One of the prettiest weddings of the season occurred at St. Bonaventures church at Auburn Center, on April 24, 1912, when Winifred Loretta, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Thayne, was united in marriage to Edward J. Burke of Meshoppen, by their pastor, Rev. M. J. Kelly. Miss Frances Thayne, cousin of the bride, was bridesmaid, while Thos. Burke, brother of the groom acted as best man. The bride was beautifully gowned in white silk and wore a white willow plumed hat and carried white and pink carnations and a gold rosary while Miss Thayne was gowned in white embroidery veil and wore a black plumed hat. The groom wore the conventional black. After the ceremony the bridal party repaired to the home of the bride where a sumptuous repast was served to the friends of the contracting parties. Mr. and Mrs. Burke received many beautiful and costly presents, including silver, cut glass, linen and furniture, also $125 in money which shows the high esteem they are held in by all, who wished them a long, happy and prosperous life. They will go to housekeeping at once, near Meshoppen where the groom is a successful farmer. END transcription of Newspapers->Deaths->5.28-4.jpg Probably from a newspaper local to Meshoppen Township, Pennsylvania in March of 1933: BEGIN Mrs. Jane Burke Mrs. Jane Burke, an aged and highly esteemed resident of Wells street, Meshoppen, passed away at her home at 3:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 23, 1933 after a lingering illness of several months. Mrs. Burke whose maiden name was Jane Fary was born in Tyrone Country, Ireland, 83 years ago last August and came to this country when a young woman. In 1882, she was married to Thomas Burke who died 38 years ago last January. She resided many years in Auburn township, later moving to Briar Ridge where she remained until about 12 years ago at which time she moved to Meshoppen. Mrs. Burke was a devout member of St. Joachim's Church, which she attended regularly until she was forced by ill health to remain at home. The funeral which was largely attended by numerous friends and relatives was held from the home of her son, Edward J. Burke at Briar Ridge. Rev. J. J. Reilly was celebrant of a requiem mass at 10 a. m. Saturday in St. Joachim's Church. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery at Auburn Place by the side of her husband and daughter. The bearers were James Cavanaugh, Jay Smith, Ben Carney, Dennis Sherdian [sic], William Thayne and John H. Thayne. Besides a host of friends Mrs. Burke leaves to mourn her passing three sons, Edward J. of Briar Ridge, Thomas J. of Clark Summit and Andrew F. of Ossining, N. Y., also twelve granchildren, her only daughter Katherine Burke Harrigan having died 22 years ago. He was a member of St. Joachim's Church and its Holy Name Society. Surviving are his wife, the former Winifred L. Jane Johanna Fary/Ferry came to America in the fall of 1880 from County Tyrone. The address of her relatives there was-Tyrone County, Duntague, Ireland, by way of Tullymuck, this is near Omagh. Jane had relatives in America, the Crowns, one who married Wesley Heller, the father of Arthur, Anna, Gertrude, Paul and Grace. She was also a relative of the McCrossens, all of whom are now deceased. (Edward and his son Vincent). Jane's first residing place was Doolittle Hill. Jane had a sister who remained in Ireland, her name was Mary, and she married a McGee, she had three children, two came to America and died here, Edward and Mame, the third stayed in Ireland, he is also deceased, as far as is known they had no children. Mame died in Philadelphia, Edward in Chicago. The mother of Jane was a twin, her maiden name was O'Brien. Edward was predeceased by his wife, Joan Lake Burke; parents, Ed and Winifred Burke; brother, Ambrose (Virginia) Burke; sisters, Catherine (Ed) Dougherty and Winetta (Paul) McGavin; nephews Joe Dougherty , Danny McGavin and niece Kathleen Dougherty; and his long time friend Joan Bisher. He is survived by his sister Regina Graham; nephews, Jerry (Gail) Burke, Billy (Clara) Burke, Marty McGavin, Tim (Tracie) McGavin; nieces Patty Graham Beirne and Peg (Dave) Hellenga; as well as several great nieces and nephews. Edward was born in Meshoppen, PA. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, dancing, and was proud of his Irish heritage. Ed was an active member of the Church of the Holy Trinity, Binghamton. He was retired from IBM. Edward will be deeply missed by his family and friends. A Funeral Mass will be offered at the Church of the Holy Trinity, 346 Prospect Street, Binghamton, Friday at 12 noon.
