It appears that they are both wearing dresses. Dear Marshall, Now this is something I know about: it really is Edward Evans Lake and the little one is his sister Lorlyn. Apparently, much to my Grandfather's chagrin, it was not uncommon for a boy (particularly if his Mother was trying to emulate the upper classes) to have long tresses and wear frilly dresses on special occasions. He seemed to overcome this embarrassment with no lasting ill effects. He was a wonderful man, as my sister has probably told you. From what my Grandmother (his wife) told me, his Father, Evans Godown, was a very easy-going man, as was Granddad, and he used to come over to their house to put his feet by the coal stove to warm them, as Lena (e.godown's wife) was not one to keep the embers hot so to speak--she was close with money unless she thought it was important. She definitely ran the household. Granddad (Edward Evans) had a beautiful singing voice and the minister of the local church tried to recruit him to join the choir but he never did. He was also very particular about grooming: always clean-shaven, hair cut, nails trimmed and clean. He loved fine things but wasn't materialistic. He loved birds and had many bird houses--always made sure he had plenty of bird seed, etc., especially in the Winter. He loved coin and stamp collecting and enjoyed reading history books. He was very gentle, kind and fair. My Mother and her two sisters (his only children) adored him and said that even when he had to reprimand them (he never hit them) he'd end up taking them to the ice cream store. He probably shouldn't have but that was his nature! He loved odd food and almost any kind of alcohol and I never met anyone who didn't love him.
