Buried Glenwood Cemetery, Troy (Bradford Journal, Towanda, Pennsylvania, Thursday, September 30, 1897). Jacob Fries died at Columbia X Roads Sept. 13, 1897 aged 85 yrs, 9 mos & 7 days. Mr. Fries was the son of James Fries and was born in Sussex Co., N.J. In 1837 his father moved from New Jersey and settled near Aspinwall Corners in Wells Township, Pa. He brought his entire family with him, consisting of 4 sons and 7 daughters, except 2 dau. who died in childhood. The only surviving member of the family at the present time is Miss Eliz. Fries who lives not far from Gillett, aged 87 years. In 1839 Mr. Fries married Katie Besley who died some years ago. Subsequent to the death of his first wife, he married Miss Mary Califf of Smithfield, who survives him. In 1845 he settled on a farm about 1 mile west of Col. X Roads on which or near which he lived most of the time till his decease. He leaves two adopted children Abraham Fries and Minnie Cooper, now Mrs. Edmond Carnwright at whose home he died. Mr. Fries was 52 years a Disciple of Christ, having been brought to a knowledge of the truth, as it is in Jesus, under the ministry of Elder Mansfield. He was a man of faith and prayer and died trusting only in Christ for salvation. His funeral was held from the church in Col. X Roads on the 15th instant his former pastor Rev. T. Mitchell officiating assisted by Rev. Burrell of Sylvania. Text Genesis 47th P 8 and 9th verses. The interment was in Glenwood Cem. On an 1864 federal excise tax list, Martin was a butcher, address Columbia. In the 1866 assessment list of Columbia, Martin was assessed for a house for the first time, indicating they resided in a log structure or leased a house before that. On an 1866 federal excise tax list, Martin was a “peddler 2nd class” with an address of Sylvania and a tax due of $10.42. On the 1867 assessment list Martin was assessed for 40 improved acres, 34 unimproved acres, 1 house, 2 horses, 7 cows. In 1868 assessed for 1 horse and 1 cow, having disposed of real estate in Nov 1866 and Aug 1867. Martin again appears in the Wells assessment of 1869 and 1870 with one cow. Martin was enumerated in Wells in 1870, residing with brother David, farm laborer. Martin does not appear in Wells assessment lists after 1870. Mary signed both the Nov 1866 and Aug 1867 deeds, but is not found in the 1870 census enumeration. Some of their children are found in various households in Bradford and Tioga Counties. She was the widow of Bascom Taylor and died of pneumonia at her home last Thursday night, Feb. 25, 1892. Her death was quiet and peaceful - she passed away as one falling asleep, without a struggle or murmur. Mrs. Lydia Shakelton Taylor was born Nov. 6th, 1818, at Knowlton, Sussex county, NJ. She was the daughter of James Fries, a ruling elder in the Presbyterian church, who moved to Troy, PA, sometime previous to 1843, in which year she was wedded to Bascom Taylor, of this place, who died in 1872. Mrs. Taylor was a consistent member of the Presbyterian church since a child and her husband was a ruling elder in the Second Presbyterian church at this place. She was a woman of noted thrifty and industrious habits, a most excellent and loving wife and mother, and greatly respected. Five sons survive and mourn their loss, viz: Samuel F., of Gravity, IA; J. V., of this place; Rev. J. B., of Walnut, IA; Frank F., of Gravity, IA; and Alton, youngest son, who resided with her. The funeral was held on Monday, Feb. 29th, at 2 o'clock p.m. Services were held in the old Presbyterian church, Rev. S. F. Colt preaching a touching and eloquent sermon. The remains were interred in the cemetery adjoining, beside those of her husband. The funeral was very largely attended. The pall-bearers were six nephews of Mrs. Taylor, viz: Mr. Fries of Columbia Cross Roads, Gordon Taylor of Towanda, Geo. Taylor of Laceyville, John Taylor of Spring Hill, H. B. Gaylord and J. R. Taylor of Wyalusing. When Rev. S. F. Colt was a young minister and preached here nearly fifty years ago, he met Mrs. Taylor as a bride and helped welcome her to her new home; and after the flight of so many years, with the burden of their sorrows and the light of their joy, he spoke the last sad farewell over her inanimate form (obituary). 20. Ralph Taylor Dies Suddenly – The entire community was shocked by the death Monday about 5:30 AM of Ralph Taylor, 67, of 34 Sherwood St. Mr. Taylor had been taken to the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital, Wellsboro, in the Mansfield Ambulance about 10:30 PM the previous evening, suffering from a heart attack. Mr. Taylor was president of the First National Bank in Mansfield. A native of Wyalusing, Mr. Taylor was graduated from the Wyalusing High School and began his banking career in the former Mechanics National Bank in Sayre. Following his service in World War I, he returned to Sayre and soon thereafter was offered a position with the First National Bank at East Smithfield. He was made a cashier of that bank when only 20 years old. Mr. Taylor was married to the former Marie Carman of Sayre on Oct. 20, 1921. He came to Mansfield as cashier in the First National Bank in August 1933, and served from that time as a civic and community leader. During World War II Mr. Taylor was chairman of three successful bond drives. He was a member of the nominating committee for the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia and a past chairman of the Tioga-Potter Bankers Association. He was chairman and director of the Mansfield Community Chest for more than 20 years. Mr. Taylor was a past president of the Corey Creek Golf Club and for many years was a member of the Mansfield Presbyterian Church and past president of the Board of Trustees. He also was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Mansfield Salvation Army Unit. The banker was instrumental in the building of the Mansfield bank from a half-million-dollar business in 1933, to an institution with resources of more than $5 million today (1962). Mr. Taylor was made executive vice president of the bank in January of 1954 and supervised the renovation and modernization of the bank. Mr. Taylor was named president of the bank in January 1961. Mr. Taylor was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Zebulun Chapter, Royal Arch Masons and of the Williamsport Consistory. Mr. Taylor was also a member of Austin-Cox Post, American Legion of Mansfield (Mansfield Advertiser, Mansfield, Pennsylvania, May 16,1962). Ralph Taylor, 67, of Mansfield, died Monday, May 14, 1962. He was president and director of the First National Bank of Mansfield for 29 years and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mansfield. Survived by wife, Mrs. Marie Carman Taylor; son, John C. of Waterloo; daughters, Miss Jane Taylor of Endwell and Miss Ann Taylor at home; 2 grandchildren; brother, Robert A. Taylor of Emporium, PA. Body at Shaw & Robena Funeral Home with calling hours on Wednesday after 4 PM. Funeral service in the First Presbyterian Church of Mansfield Thursday at 2 PM, the Rev. William McElwain officiating.
