Barbara F. Kishpaugh, 79, an indefatigable volunteer for her church, Habitat for Humanity, Guardianship Services and countless other organizations, died on Friday. In June, Kishpaugh fell ill with a cold that developed into pneumonia and heart problems. She died early Friday at Northeast Baptist Hospital. Until this summer, Kishpaugh had been actively involved in volunteer work, from the Texas Open Golf Tournament, where the avid golfer worked as a marshal for 20 years, to the SAMM Shelter. The retired Army nurse was a deacon of First Presbyterian Church and served on many boards. For years, Kishpaugh helped the elderly as a member of Guardianship Services. Until its demise a few years ago, the agency provided guardians for the elderly or incapacitated who could not pay for their care. "It's not that difficult," Kishpaugh said in a 1998 interview. "As an Army nurse, I've cared for people all my life. My mother raised us to give back to society." Kishpaugh, said Bexar County Probate Court Judge Polly Jackson Spencer, made an ideal volunteer. "Because she was retired, she had time to spend doing volunteer work, she knew what to do and how to do it and she was very tenacious," Spencer said. In the mid-1990s, Kishpaugh worked on several houses built by Habitat for Humanity and was the construction supervisor for Woman's House III. "Some of it is hard work," she said. "The toughest physical labor is doing the roofing. It's time-consuming, and it's crucial that it be done correctly." She was honored for her work by the state of Kentucky and by the San Antonio Young Lawyers Association. Born in Washington, D.C., on June 25, 1923, she grew up in Connecticut. When her father died, the family moved to Battle Creek, Mich., where she finished high school. After graduating from Michael Reese Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago in 1944, she went into the Army. She served in Korea and Vietnam, where she was a chief nurse. She was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and Army Commendation medal. Kishpaugh retired from the Army and settled in San Antonio in 1975. "I once asked Barbara when she was going to get a job," said her sister, Frances Henning of New Braunfels. "She said, 'I don't need the money and I expect to spend the rest of my life helping other people.' "That is what she did and she never talked about it to anyone." Graveside services are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 404 N.
