Death by hit-run-car
ends his nightly strolls

  Hugh Henahan, retired labor organizer for the International Association
of Machinists, was 75 and taking his age in stride.
  For the past eight years, he rose early each morning and walked a mile
from his home at 11-A Oxford St., Montclair, to Immacualate Conception Church.
  Twice a week he made a five-mile trek from his home to Immaculate Conception
Cemetery, where his son, Robert, was buried two years ago.
  In the evenings he visited his son, Edward, at his home at 42 Howe Ave.
He always insisted on walking the two mile distance.
  Saturday, the elder Henahan walked to his son's house, helped repair some
electrical wiring, then slipped into an easy chair and watched a ballgame.
Later that evening he put on his coat and hat and started to leave.
  Edward offered to drive his father home.  But Henahan was insistent.
He walked.
  His route took him along Harrison St., down Gates St., across Bloomfield
Ave. to greenwood Ave. and Claremont Ave.  As he stepped off the curb,
a speeding car loomed in front of him.  He was struck and thrown 70 feet.
  The car came to a halt a half block away.  One youth jumped from the
passenger's side, ran back but it was too late.  Henahan was dead.
  The youth and the driver then sped off on Claremont Ave., toward Verona.
  Detectives began searching for the hit and run driver.  Paint scrapings
found on Henahan's clothing were to be analyzed.
  Henahan was born in Locust Gap, N.Y., and had lived in Montclair since 1929.
He retired in 1954 after 12 years with the IAM.
  Surviving are his wife, the former Helen Thayne, two sons, Edward of
Montclair, and Leo of Riverdale; a sister, Mrs. Walter Carson of Pompton
Plains; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
  A Solemn High Requiem Mass will be offered 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate
Conception Church, Montclair.
