BEGIN Maude Brokaw Birth: Sep. 16, 1871 Richwood Union County Ohio, USA Death: Apr. 24, 1951 Findlay Hancock County Ohio, USA Dr. Maud Brokaw Called By Death Dr. Maud Brokaw died shortly after 8 o'clock Tuesday morning at her home, 200 Second Street. She had been in ill heath for an extended period and her condition had been critical for the last several months. Her death follows that of her brother, Dr. E.B. Brokaw, prominent Findlay civic leader for many years by six weeks. He passed away March 14 after an illness of several years. Dr. Maud Brokaw was an osteopathic physician and had practiced in Detroit for an extended period. She came to Findlay in 1941 to reside with her brother, following the sudden death of his wife, who passed away while they were on a trip to Florida. At that time, she retired from active practice. She was a native of Richmond, Ohio. Upon completion of her schooling there, she went to Iowa , where she attended osteopathic college. Upon receiving her degree, she went to Detroit, to engage in the practice of osteopathy. While in Detroit, she was active in Women's club and civic affairs and belonged to the Zonta club for many years. She was a charter member of the Women's City club of Detroit. During her residence in Findlay, she became a member of the Coterie club. She is survived by one brother, Ernest Brokaw of Grove City, Ohio, and three nephews, all of Cleveland. The body was taken to the Barnhart Memorial. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 o'clock Thursday morning at the Barnhart Memorial. The Rev Donald W. Cryer, pastor of the First Methodist church, will officiate. Interment will be in Maple Grove cemetery. Brokaw, president of Hancock Savings and Loan Company and Findlay civic leader died at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning at his home, 200 Second street. Dr. Brokaw was an active figure in all civic affairs of the community for a long period of years. He was identified with many community organizations in leadership capacities through the years and he contributed much time and effort in the interest of civic progress locally. He served as president of the Hancock county chapter of the American Red Cross for four years, retiring several years ago. He was later elected an honorary vice president of the organization in recognition of his long and invaluable service to the Red Cross. He served as roll call and fund chairman before becoming chapter head. Dr. Brokaw was a charter member of the Findlay Rotary club when it was organized in 1920. He served as the second president of the organization and was an active committee leader during the 31 years the club has been in existence here. He served two terms on the club board of directors. He was secretary of the board of directors of the Findlay Y.M.C.A for some years. He served as a member of the board for some 18 years and was a member of the building committee which had charge of the construction of the new building in 1939. He later was a member of the finance and house committees. Dr. Brokaw was an active leader in the First Methodist church. At the time he became ill, he was chairman of a committee in charge of an extensive repair and improvement program covering a four-year period at the church. He had served as head of many other church groups and as a member of the board of trustees. At the time of his death, he was a member of the board of conference claimants of the church. He was chairman of the board which was named by the common pleas court in the twenties to construct the new Hancock county children's home on North Main street, following adoption by the voters of a bond issue for this purpose. During World War II, he served as a member of the advisory board of the selective service system in Hancock county. He also was active in other phases of the war effort in both world wars, locally. For some years after the organization of the boy scout movement here, he was a member of the council and served on various scouting committees, including the executive committee. Dr. Brokaw served as a member of the board of the Hancock county Farmers' club. He was a member of the Findlay County Club and belonged to the Chamber of Commerce. Coming to Findlay in the late nineties from Bellefontaine, Ohio, Dr. Brokaw, who was a graduate of the Indiana state dental college, practiced his profession of dentistry for a number of years here, later retiring from active practice to become identified with various interests, locally. For a number of years, he was a partner in the Morescot clothing store here and in 1915, he and R.K. Davis became associated in the opening and development of the South Park addition. Dr Brokaw was a native of Richwood, Ohio. His parents were William and Viola (Fisher) Brokaw. He spent early years of his life in Oil City, Pa., and in Minnesota and then went to Indianapolis to attend dental college. He began the practice of Dentistry in 1897 in Bellefontaine and two years later came to Findlay. He was married to Miss Alice M. Wagner, August 10, 1911. She passed away suddenly on a trip to Florida in 1941. A sister, Dr. Maud Brokaw, of Findlay survives as well as a brother, Ernest Brokaw of Grove City, Ohio. Dr. Brokaw was a member of all the local Masonic bodies. He also was a 32nd degree Mason. BROKAW EXPIRES IN FLORIDA Mrs. Brokaw, wife of the president of the Hancock Savings & Loan company, died of a heart attack late Friday night in Florida, according to word received here Saturday. Mrs. Brokaw, her husband and her sister-in-law, Dr. Maude Brokaw, of Detroit, left Findlay two weeks ago for a winter vacation in Florida. They left Sarasota, Fla., Friday for Miami and Mrs. Brokaw died at Homestead, a short distance from Miami. It was not known whether she was stricken while they were traveling or after they stopped for the night. The party had expected to spend three or four weeks in Florida. Mrs. Brokaw apparently had been in usual health when she left here and since then as far as friends and relatives here knew Sunday evening. She was born in Liberty township west of the Liberty school and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob B. Wagner. She came to Findlay with her parents when she was 12 years old and resided for a number of years at 915 South Main street. Her maiden name was Alice Wagner. Beside her husband, Mrs. Brokaw is survived by a brother, Sherman R. Wagner, who lives on the home place in Liberty township, and two sisters, Mrs. W.E. Stephenson, 1024 South Main street and Mrs. David Lotz of Los Angeles, California Mrs. Brokaw was a member of the First Methodist church and was active in church and club work. She belonged to the Women's Society of Christian Service of the church, the William Shakespeare and Coterie clubs, and Federation of Women's clubs. She was a graduate of Findlay College and also had studied in New York City. Her husband, Dr. Brokaw and his sister, Miss Maude Brokaw, of Detroit, accompanied the body back to Findlay. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.
