According to Esther Doyle Read 18 May 2005: BEGIN 844. LEMIC SMITH5 (Elizabeth Read4, Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 22 October 1853 in Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 11 September 1909 (Ramseyburg Cemetery; Latter Day Saints, hereinafter LDS, Batch #C509861, the LDS transcript of the Knowlton Township birth records gives his birth date as 22 October, his grave stone gives it as 25 September). Shortly after his birth, Lemic's parents moved to Oxford Township in Warren County. The family lived there until at least 1857. Lemic's sisters, Annie and Hulda were born in the township while the family was living there (LDS, Batch #C509871). Lemic appears on the 1860 census as a 6 year old child. He lived with his parents on a rented farm in Hope Township and attended school with his older sisters and brother—Emma, Catherine and Marshall (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 3, 26 June 1860, post office Serepta). Lemic was still at home with his parents in 1870. By that year, his parents had purchased a farm in Blairstown township. The 1870 census lists Lemic's occupation as "Works on a farm." He also attened school during the census year (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 35, 7 July 1870, post office Columbia). In an earlier version of Read Family Connections I stated that his wife's name was Elizabeth (1861- 1908) and that they had two children, Annie Smith (1878 - 1892) and Evelyn (1886 - 1904). This information is incorrect. Lemic C. Smith married Mary Catherine Linaberry on 28 March 1874 in Hainesburg, Knowlton Township, Warren County (LDS IGI). She was the daughter of Coonrad Linaberry and Martha E. Van Scoten. Mary Catherine was born 24 February 1854 in Warren County, New Jersey and died 18 May 1899 (Ramseyburg Cemetery). Mary Catherine's brother, Wesley Linaberry was married to Lemic's first cousin, Mary Catherine Titman5 (Malinda Read4, Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1), the daughter of his mother's sister Malinda Read and Baltis Titman. By 1880, Lemic and Mary Catherine had three children: Ida May (1875), Alice G. (1877) and Charles (who had been born in December of 1879). Lemic was employed as a farmer. He had a hired hand, 20 year old George Messler. The family lived in Knowlton Township (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 201, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, 14 June 1880, page 453D). The 1886 Weaver and Kern Warren County History and Directory lists "Lemuel C. " Smith as a farmer and drover residing in Knowlton Township. Between the 1880 and the 1900 census, Lemic and Mary Catherine had at least four more children: Floyd (1882), Grover Cleveland (1884), Martha (1886) and Earl (1897). The naming of their fourth son, Grover Cleveland Smith, clearly points to Lemic Smith's political affiliation. Grover Cleveland (1837-1908) ran for president of the United States in 1884, the year Grover Cleveland Smith was born. He was the first Democrat elected to the office after the Civil War. Cleveland served two terms as the 22nd and the 24th President of the United States. His first term extended from 1885 to 1889. He then left the White House and was elected for a second term in 1892. He served that term from 1893 to 1897. He was the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms. He was also the only president to marry in the White House while serving his term in office (he married 21 year old Francis Folsom in June 1886). President Cleveland was a native of New Jersey (although he had begun his politic career in New York). Like his grandfather Isaac Read III, Lemic Smith announced his political intentions with the naming of his son. Isaac Read III had named one of his sons Andrew Jackson Read after the 7th President (who was also a Democrat). Andrew Jackson Read was born in 1837, the year President Jackson left office. Lemic and Ida's eldest daughter Ida May married Stewart Albertson in 1896, the year before their youngest child, Earl Cecil Smith, was born. Their second daughter, Alice, died on 30 December 1898. Mary Catherine Linaberry Smith died less than five months later on 18 May 1899. She and Alice were buried in Ramseyburg Cemetery located adjacent to the Delaware River in the town of Delaware in Knowlton Township. Although Mary Catherine died in May 1899, she still appears on the 1900 census. In 1900, Lemic Smith's household was listed in the census as adjacent to that of his sister Hulda Smith Hartung, her husband George and their four children. Lemic Smith had five children who were still living at home in 1900: Charles, Floyd, Cleveland, Martha, and Earl. Lemic was a farmer. He owned his farm in Knowlton Township free and clear of mortgages (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 7B, 28 June 1900). Over the next decade the family continued to experience deaths within the immediate family circle. In 1904, Lemic and Mary's son Floyd died shortly before his 22nd birthday. The following year, 25 year old Charles Smith died. Lemic died four years later on 11 September 1909, he was just short of his 57th birthday. He was buried with Mary Catherine, and the three children who had predeceased him—Alice, Floyd and Charles—in Ramseyburg Cemetery. Their graves were visited on 15 April 2005. At the time of Lemic's death, his two eldest surviving children, Ida May and Grover Cleveland, were both married. Martha was 23 years old and Earl was 13. Earl was sent to live with his older sister Ida May Albertson and her husband Stewart. Stewart Albertson was a general farmer in the Delaware area of Knowlton Township (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 133, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 4B, 28 April 1910). Lemic Smith and Mary C. Linaberry had 7 children who were born between 1875 and 1897. They had at least 7 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 18 second great-grandchildren, and 4 third great-grandchildren. Total Identified descendants equals 46. CHILDREN OF LEMIC C.
