He was placing a tongue in a wood sled, when he accidently stumbled and fell, the back of his head striking a plank just where a sharp wooden peg protruded, causing instant death. END From "Northwestern New Jersey" published in 1927 by the Lewis Historical Publishing Company: BEGIN Alfred C. Snook - As the successful owner and operator of a big farm and as a skilled veterinary surgeon, Alfred C. Snook was well known in Sussex County, where his death, which occurred August 20, 1920, closed a long and active life of useful activity, and removed from this section of the county a citizen and a valued friend whose loss will long be felt. Mr. Snook was a member of a family which has been prominent in the development of Sussex County. His great-grandfather, who spelled the name after the fashion of his native Germany, "Snooks," was one of the pioneers of the county, who settled on a farm here and raised a family. Among his children was William, who was engaged in farming in what is now Hampton Township, where he reared the following children: 1. Isaac C., of whom further. 2. Mary. 3. Jane. 4. David. 5. Jacob. 6. Elmira. 7. Alfred. Isaac C. Snook, son of William Snook, was engaged in farming in Greene Township throughout practically all of his active career. In addition to his farming activities he also was from an early age interested in horses, and he became a skilled veterinary doctor, whose services were much in demand. He was always ready to leave his farm work or to give up his night's rest if an ailing animal needed his attention, and he made for himself an enviable reputation in this line. He was one of the well-known men of his day in Sussex County, and was held in high esteem among his associates. His death occurred on his farm, September 25, 1885. He married Irene Roy, who survived him and died August 30, 1892. They were the parents of thirteen children: 1. Mary C. 2. Sarah A. 3. Alfred C., of whom further. 4. William A. 5. Alice L. 6. John R. 7. David I. 8. Esther A. 9. Jacob L. 10. George A. 11. Isaac M. R. 12. Martha J. 13. Emma C. Alfred C. Snook, son of Isaac C. and Irene (Roy) Snook, was born in Greene (now Fredon) Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, October 3, 1846, and received a good practical education in the local public schools. He was reared on his father's farm, and, like his father, became interested in the diseases of horses. He, too, became a well-known veterinary surgeon, and to his skill and prompt action many an animal in Sussex County owed its continued existence. The homestead farm consisted of about 192 acres, and to this big tract he gave careful attention. In addition to his activities as a farmer and a veterinary doctor he was active in local public affairs, and was elected to fill several township offices, the duties of which he discharged with efficiency, giving entire satisfaction to his associates and to those who elected him. His religious affiliation was with the Presbyterian Church of Newton. Politically, he gave his support to the principles and the candidates of the Republican party, and he was a generous supporter of all movements for the betterment of the civic, social, economic, and moral development of the section of the county in which he lived. His death occurred August 20, 1920. A life of usefulness, simply lived, and quietly ended was his, but the impress of his influence upon the community in which he lived was strong, and the friends who mourn his passing are many. Alfred C. Snook was married, December 29, 1896, to Celia M. Kishpaugh, daughter of Martin and Martha A. (Weldrick) Kishpaugh. Mr. and Mrs. Snook became the parents of four children: 1. Lottie, who for the past six years has been engaged in teaching in Linden, New Jersey. 2. Elsie, who married Milton Laurence, and she is employed in the office of Harvey Snook, county engineer for Sussex County. 3. Alfred M., who resides at home. 4. Mildred C., who is a stenographer employed at the Newton Trust Company. Since the death of her husband Mrs. Snook manages the homestead farm, which she owns.
