from Donald E. Lake ... BEGIN Descendants of John Hubbard Lake 1. John Hubbard1 LAKE (Ira and Mary Lake Notes.) (Sideling Hill Primitive Baptist Congregation from 1790, Fulton County Historical Society, 1991.) (Dr Malcolm E. Mellott.) (History of Tonoloway Baptist Church, Harry Stuart Holman, 1980.) (Mr Mike J. Horton.) (Mr Donald McKee.) (Mr L. Chester England.) (Mr Thomas E. Moffett.) (Fulton County Cemetery Listing.). John was born at Somerset Co., NJ, on 3 Jul 1775. He was baptized at Tonoloway Baptist, Fulton Co., PA, in Oct 1804. Religion: (an unknown value). He married Charity Brewer, daughter of Matthew Brewer and Mary Magdalene Emery, at NJ on 14 Jan 1796. John died on 30 Sep 1824 at Belfast Twp., Bedford Co., PA, at age 49. His body was interred at Tonoloway Baptist, Fulton Co., PA. CAVEAT -- John Hubbard Lake A lot of time and effort has been given in effort to document the parentage of John in New Jersey. Numerous films from the Church of Latter Day Saints have been reviewed in this effort. Two paid researchers in New Jersey were employed to search for documentation. Neither was able to find any documentation. Also, a lot of printed material has been reviewed. Plus a lot of correspondence has been directed to people who have listed John and Jacobus and Arreantie as son and parents. Only one correspondent responded and he said he had copied the connection. The rest did not respond indicating any response probably would have been negative as to any documentation. The first use of the middle name Hubbard was found in the work by Dr. Malcolm Mellott in the brief outline he did on the Lake Family of Fulton County. Many researchers have used the name John Hubbard and parents of John as Jacobus Lake and Arreantie Hubbard Lake. Probably copied from the work by Dr Mellott and passed on many times. In his will, Jacobus Lake has a son John listed. The will bequeaths John less than any of his sisters. Yet this was at a time when the male almost always, if not always, received more than the females except for the spouse. England, in his summary of the Lake Family, wrote that the family was unhappy with John for marrying Charity Brewer. The New Jersey Lakes had money and were considered well off. The Brewers were poor. In his book, “A History of My People and Yours”, Claud Nelson McMillan writes that John, son of Jacobus, birth date unknown, seems to have returned from the Grants in New York, to New Jersey and that the author of the “The Germans of New Jersey”, indicates that he (John) married and with his family emigrated to the Illinois country. Nothing further is known of John, McMillan writes. There is reference in the will to John and a grandson James, son of John, which seems to cloud the issue. Perhaps McMillan has confused some people. When John Hubbard and Charity left New Jersey they had one son, James. This James was born after the date of Jacobus’ will. Jacobus and Arreantie had large land holdings that were in Somerset and Middlesex Counties, New Jersey. John was born in Somerset County. John and Charity’s first child, James, was born in Somerset County, New Jersey before they migrated. James is English for Jacobus, so perhaps named after John's father. Perhaps John departed for Illinois and decided to settle in Pennsylvania when they got that far. A lot of migrants from New Jersey settled in southern Bedford, now Fulton County. Jacobus had a 1000 acre holding in a land grant in Albany County, New York. There is writing that John Lake, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, had one thousand acres in Bedford. But no record has been found of that. Could John, talking of this New York land grant, have been twisted to have been his and in Pennsylvania? According to McMillan, John had been at the New York land grant. Dr Mellott, as referred to above, was the son of a great granddaughter of John and Charity. It seems most probable that his mother was the source of much of the data that was contained in the work Mellott did. Given this, it also seems most probable that his work must be considered credible and correct in that John's parents were Jacobus and Arreantie. Another son of John and Charity, Jacob, had also married a Mellott. Perhaps another connection for Jacobus and John. Jacobus was married twice. He had a son John with his first wife. This son has been identified as John Stryker Lake. It is assumed from this that his first wife’s surname was Stryker. Perhaps these two sons named John were identified by using their mother’s maiden name as their middle name. For those believing in naming patterns, John named his first son James, English for Jacobus. His third son was named Jacob, perhaps for John's father. There is a heading of caveat. The reader must be aware that it has not been documented that John was the son of Jacobus and Arreantie. The above is circumstantial yet believed credible. There were 11 children born of this marriage. The first was born in New Jersey prior to the migration to Bedford Co., PA: James L. Lake, born in NJ; Daniel Lake, Jacob Lake, Anna Lake, John Lake, Polly Lake, William M. Lake, Christiana Lake, Peter Lake, Elizabeth Lake, and Ephriam Lake. Census 1800 has John listed in Bedford Co. with these family members: Free white males: under 10 years of age - 1; 26 to 45 years of age - 1. Free white females: 26 to 45 years of age - 1. Census 1820 showed John living in Belfast Twp. Two members of the family were employed in agriculture. The breakdown of the household by the census was by free white males and free white females. The male breakdown: under age 10 was 2; 10 - 16 was 1; 16 - 18 was 1; 16 - 26 was 2; 26 - 45 was 0; and 45 and over was 1. The female breakdown: under 10 was 3; 10 - 16 was 1; 16 - 26 was 0; 26 - 45 was 1; and 45 and over was 0. Son James followed John on the enumeration sheet so they lived next to one another. Census 1850 shows Charity living in Belfast Twp. Her age was shown as 73. Her birthplace was listed as New Jersey and she owned real estate valued at $1200.00. John had died in 1824. Living with her was Elizabeth Lake, age 25. The sequence of the dwelling and family numbers indicate she lived near her sons Jacob, Daniel, and William. John and Charity were members of Tonoloway at the beginning of the 19th Century. He was baptized in October 1804 and Charity was baptized in May 1805. John, it has been wrote, was of German extraction and settled in the vicinity of what is now Needmore in what is now Fulton County and on what has for many years been known as the Walker Mellott place. John, it has been wrote, was a gunsmith and made bells. Charity was supposed to be the first Brewer to come to that part of Pennsylvania. (Source: HTB) John became a member of Tonoloway in 1804. Charity's maiden name has also been spelled Bro(e)wer. Her mother's maiden name has been spelled Emry (Embry). John being of German extraction is to be questioned. By census information and family papers, he did come from NJ. The Dutch records of New Netherlands show his Lake line to be English. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Internal Affairs, Bureau of Land Records, Warrant Registers (PIA), has the following information: Number of Warrant - 299; Name of Warrantee - John Lake; Description of Warrant - Survey; Quanity - 50; Warrant Location - Belfast; Date of Warrant - 10 Mar 1815; Date of Return - 6 Oct 1864; Acres Returned - 45; Name of Patentee - Baltzer Mellott; Where Recorded - Volume A (or H), No. 58, Page 142; Where Survey is Copied - Book C187, Page 2. J. White file there is listed, John H. Lake, son of Jacobus Lake, born about 1751. This may be John Stryker Lake as there is also listed Garrett Striker Lake, born 8 Mar 1753, Somerset, Co, NJ; died 21 Nov 1838, White Creek, NY. This may be the first connection found of John Hubbard to Jacobus. The birth date would approximate that of John Stryker Lake and thus confusion as to the two Johns born to Jacobus and his two wives. In the Ira and Mary Lake notes there is a sheet of paper in handwriting that does not seem to be theirs that shows John Lake born 3 Jul 1775. John's tombstone reads aged "49-2-27" which calculates to 3 Jul 1775 also. Bedford Co., PA, Belfast Twp., Tax Records 1806: John Lake 0.63. Charity BREWER (IML.) (HSH.) (MEL.) (HTB.) (ENG.) (MOF.) (Mr Rick Brewer.) (Ms Carol Rein Shwayder.) (Mr William M. Swope.) (FCL.). Charity was born at NJ on 9 Sep 1779 (date has also been given as 8 Sep 1778. Place of birth on (FAG) given as Monmouth Co., NJ). She was baptized at Tonoloway Baptist, Fulton Co., PA, in May 1805. Religion: (an unknown value). Charity died on 20 Dec 1857 at Fulton Co., PA, at age 78. Her body was interred at Tonoloway Baptist, Fulton Co., PA. In (HTB) Charity is said to have been the first Brewer to have settled in that area which is not correct. Other Brewers had settled in the Southern Fulton (Bedford) area and according to (HOB) came from VA. In the Ira and Mary Lake notes there is a sheet in handwriting that does not seem to be theirs that shows Charity's surname spelling as Brower which was an earlier form of spelling and most likely Dutch. The surname Bro(e)wer is also shown in (MOF) and Emry as mother's maiden name. In the summary of the Lake History by L. Chester England, he states that Charity's mother's name was Miss Emery and her mother's name was Beamer and is said to have come from across the Atlantic (probably from Holland). Further, one of her sisters (Beamer) died on the way across. England goes on to write that Charity's people came later to Fulton Co. from NJ and remained for awhile before moving to Greene Co., PA. Charity rode on horseback to visit her parents. This has to be questioned. It is unlikely she rode half way across the state. It would seem correct to say she rode on horseback to visit the family before they removed to Greene Co. Children of John Hubbard1 Lake and Charity Brewer were as follows:  2. i. James L.2.  3. ii. Daniel.  4. iii. Jacob.  5. iv. Anna.  6. v. John.  7. vi. Polly Mary.  8. vii. William M.  9. viii. Christiana Ann.  10. ix. Peter.  11. x. Elizabeth.  12. xi. Ephriam. END Date: Sun, 17 Sep 2017 20:05:39 -0700 From: Annette Truesdell BEGIN From my notes, "Dr. M.E. Mellott's book "Lake Fam of Fulton Co. PA" says that John Hubbard is the son of Jacobus Lake and Arreantie Hubbard. No sources are cited. I would suggest that perhaps an incorrect link was made to Jacobus and Arreantie, based on the middle name "Hubbard". At the time of John Hubbard Lake's birth, Jacobus' son, John Stryker Lake was still living. This would have given Jacobus two sons named John. Not impossible, but unlikely. John Hubbard Lake is not named in any baptismal records, as are all of Jacobus' other children, nor is he named in either Jacobus or Arreantie's wills. I would suggest another possiblity is that John Hubbard may be the son of John Stryker Lake, and a grandson of Jacobus. John Stryker Lake was married to Ann Heath, dau of John Heath and Ann Lewis. So far, I've only been able to identify two of their children: James Lake, b. 1773 per the 1850 census and named as a grandchild in Jacobus' will; and Mary Lake, b. 5 Feb 1783, wife of Elias Maple, son of Benjamin Maple II and his wife Isabella per the "Trenton Federalist", V.7, No. 336, 5 Aug 1805, pg. 3. There is a 10 year difference in the birth dates of these two children and it is quite possible that there could have been several other children born to John and Ann in between. I have no proof of this but perhaps in time, other records might be found to support or refute this theory." END Chris Chester, www.brouwergenealogy.blogspot.com, 27 Sep 2013 ... [28] John Hubbard Lake is claimed as a son of Jacobus Lake Some Family Tree databases found at Ancestry.com (2013) place John Hubbard Lake as a son of Jacobus Lake and Arreantie Hubbard. However, a Bible record (published in New Netherland Connections, vol. 4, p. 19) regarding the family of Jacobus Lake, does not include a son named John Hubbard Lake. The databases (as well as the Bible record) also misses the fact that Jacobus Lake was married twice, his first wife being Styntje Strycker (five children born between 1745 and 1755, including a son named John Striker Lake). Jacobus Lake and his second wife, Arreantie Lake had four children recorded in the Bible, born between 1766 and 1777. The eleven children recorded below are named in John Lake's will. No record of their births have been found. Some birth and death dates have been taken from gravestone transcriptions, while others are from a number of family trees and databases published online, none of which provided an original source for the date. She lived in Holland, somewhere on the river Rhine. My Grandfather was born in Holland and he and one brother came to America prior to the Revolutionary War and settled in New Jersey. Both brothers enlisted in the American Army from the state of New Jersey. I think my Grandfather’s brothers name was William and my Grandfather was called Mattavis Brower. The english of Mattavis is Mathew. It was subsequent to this that the name was changed to Brewer. Grandfather Mattavis Brower enlisted in the American Army twice. Under his first enlistment he served three or four years and under the second until the close of the war, making the length of his service the full seven years. At the time of their first enlistment the two brothers were at a ball when the recruiting officer appeared on the scene. The two brothers too off their pomps (shoes they danced in) and placed them behind the chimney, where they remained until the close of the war, when my Grandfather returned and got them. William Brower was detailed to go to Stoney Point and it was the understanding of my Grandfather that he was there at the battle, but from that date to this there has never anything been heard of him or any of his lineage. He was not married at the time of the battle. My Grandfather, Mattavis Brower, was married after the war. I do not know what state he was married but of in New Jersey he soon moved to Central Pennslvania in Somerset County near Siding Hill. I do not know for a certainty the name of his wife but believe it was Elizabeth Emery. I knew one of her brothers. He was called Jim Emery and for a time he lived near Wheeling, West Virginia. My Grandfather, Mattavis Brower, had as far as I know 7 (seven) children. I understand that Charity was the oldest, She married a man by the name of Lake. They also lived near Siding Hill. I believe that Elizabeth was next oldest. She married Abraham Hendershott. Issac B. Hendershott of Otley Iowa, is a grandson, and Dr. John Thomas Hendershott of Monroe is also their grandson. I believe that John was the next child, he was married to a girl by the name of Bartholomew. He was a blacksmith by trade. He moved in an early day, sometime about 1830, to Val Pariso, Porter County Indiana. He had several children four of whom were called John, Jacob, Issac and Elizabeth. I knew John and Elizabeth. Elizabeth ,married a man by the name of Ault and lived for a time in Winterset, Iowa. John also lived in Winterset; later he moved to Lewis in Cass County, from there to Atlantic, Cass County and from there to Omaha. I have lost track of him. John Brewer, the father of Elizabeth, John, Jacob and Issac, moved from Val Pariso, Indianna to Winterset, where he died in the early sixties. I was at Winterset and saw him together with his son and daughter, John and Elizabeth in the spring of 1858. William I believe was the next (fourth) child of my grandfather. I understand that he lived at one time near Koshockton, Ohio. Mathew was probably next. I think he was a famer. I sawhim once when he returned to Pennsylvania to see my father. I was at that time a small boy. He lived near Worster, Ohio. Conrad Brewer was the next (sixth) child. He was my father and I will speak of him later. Mary was the next after father and was the youngest child. She was never married but had one child who was called David H. Brewer. William Sam. Harvey was his father. He had a number of children. He was married twice; his first wife was Martha Burns and his second was a Cathers. He had a boy by the name of Robert. My grandfather in early days moved from Siding Hill to Green County, Pennsylvania, near Harvey’s Post Office on Ten Mile Creek. My Grandfather was a blacksmith and his home and shop were near to Squire Gray’s house (west of it) in the creek bottom that came down from Rickey Settlement, just to the left of the road as you go to Waynesburg. He died some time between 1826 & 1837 and was buried about a mile or a mile and a half east of his old home on a high promontory to the right of the road as you go up the hill from the old Wm. Harvey place (William Cook owned it later) towards Waynesburg about half way up the hill and to your right; his wife is buried here with him. I think, but am not certain that their graves are the only two on the promontory. Conrad Brewer, my father, was born as I understand, while my grandfather yet lived at Siding Hill. He was born May 4, 1798. He learned the blacksmith trade from his father but worked at it little, in fact as far back as I remember he was a farmer. Was married in 1828 or 1829 to Rachel Anderson. Rachel Anderson and her brother James were left motherless when quite small and were bound to Mariah Harvey who raised both children. James in after years located in Marrietta, Ohio. Rachel Anderson, my mother, was born March 14, 1809, in Green County Pennsylvania. My father and mother commenced married life at my grandfather’s old home place on ten mile creek. At one time they owned a track of land, something like 100 acres round about the old home place. This comprised a part of the old Squire Gray farm. About 1835 or 1836 they moved from here West about 5 miles, just over the hill East from Jacktown (Jacksonville) at the fork of the road, and bought a farm from George B. Craft to wich I have the deed. About 1847 my father disposed of this place and ,oved to Wheeling Creek on a farm that belonged to one of the Stagger boys. They moved here one or two years and then moved up the creek farther about three miles (just above the old Tom Hughes farm; between his farm and that of David Kinney). He lived there until Nov. 3, 1854, when he died of Typhoid fever at the age of fifty six years. He was buried at Harveys Church on Ten Mile Creek. My mother lived with my sister Henrietta Hughes until she died, then kept house for Hughes afterwards until the fall of 1867 when I went from Missouri back to Pennsylvania and brought her out to Missouri. She stayed with me at my home in bethany, Missouri, about 6 months and them went to my brother’s, Mathew Brewer at Rhodes, Iowa and lived with him until his death. Shortly after his death in July 1892 she again made her home with me until she died Aug. 20, 1894 of old age. She was buried in Woodland Cemetery in Des Moines Iowa. My mother and father had four children, John, Henrietta, Mathew and James A., all born in the order named. John was born May 14, 1830 at the home near old Squire Place, as were also Henrietta and Mathew. John at one time learned the shoemaker's trade but never followed it, and took ti farming. He was married in 1852or 1853 to Sarah Jane Cathers by Rev. John Leonard, of the Campellite Church. He had a large family of children, nin or ten. I know Tobert, James A. (named for me), Rachael and Mary. James A. Is a blacksmith and works neat Wanesburg, Pennsylvania. Henrietta, the second child was born Jan 14, 1832. She married Thomas Hughes about the same time John married Sarah Cathers. They had no children and she died June 3, 1865 and is burried at Harvey Church near father. He husband married a second time to a woman by the name Lohr (Loar) and is still living near White Cottage Post Office on Greene County Penn. Mathew the third child, was born May 15, 1834. He learned the cabinet maker’s trade under David H. Brewer, and became a very proficient mechanic and was recognized as a master. He married Margaret Nicholls about 1855 at Jacktown, Pennsylvania, where he farmed for a short time and then commenced work at his trade. In the autumn of 1859 he moved to Edonville (now Rhodes), Marshall County, Iowa. He lived here the rest of his life except for a short time he lived at Emerson, Mills County in 1875. While living at Rhodes he worked at his trade and farmed. He died Feb 7, 1892 at his home from a complication of diseases. He was buried in Rhodes Cemetery. He had five children: Jennie, Willis P. Born 1858, Annie born Feb 14, 1860, Etta born 1862 and Mollie born 1866. Jennie died when quite small. Willis P. Ws married to a girl in Dakota about 1880. He is now living in Colorado and has a large family of children. Anna was married in the spring of 1876 to David Curtis White at Rhodes. He was a dry goods merchant and “Latter Day Saint”. They moved from there to Henry County, Missouri. Hav a family of ten children , or so. They re yet living in Henry County, Missouri. END
