The following (including the children) is according to Wyndham Clampett : BEGIN Capt. John Nation made his will on 15 December 1772, and it was proved in May 1774 in Guilford Co. court. He left the plantation "whereon I now live" to son Joseph, with the proviso that Bethiah could live there during her widowhood. He bequeathed her all the personal property. If she remarried her portion would be confined to one-third, and she was to divide the other two-thirds between sons John and Joseph. If she died without remarrying, John was to receive a bed and "furniture" [bedstead], chest and box, and Joseph was to inherit the remaining personal property. Capt. NATION left one shilling to each of the other children, Christopher NATION, Elizabeth VICKREY, Anna BULLER [BULLA], Bethiah ROBINS and Frances ROBINS. Executors were wife Bethiah and son Joseph. Witnesses were members of a family he had known since Shenandoah Valley days: Benjamin BEESON, Sr., Isaac BEESON, Jr., and Richard BEESON. The Captain may have died closer to the 15 December 1772 date of his will than to the May 1774 date of its probate. Proving it promptly was not neessary because there was only one principle heir. Many legal transactions were delayed until absolutely necessary [or avoided all together] during this period because of the high cost of satisfying the graft built into the fee system so detested by the Regulatore [whose leaders had included Christopher NATION]. Paying officials at every step in the process was a strong disincentive to invoking any legal action. It is unlikely that NATION's will was proved upon his death and more likely that it was proved only when the principle heir wanted to sell his inheritance in 1774. Marrying while indentured was discouraged, no NATION probably waited until his term expired, but he apparently married immediately afterward. His daughter Elizabeth married Marmaduke VICKREY by 1740, so NATION himself must have been a father shortly after 1719. While still in New Jersey, NATION married Bethiah Robins. When they married, John and Bethiah were twenty-two and eighteen, respectively. Bethiah Robins was born at Chestnut Brook, Upper Freehold Twp., Crosswicks, NJ, in Old Monmouth [now Burlington] Co., where he made his will in 1709. Daniel ROBINS in 1696 and where he made his will in 1709. Daniel ROBINS was one of the original freeholders of Woodbridge, NJ. Joseph ROBINS, eldest son and second child of Daniel and Hope [POTTER] ROBINS, was born there on 12 March 1670/1671. Joseph's "publication for marriage with Anna PACK" was dated 22 April 1692; they were married on 8 June 1692 in Woodbridge. Anna was a daughter of George and Anna PACK of Elizabeth, NJ. John and Bethiah [ROBINS] NATION named surviving children Joseph after her father and bother, Anna after her mother and sister, and Frances after her great-grandmother and sister, as well as John's mother. John and Bethiah each had namesake children too. In the next generation, Marmaduke and Elizabeth [Nation] Vickrey named children John and Bethiah. [They also named one son Christopher after her brother Christopher NATION.] END email correspondence ... BEGIN Posted by: "Sara" july37@cox.net turkeypt2 Date: Fri May 31, 2013 7:35 am ((PDT)) US & International Marriage Records 1560-1900 at ancestry.com has Matthew Robbins married to Bethiah Nation 1750 in NC. We know from the will of John Nation his daughter Bethiah was married to a Robins. The parentage of Matthew Robbins is unknown. He wasn't the son of Elisha & Mary Wade Robins or born in Wales according to research done by John German. John was uncertain about Matthew & Bethiah's marriage. Probably because he was unable to locate an official document for it. John was very thorough & if he couldn't find a record, most likely it doesn't exist. I have a file compiled by Dr R. Lanier Jones on June 27, 1997. Dr Jones records Nancy Ann Robbins was the daughter of Matthew & Bethiah Nation Robbins. He has several children attached to Matthew & Bethiah, among them Nancy Ann Robbins who married William Swaim, Jonathan Robbins & Matthew Robbins. If Dr Jones' work is accurate then it's possible the Jonathan Robbins named as bondsman on 4-27-1765 was Nancy Ann's brother. Jonathan & Matthew/Mathias Robbins who were witnesses to the marriage of Rachel Swaim would be Nancy Ann's brothers. I can't verify the accuracy of these relationships or the work of Dr. Jones. However, it may provide some clues for you to follow. Has any DNA testing had been done on this line of Matthew Robbins? Posted by: "Sara Hoffman" july37@cox.net turkeypt2 Date: Fri May 31, 2013 10:19 am ((PDT)) After my last post I thought about the basis for Dr. R. Lanier Jones' work. I believe the origin was J.M. Robbins who to my knowledge offered no sources. A family group sheet for Matthew Robbins & Bethiah Nation, their daughter Nancy Ann Robbins & sons Jonathan Robbins & Matthew Robbins was published in the "Robbins Journal" April 1990 Vol. I, No.4, pg. 10, Kevin K. Mittge, Editor. The source given was J.M. Robbins. This is the J.M. Robbins who supposely authored the Wales origin for a group of Robbins in NC. Most of the members here know John German spent years disputing this theory & finally through DNA testing it was found to be inaccurate. Although the DNA provided proof some researchers still had/have a difficult time accepting the results. Why any reliable researcher would want to ignore DNA evidence is a puzzle to me? It would be great to have DNA from the Matthew Robbins line. I suspect he is a Daniel Robinson/Robins descendant.
