Mary received $700. On Sep 14, 1816, John Prall of Trenton, New Jersey sold his interest in the land granted to Capt. Edward Prall, deceased, of Harford, Maryland, for his service in the Revolutionary War. It was Bounty Land Warrant #1729 for 300 acres located in Muskingum County, Ohio. The land had been sold to Peter Mills of Zanesville, Ohio and the full price was $300. John accepted $17 and was the only heir of Cornelius Prall, deceased, (brother of Capt. Edward Prall) to claim his share of the estate. The remaining sum of $283 due to the other children of Cornelius was never claimed.
