BEGIN Name: Abraham Hess Sex: M Birth: MAR 1762 in Bedford Co, PA Death: BET 5 AND 21 MAR 1821 in Bedford Co, Pennsylvania Burial: Levering Cemetery, Belfast Twp, Bedford Co., PA Occupation: Farmer Will: 21 MAR 1821 Note: Source: Ron L. ROSE. 2/07/01. Abraham Hess was born circa 1763. He married Ann Fisher, daughter of John Fisher and Frances "Frankey" Kuhl, circa 1785 at Bedford Co., Pennsylvania. He first appears on a list of the inhabitants of Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania, made subject by law to the performance of the militia duty, taken by Peter Smith the 3rd February 1789. By 1798, Abraham resided in Belfast Twp., Bedford Co., (now Fulton Co.,) Pennsylvania with his wife Ann the daughter of John and Frances (Kuhl) Fisher. He owned his home, a house sized 22' X 20' valued at $16.00, a barn sized 33' X 22' on three hundred acres of land valued at $450.00. He purchased two hundred acres of land for ‹10 from the heirs of his deceased father-in-law John Fisher. Abraham and other Fisher heirs also sold land to Peter Fisher, Jacob Fisher and to Paul Fisher's Widow. , , William Hess and John Fisher bought land as executors of Paul Fisher's Will. These purchases and sales appear to be a release of divers of the heirs of John Fisher. Abraham does not appear in the census records until the census of 1800 in Belfast Twp. From the U.S. Census records of 1800 and 1810 we see that Abraham and Ann had seven sons under seventeen years of age and three daughters under seventeen years of age. These children have previously been identified in "The Hess Family Book." Abraham resided in the county at the time of his death. He left a will which was proven on 21 March 1821 at Bedford Co., Pennsylvania. , Among these estate papers was a letter dated 17 April 1834 from Ann (Fisher) Hess to Jacob Fisher. In this note she questions whether there is anything still forthcoming from Abraham's estate Jacob Fisher reply included an accounting of loans that he had made to her and her sons, a judgment related to their mother's estate against her nephew, Paul Fisher, and various debts that Jacob Fisher had paid for her. One included that to a Phoebe Hess whose relationship to her or to Jacob Fisher is unknown. He was buried in March 1821 at Levering Cemetery, in Belfast Twp., Bedford Co., Pennsylvania. Ann Fisher was born circa 1770 at Bedford Co., Pennsylvania. In the Hunterdon County, New Jersey Surrogate Receipts Book, Ann (Fisher) Hess of Bedford County, Pennsylvania, daughter of Frances (Kuhl) Fisher of said County who is named in the will of Paul Kuhl deceased as the sister of said deceased and having acknowledged receipt of $31.25. She died after 1834 and before 1851. Then in 1851, presumably after the death of Ann (Fisher) Hess, a Dennis Hess filed a Petition for Partition on the behalf of the heirs of Abraham Hess. In this document names all of the children of Abraham and Ann (Fisher) Hess. "Supplement to The Hess Family In America" (1984) by Barbara Allison ==================================================== The information on the children was obtained by Barbara Allison in 2003 from the family Bible of Ann (Fisher) Hess, courtesy of Mrs. Rachel Hess of Charleston, West Virginia. Abraham did not died March 2, 1821, for he wrote his will on 5 March 1821 (Source Ref: Bedford Co., PA. Will Book 2, p. 50) and the will was probated on 21 March 1821 (Source Ref: Bedford Co., PA. Will, Probate & Estate Records, Microfilm #1821-0013). All we know for certain is that he died between 5 March and 21 March 1821. As to the date of birth of Abraham Hess from the family Bible record we know he was born in the month of March in 1762 however, as to the day it could be the 2 or the 22.
