Powell, 67, former Sandusky resident and retired merchant of Hartford City, Ind., died Sunday afternoon in Good Samaritan Hospital. Mr. Powell, who formerly was employed here and had many local friends, had been here attending his brother's funeral last Wednesday. His widow, Mrs. Collie[sic] Hess Powell; two brothers, C. F.[sic] Powell, Elyria, and Harvey Powell, Sandusky, and three sisters, Mrs. J. C. Lucas, Findlay, Mrs. Henry Hartung, Sandusky, and Miss Mabel Powell, Bellevue, are among the survivors. Short services were conducted by the Rev. G. S. Gratz at the Lutz Funeral Home this morning. Powell, 67, widely known retired business man and former city councilman, died at 2:20 p.m., Sunday in a Sandusky, O., hospital after a brief illness. He was stricken ill Friday as he and his wife, the former Callie Hess, started their return trip to Hartford City after attending funeral services in Sandusky, Wednesday, for a younger brother, Clyde Powell. Relatives in Hartford City were immediately notified of his illness. While the relatives, Monday, had not yet learned all the details of his death, it was believed to have been caused by a blood clot. One of a family of 10[sic] children---six[sic] boys and four[sic] girls---he came to Hartford City when a young man from Findlay, O., and for a number of years was employed at the American Window Glass plant. After its abandonment, he became engaged in the grocery business, operating a neighborhood store on west Commercial street. Two years ago he retired from active business as he sold the store to Roll Waters. The decedent was a member of the Elks lodge and the Scottish Rite. - His church affiliation was the Grace Methodist church where he served as custodian of all legal papers. The body of the decedent was removed to the Lutz funeral home in Sandusky, and was to be returned to the Baxter and Markin funeral home, here, late Monday afternoon. Funeral services were to be arranged after the return of his widow to this city.
