D. to } 1891, between E. Harper of South Montrose in the M. L. Lake } county of Susquehanna and State of Pennsylvania & Deed } his wife Hellen B., of the first part, and M. L. Lake of South Montrose County and State aforesaid of the second part: Witnesseth: that the said party of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of five hundred and fifty dollars lawful money of the United States of America well and truly paid by the said party of the second part to the said party of the first part at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have granted bargained sold aliened enfeoffed released conveyed and confirmed and by these presents do grant bargain sell alien enfeoff release convey and confirm unto the said party of the second part his heirs and assigned all that certain piece parcel messuage of land situate and lying and being in the township of Bridgewater County of Susquehanna and state of Pennsylvania, bounded and described as follows: viz: Beginning at a stake in the center of the Elk Lake Road in the village of South Montrose, thence along the center of said road south 74 [degrees] east seven (7) rods, thence along the west line of the John Tewksburry lot south 19 1/2 [degrees], west sixteen (16) rods. Harper north 74 3/4 [degrees] west five & 1/2 (5 1/2) rods to a corner, thence along the same north 14 [degrees] east about 16 rods to the place of beginning, containing ninety eight and 1/2 (98 1/2) square rods of land be the same more or less, together with all and singular the tenements hereditaments and appurtenances to the same belonging or in any-wise appertaining and the reversion and reversions remainder and remainders rents issues and profits thereof and also all the estate right title interest property claim and demand whatsoever of the said party of the first part in law equity or otherwise of in to or out of the said premises and every part & parcel thereof, to have and to hold the said premises with all and singular the appurtenances unto the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns to and for the only proper use and behoof of the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns forever- and the said E. Lake, left on Monday for New York city, where they will enter the Babies' Nurse Training School. END From a newspaper out of Montrose, Pennsylvania in March of 1910: BEGIN South Montrose - M. L. Lake, the stock buyer, has lately sold a hog to Wm. Trostel of Laceyville, a butcher, that weighed 539 lbs. It was sold for 11 cents a pound, making the total price $59.29. Mr. Lake has sold a number of others at the same rate, but they were not as heavy as this huge porker. END From a newspaper out of Montrose, Pennsylvania in December of 1911: BEGIN South Montrose - Mr. and Mrs. B. D. Titman are planning to move to South Montrose and will occupy John Struppler's new house. Mr. Titman intends building a store on the Harper lot, near M. L. Lake's residence, and will handle a complete line of general merchandise and also operate the Lehigh Valley coal business in that place. END from Hilda Margaret Lake (3.163, child i) ... BEGIN Taken from the Montrose Independent, Montrose, Pennsylvania: M. L. Lake Dies Suddenly Last Friday Evening Widely Known Stock Buyer and Businessman Succumbs After Long Illness. Michael L. Lake, one of the county's best known citizens, died suddenly at his home in South Montrose on Friday evening, June 5, 1936, at about 9:15 o'clock. Mr. Lake had been in ill health for many years, suffering a stroke of apoplexy about eight years ago. Although living a retired life, he suffered little pain and was able to be about his home. While unfastening his shoes preparatory to going to bed on Friday evening; he was suddenly stricken and quickly passed away. Mr. Lake was for Forty-five years engaged in stock buying in this county. He was for some years associated with such well known buyers as the late D. M. Roe and the late Frank Gray, also R. M. Hillis, of Montrose. The firm name of Lake, Roe & Co. was well known to the public for many years. A man of honest integrity, jovial and friendly, he numbered his friends and admirers by the hundreds. Deceased was born in Warren county, N. J., and was a son of Isaac and Margaret (Raub) Lake. He came to this county with his parents when he was a small boy and had lived practically all of his life in South Montrose. In early life he followed farming, and also taught school. In his later years he was engaged in the retail feed business, but owing to ill health retired from active life nine years ago. He also conducted a store in partnership with E. C. Lake several years. He attained his 79th year on May 27th. On Dec. 17, 1884, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Conklin, who survives her husband, together with the following children: Miss Lena Lake, of Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Clayton Garey and Mrs. Guy Robinson, of Montrose; Ralph and Mark Lake, of South Montrose. The funeral was largely attended on Monday afternoon at two o'clock in the South Montrose church, following a brief service at his late home. Interment was in the South Montrose cemetery, members of Montrose Lodge of Odd Fellows, of which he was long a member, conducting the commital service at his grave. The casket bearers were W. H. Allen, C. E. Allen, K. I. Norris, V. E. Roberts, Glenn Roberts and E, H. Ingraham. ------- South Montrose South Montrose, June 11 - Michael L. Lake died Friday evening, June 5, following a long illness. The deceased was born in New Jersey in 1857 the son of Isaac and Margaret Raub Lake. C.; Mrs. Clayton Garey and Mrs. Guy Robinson, Montrose; two sons, Ralph and Mark, South Montrose; a sister, Mrs. Loda Allen, South Montrose, and a brother, E. R. Lake, Springville. Services Monday were largely attended, the Rev. Mr. Weavers officiated. Members of the Montrose Lodge, I.O.O.F., conducted services at the grave. Interment was in South Montrose Cemetery. She suffered a stroke the preceding Thursday. Mrs. Lake before marriage was Miss Mary I. Conklin and had always lived in the community where she was held in the highest regard by all who knew her. She was long active in promoting the best interests of the community. Her survivors are three daughters, Miss Lena Lake, of Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Clayton Garey and Mrs. Guy B. Robinson of Montrose, and two sons, Ralph and Mark Lake of South Montrose. Her funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 in the So. Montrose Community church and interment was in the South Montrose cemetery. The Rev. F. W. Connell officiated. K. A. Bush had charge of funeral arrangements. ------ Mrs. Mary Lake; 83, Dies at Montrose Mrs. Mary Lake, 83, widow of Michael Lake, died Saturday (Aug. 10) at 11 p.m. in her home, South Montrose, after a brief illness. She is survived by two sons, Ralph and Mark, partners in the Lake Feed Store, South Montrose, and three daughters, Miss Lena, Washington, D.C., and Mrs. Clayton Garey and Mrs. Guy B. Robinson, wife of the Susquehanna County Commissioner, both of Montrose. The funeral will be tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. in the South Montrose Community Church with services by the pastor, the Rev. Frederick Connell, Interment South Montrose Cemetery. ------ Services Today for Mrs. Mary Lake South Montrose, Aug. 13 Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Lake, 83, widow of Michael Lake, who died at her home here Saturday night, will be conducted in the Community Church at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow by the pastor, the Rev. Frederick Connell of Montrose. Interment will be in the South Montrose Cemetery. Mrs. Lake is survived by two sons, Ralph and Mark, who conduct the Lake feed store here; three daughters, Mrs. Guy B. Robinson, wife of the chairman of the Susquehanna County Board of Commissioners; Mrs. Clayton Garey and Miss Lena Lake of Washington, D.C. For many years Mrs. Lake was active in the affairs of the Community Church and local civic and social activities. Her sons are among the best-known business-men in Bridgewater township. END from a Montrose, PA newspaper in Feb 1917 BEGIN South Montrose - Fire completely destroyed the large general store of Frank E. Barron on Sunday morning. Flames were seen shooting from the basement by a neighbor. An alarm brought out all the men of the vicinity, who formed a bucket brigade and succeeded in saving the nearby buildings, but the store and sheds attached were burned, together with practically all the contents. M. L. Lake & Son had an office in the building and were losers in the fire. Mr. Barron conducted the post office and all the books, stamps, etc. were found in good condition in a safe. The Lehigh Valley station, also located in the burned building, met with some loss.
