From "Marfy Goodspeed" : BEGIN A deed from William Smith and wife dated Nov. 30, 1804 conveys the property to Elisha Rittenhouse and gives this interesting prelude, which the writer has partly punctuated for the sake of clarity, meaning to leave it otherwise unchanged: "Whereas John Robins, late of the township of Amwell aforesaid in his lifetime and at the time of his death, was Lawfully and Rightfully seized in Fee of Certain Lands Situate in the Township of Amwell aforesaid; and Whereas the said John Robins Departed this Life Interest leaving Children and Heirs at Law (Viz.) John Robins, Elizabeth Dunham, wife of Barzillah Dunham, Joseph Robins, Amos Robins, Job Robins, Jonathan Robins, Ann, wife of Samuel Vanormen, Jane, wife of Amos Sutton, Mary, wife of William Smith, and Elizabeth, wife of Nathan Sutton, some of whom were under the age of twenty-one years and praying for division of the farm whereon the said John Robins Lived and Died & Whereas by decree of the Orphan's Court" ... "Did set off until the said William Smith and Mary his wife (one of the daughters of the said John Robins) and party to this Agreement" &c. Somebody erred; the name "Elizabeth" occurs twice in the record of daughters. I just checked my database, and I have John Robins (married 1778 to Catharine, possibly the widow of Daniel Pegg), died 1802, son of John Robins (c.1694-1777) and unknown; grandson of Daniel Robins (1666-1763). END From Hunterdon Historical Newsletter, Vol 49, Nos 2 & 3, Spring/Fall 2013 BEGIN Boarshead Tavern in the 18th century By Marfy Goodspeed [excepted] The Boarshead Road In 1766, the year that Philip Bevin Sr. died, the Boarshead Road was officially laid out, probably following an already well-worn path. It ran due west from Route 579, where the tavern was, until it came to the Wickecheoke Creek where it turned north until it hit the road running to "Baptist-Town." Here is the description of the route the road was to take: "Beginning at a Stump standing in the aforesaid Road Leading from Kingwood through the great Swamp to Trenton, being a corner of Philip Bevins Land thence West between the said Bevins former Lott and a Lott of Land purchased of John Hawking and Land of Houted Rissley {Hanteel Risler} and John Robins" . . . etc. 6 ... But by 1771, Daniel Pegg had married a second wife, Catharine (maiden name not known). ... On September 10, 1771, Daniel Pegg and wife Catharine of Amwell mortgaged four lots totaling 83 acres to Samuel Tucker Esq. of Trenton. 7 The first lot of 42 acres bordered the great road, land of Abraham Bonnell (now Daniel Pegg's), Joseph Thatcher, and Philip Bevin. I don't think Pegg bought the lot from Samuel Tucker; Tucker was basically a financier and investor. What is crucial is that matching the lot as drawn from the metes & bounds given in the mortgage with the tax map indicates that Daniel Pegg's property was north of the tavern lot, and Philip Bevin was in possession of it. Shortly after this, Daniel Pegg's wife Catharine left him, apparently for another man. That man was John Robins, of the Buchanan's Tavern area, who also owned land on Boarshead Road. ... On May 15, 1778, Pegg's former wife Catharine married John Robins. 10 Then, about September 1778, Daniel Pegg died intestate. 6. Hunterdon Co. Road Book 1 p. 40. 7. H.C. Mortgage 1-157. Neither Daniel Pegg nor Phillip Bevin were listed in "Colonial Conveyances," the index to New Jersey's earliest deeds. 10. I discussed Catharine Pegg Robins in Two Taverns at Robins Hill. She and Amos Sutton married in 1785 and had 10 children, including Delilah Sutton, born about 1790. E. H. L. is probably Elisha H. Large (1823-1853), the son of Jacob Large (1790-1854) and Sarah Sutton (1789-1863). Sarah Sutton was the daughter of Amos Sutton and Jane Robins. She married Jacob Large in 1813, and they had 9 children. She and Jacob must have had a falling out because in 1850, Jacob was counted by himself, living in the household of Rev. Israel Poulson, but Sarah is nowhere to be found (not with her children and not with her siblings). In 1860, she was living with her youngest son William, a master carpenter of Lambertville, who married Abigail Holcombe Case about 1856. She died there in 1863, but I do not know where she was buried. Amos Robins was the son of John Robins and Elizabeth Taylor, and brother to Jane Robins who married Amos Sutton. He lived on the other Robins farm, the one along the Boarshead Road, and for a time ran the Boarshead Inn/Hotel on Route 579. He married Ruth Barnes (1758-1823) on October 26, 1777; they had at least two children, Job, born about 1785, and Sarah, who married a cousin, Joseph Robbins. The wife of Amos Robins was Ruth Barnes, daughter of William Barnes (c.1725-c.1785) and Hannah Kitchen (c.1727-?). William and Hannah Barnes owned a farm on Route 579 not too far north of the intersection with Route 523.
