It was probated before the Hunterdon County Surrogate's Court on June 12, 1855. Jonathan Robins, a son, was named as sole executor of his estate. Children named in the will are identified as follows: son, Isaac Robins; son, Daniel I. Robins; daughter, Mary Robins; daughter, Amelia Fisher, wife of William F. Fisher; son, John W. Robins; Emmeline Winters, wife of Lewis C. Winters; and Elizabeth Petty, wife of Charles Petty. From THE HUNTERDON GAZETTE 1845 - 1856 CD, Jonathan Robins, Executor of the estate of Daniel Robins, offered a private sale of 1) a farm containing 140 acres near the village of Bloomsbury in the Township of Bethlehem, and 2) a timber lot containing 20 acres lying near the public road leading from Bloomsbury to Little York. The article further states "Persons wishing to view the above described property can be shown the same by calling on CHARLES PETTY or ISAAC ROBINS, living on said farm. Indenture (Vol. 113, p. 557-559 Hunterdon County) April 1, 1856 from Jonathan Robins, executing the last will and testament of Daniel Robins, to Richard Petty conveys 150.47 acres on the south side of the road from the Old Hickory Tavern to Bloomsbury with adjoing land owners mentioned as Charles Petty, James Train, Vliet, Kendy, Smith, Taylor, and Hagunaus. Isaac Robbins (1830 - 1896) is my 2nd great-father. His Certificate of Death identifies his parents as Daniel and Jane Robins, as well as baptism records. From the Records of the Genealogical Society of New Jersey, transcribed by Bruce D. Sinclair, Daniel Robins and his wife, Jane, d. September 15, 1844, aged 52.8.8 are in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Alexandria Township, Hunterdon County. Daniel's gravestone reads "our father, d. June 2, 1855, aged 68 years, 9 months and 11 days. I have a photograph of his gravestone. Daniel's age is suspect. It appears in the 1850 census that his age is either 53 or 58. In the 1840 census in Bethlehem Township, Daniel Robbins is Head of Household with one male between 40 & 50. And in 1830, Daniel Robins is in Alexandria Township with one male 15 - 20 and one 40 - 50. Of note, in the 1850 census, Daniel Robbins is Family Number 213 and nearby at 206 is Jonathan Robbins, age 56, and family - Charity, 54, and children: Jonas, Sarah, Sylvester and Elizabeth and James Sedes and Daniel Case. Hope some of this helps. With the DNA results, I feel that I now have narrowed my focus on the possible parents of Daniel. This census is odd for another reason. The names in a census were normally arranged by household and year of birth. However if an older child had a family of their own, then they were moved to the bottom of the list below their younger siblings. Sorting was again by age. Thus my interpretation of the following census would be Damiel through John W were members of the family of Damiel Robins and these children were all unmarried. If Mary were a daughter of Damiel she would either be listed between Isaac and Daniel, or moved to he current position if she had either a husband or child. She has no child and since her name is Robbins I would guess that she is married to a son of Damiel that is not present for the census. The same rational applies to Emmeline Robbins - She should also be a daughter-in-law to Damiel Robbins, Married to a son that is not present. However Emma's placement in the list indicates that Emeline is her mother. Source - From the Records of the Genealogical Society of New Jersey, Transcribed by Bruce D. Sinclair. http://www.rootsweb.com/~njhunterCemeteries/MtPleasantCemetery.htm. I have not been able to obtain a death record for Daniel or Ralph Robins. The 1848-1867 Statewide Death Index was searched. Also, the death return sheets for Bethleham and Alexandria Townships for years 1 June 1855 to 1 June 1856. It appears as though the reporting was not complete for this period for Bethlehem Township. The previous year had 30 deaths and the year 1 June 1855 through 1 June 1856 only had 3 deaths. According to the Archives staff, about 40% of the early records were not reported to the state. Based on his will and deeds, I know Daniel lived and owned property in the area near the Old Hickory Tavern in Bethlehem Township. I have not been able to prove who his parents were. My direct line all lived in Hunterdon County until my grandfather died in 1957. I hope this helps and any clues as to the identity of Daniel's parents would be most appreciated. Isaac died on March 10, 1896 at his residence in Holland Township, Hunterdon County. He was 66 years of age according to the certificate. Actually, I did not know about the marriage of Daniel to Mary Myers in Sussex County. I did not know Jane's maiden name. Elizabeth Robins was born about 1813. In Daniel's will, Elizabeth Robins was referred to as a daughter, Elizabeth Petty, wife of Charles Petty. Elizabeth Petty and her sister, Mary Robins Porter, are buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery - Section 1, Plot 81. The other siblings appear to be younger than Elizabeth, except for perhaps Amelia and I do not know her age. Jonathan was the oldest son. So, a marriage date of 1810 would seem to fit And "Mary Jane" is a possibility. It seemed to me that there was a connection between Daniel and Ralph and this is why I tried to obtain a death record for Ralph. Daniel and Jane named their first daughter Mary. Might Daniel's wife have been Mary Jane and she went by Jane? Daniel and Jane's birth dates of 1786 and 1792 line up with the 1810 marriage date of Daniel and Mary. This is a possible explanation to this unknown. Also, Daniel's parents are not as yet known. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Robbinsfamilysouthjersey@yahoogroups.com on behalf of Gary Robins [gdrobins@robinsgenealogy.net] Sent: Friday, October 05, 2007 2:05 PM To: Robbinsfamilysouthjersey@yahoogroups.com Subject: [SPAM] Re: [Robbinsfamilysouthjersey] Robbins DNA Project Charles: After closely reading some of your posts and searching census records I wonder if this might be your family, though the age of the head of house appears to be incorrect. 1850 Census, Bethlehem Township, Hunterdon County, NJ Damiel (Probably Daniel) Robbins Age 5?, Occupation Farmer, Born in NJ Isaac Robbins, Age 22, Occupation Farmer Born in NJ Daniel J. Charles END various Robins-Johnson messages ... Date: Sat, 11 Dec 2021 08:10:02 -0600 From: Tracey Marcelo Hi,I can add a little bit about Rachel Johnson and the other children... Rachel Johnson (wife of Jonathan Robbins Jr) was born about 1760 and died about 1849. She was the daughter of Ralph Johnson of Alexandria, Hunterdon Co. One of her brothers was Jonathan Johnson (who was the admin of the estate of Jonathan Robbins Jr in 1796.) As Garry mentioned, one of Jonathan Robbins and Rachel Johnson's children was Ralph Johnson b. 1779. The others are: Daniel b. 1782 d. 1855 Bethelhem, Hunterdon Co. Wife: Jane John b. 1784 d. 1866 Milford, Hunterdon Co. His wife was Abigail Cooley. John and his family are buried in Milford Christian Churchyard. (I've attached some images; let me know if they come through okay.) 1. This newspaper advertisement from the Trenton Federalist in 1803 shows that 23 farms on "Hamilton's Tract" formerly "Bierly's Tract" were being rented by 25 or so different people. According to the History of Hunterdon and Somerset Cos, this tract was in the area of Alexandria township, Hunterdon Co. (See:https://www.google.com/books/edition/History_of_Hunterdon_and_Somerset_Counti/AdMwAQAAMAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=%22Hamilto> pg=PA416&printsec=frontcover ) There were 24 different people living on the 23 farms being sold, including: Ralph Johnson Jonathan Johnson John Kitchen William Mettler James Kitchen Rachel Robbins (Because Rachel is on this list instead of a husband, it indicates she was a single woman in 1803. It doesn't say she is a widow but it would be unusual for a young woman to rent property without being widowed.) What Robbins men were born around 1750-1760, died before 1803, and lived in Alexandria twp? Jonathan Robbins Jr fits this description. Do any other Robbins men? If so, let's identify them so we can prove or disprove them! Johnsons_RachelRobbins_in_Trenton_Federalist_1803-12-05_[1].jpg 2. The admin of Jonathan Robbins Jr of Alexandria twp in 1796 was Jonathan Johnson with bondsmen John Cooley and Henry Mettler. The inventory takers were John Cooley and William Mettler. image.png 3. Rachel Robins died in Hunterdon County NJ before 1850; however, there is an admin record for her in Montour County, Pennsylvania (previously Columbia County). Many Hunterdon Co families moved to Columbia Co PA (parts of which became Montour Co PA in 1850) including: -- Henry Kitchen and Jane Robbins -- Jane Kitchen (daughter of Henry Kitchen and Jane Robbins) and husband Robert Johnson (also went by Johnston) and their children -- William Kitchen b. 1789 (grandson of Henry Kitchen and Jane Robbins through their son William) -- John Kitchen (son of Henry Kitchen and Jane Robbins) The admin on the Montour Co record was Ralph Robins (who was still living in Hunterdon Co). The Securities were Richard Demott and William Kitchen--both of whom lived in Montour Co. PA. This William Kitchen is the grandson of Henry Kitchen and Jane Robbins. Richard Demott was the executor of the will of John Kitchen (son of Henry Kitchen and Jane Robbins who died in Columbia Co. PA in 1837. John Kitchen's will contains bequeaths to many Johnsons, including a Wesley of Hunterdon whose relationship I haven't figured out. Crop_RachelRobinsOfHunterdonEstateMontour1851.jpg I also have not figured out WHY this record for Rachel was necessary in Montour Co. I thought perhaps she owned property in Montour or Columbia but did not find any in the deed records of those counties. So perhaps she inherited some from someone?? But I never found Ralph or William Kitchen or Richard Demott selling property on behalf of her or her estate. 4. Ralph Robins was "of Alexandria twp" in several records: -- From More Records of Old Hunterdon County, Vol. II by Phyllis B DeAutrechy Bastardy Cases 1761-1890: On 16 Jul 1802, John Kitchen of Alexandria Twp was surety for Ralph Robins of the same place, who was accused of being the father of the unborn child of Phebe Riley, single woman. -- Between 1816 & 1818 Ralph Robins had Alexandria deeds where he sold or bought land. Book 27 page 48; Book 28, pages 157, 309, 504, 505, 506, 587 ,605; Book 29 pages 241, 244. -- Ralph Robbins was born 18 Jul 1779 Hunterdon Co., NJ, died 5 Mar 1859 Hunterdon Co., NJ buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery also called Alexandria Presbyterian Churchyard on Route 519, Milford, NJ opposite First Presbyterian Church of Mount Pleasant. Ralph Robins married Susan Vanderbelt born 1782, died 13 Sept. 1860 Hunterdon Co., NJ daughter of Jacob Vanderbelt. Susan Vanderbelt Robins is also buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Daniel Robins 1786-1855 & his wife Jane 1792-1844 are buried there too. I think this Daniel is a brother of Ralph. (A few of these notes about Ralph came from Garry back in 2018.) from "More Records of Old Hunterdon County, Volume II" by Phyllis B D'Autrechy in 2000 Bastardy Cases 1761-1890 On 16 Jul 1802 John Kitchen of Alexandria Twp was surety for Ralph Robins of the same place, who was accused of being the father of the unborn child of Phebe Riley, single woman.
