He was reprimanded but "refused to make satisfaction." END Posted by: "Sara Hoffman" july37@cox.net turkeypt2 Date: Sat Dec 9, 2017 10:17 am ((PST)) BEGIN It seems logical to me that Joseph Robins free black man was connected in some way to the John Robins (1758-1828) family of Middletown. John Robins is thought to be the son of Zebulon Robins & the grandson of Joseph & Sarah Leah Clayton Robins. Zebulon Robins was an interesting character from what is found in the Society of Friends records. He was dismissed from the Society of Friends in 1775 for fornication with an unnamed woman, marrying two times contrary to rules, striking a man, unbecoming language & not attending religious meetings. He also served in the militia. I don't know if the salt works was located in PA or NJ. If it was in PA, it would be a significant clue. Maybe you or another member has the answer to the location. It is believed Zebulon lived in Monmouth Co. his entire life but we can't be certain he didn't relocate temporarily. He was living in Monmouth Co. in 1775 from records of the Chesterfield Monthly Meeting when he refused to comply with the ordinances of the Society of Friends & was disowned. In 1796, he was one of the two surviving trustees of Ye Olde Robbins Burial Ground. The Elijah Robins Bible Record says he died May 25, 1816. It appears he died in Monmouth Co., but I don't know for sure. I don't see his name on the cemetery records of Ye Old Robbins Burial Ground where it seems most likely he would have been laid to rest. Are there any records of his death & burial place? Roster of the People of Revolutionary Monmouth Co., NJ by Michael S. Adelberg is the source for the occupation of Zebulon Robins.
