We know he was living on July 30, 1733 when the Boston Gazette published the article about him. According to the Isaac Robins transaction dated March 25, 1737, Daniel Robins was deceased so we can conclude he died between the above dates of 1733-1737. From "A History of Trenton 1679-1929" by James Kerney in 1929: The Early Stand Against Slavery "Conservative ideas prevailed in 1730 in the Chesterfield Monthly Meeting, but abhorrence for slavery had crept in and less than a score of years afterwards the Society had purged itself of participation in the slave traffic and was preparing for that long campaign against it which finally led up to the Civil War and Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. In October 1731, Friends at Bethlehem, near Belvidere, set up a branch of the Chesterfield Meeting with Charles Wolverton and Daniel Robins as overseers appointed at Chesterfield and reporting there." R. 1835 might be Sarah, daughter of John Rockafellar (Sr.) and Margaret Kitchen. In his will, written in 1828, John mentioned his sons and daughters but did not name them, except for son Samuel. In fact, I do not know when Samuel died, so perhaps this stone is his. Another possibility for the R stones is someone from the Robbins family. Daniel Robins owned the whole tract of land that the Robins Hill development stands on back in the early 1700s, and his son Isaac Robins married Azubiah Thatcher about 1720. On the other hand, Hannah Kitchen, daughter of Thomas and Sarah Kitchen, married Vincent Robins. They had a daughter Sarah Robins who is not known to have married. But 1835 is a late date; Sarah Robins would have been at least 75 years old. The I. R. might be John Robins, son of Ann Kitchen and Vincent Robins. He died after 1789. It seems most likely Elizabeth Robins Morford was the daughter of Daniel Robins b. 1692 so agree with this theory on Elizabeth. Daniel Robins, Jr. named as bondsman on the marriage record for Hannah Robins to James Cox., Jr. & is thought to be the father of Hannah Robins. However, I don't believe we can rule out other possibilities. One is Hannah Robins was the daughter of Jacob Robins b. abt. 1698 , d. 1774 in Monmouth Co., NJ & his wife Williamity. Hannah b. abt. 1726 is mentioned as the daughter of Jacob Robins recorded in the ledger of Dr. James Newell of Monmouth Co. Dr. Newell treated the children of Jacob Robins. This Hannah was the granddaughter of Joseph & Hannah Pack Robins. Hannah Robins had a brother Joseph Robins b. abt. 1720 & d. aft. 1773. A Joseph Robins witnessed the Will of James Cox, Jr. in 1753 & took his inventory. James Cox, Jr. was the son of James & Ann Cox, Sr., a wealthy man in Upper Freehold, Monmouth Co., NJ. James Cox, Jr.'s second wife was Elizabeth Fenton. Jacob Robins had a brother Nathaniel Robins b. abt. 1696 & d. 1739, wife named Sarah. I have very little information on Nathaniel Robins son of Joseph & Hannah Pack Robins. From the 1753 Will of James Cox, Jr. he had two children by Hannah Robins, Nathaniel & John. Another possibility is Hannah could have been the daughter of Nathaniel Robins b. abt. 1696. James Cox, Sr. married as his second wife Rebecca Stillwell widow of Ebenezer Salter. Ebenezer & Rebecca Stillwell were the parents of Meribah Salter wife of Joseph Robins b. abt. 1745, d. 1786. This Joseph was the son of Hannah's brother Joseph Robins b. 1720. I don't know how this all fits together. Right now, it seems to me there are too many family ties to the line of Joseph & Hannah Pack Robins for Hannah Robins Cox & her husband James Cox, Jr. to assign Hannah Robins as the daughter of Daniel Robins, Jr. Possibly belong to 82., child i ... 1713 child #1, Elizabeth, born [15] 1718 John Morford born [15] 1739 child #1, Elizabeth, and John Morford married [15] 1745 child #2, Hannah, and James Cox married [15] 1748 child #1, Elizabeth, died [15] 1812 John Morford died [15] Notes - Child #1, Elizabeth, lived in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Co., by William Lawrence, John Schank, Jarat Schank and Joseph Dorfett. Dated Apr. 9, 1716. Proved by Executors, obadiah Bowne and Richard Saltar, Apr. 11, 1716, before Ro. Hunter. NOTES: A ROUGH ATTEMPT TO ALPHABETIZE THE LIST IS INCLUDED AT THE BEGINNING AS AN AID IN LOCATING NAMES OF INTEREST. THERE ARE MANY INSTANCES OF USING THE ORIGINAL "f's" INSTEAD OF "s's". NOTE THAT MANY OF THESE DEBTS WERE "ON THE BOOK" OR LISTED "BY THE BOOK". EVIDENTLY, A PERSON (THERE ARE A VERY FEW WOMEN) BORROWED THE MONEY BY SIGNING THE BOOK SO THEY WERE INDEBTED TO JOHN BOWNE "BY THE BOOK"! [1680] Samuel Dennis and Daniel Robins were appointed, Novem- ber 16th, to superintend the construction of a causeway over the meadow from Dunham's mill to the upland on the other side the stream — John Bishop, Junr., to build "a good horse bridge " over the Creek. This order for a " horse bridge" was made null and void at a subsequent meeting, the universal desire being expressed for a "good cart bridge " instead of it. So the plan of the bridge was enlarged to accommodate vehicles. Another Town Clerk was sworn into office in January, 1693. Samuel Dennis had become tired ot it, besides being burdened with a multitude of other public cares. His suc- cessor, the fourth Clerk of the Corporation, was Thomas Pike, son of the distinguished Capt. John Pike. For some cause not now known, Dennis was chosen Town Clerk instead of Pike on the 11th of April, 1694, and was required to appear to take the usual oath. Richard Powell, Daniel Robins, and Obadiah Ayers, Senior, were sent to bring him to the meeting for that purpose ; but he stubbornly refused to come. Pike was, therefore, re-elected, and held the office until 1711 — a period of eighteen years. Between 1707 and 1711 his time was largely occupied in laying out lots for the Freeholders, and recording them. BEGIN Posted by: "Sara Hoffman" july37@cox.net turkeypt2 Date: Thu Jul 23, 2009 11:18 am ((PDT)) Please see message # 2605 by June Nash Lindquist posted on June 27, 08. This may be of some assistance about the William & Thomas Robbins. From records available Daniel Robins, Jr. b. Nov. 27, 1666 died before 1756 in Hunterdon Co., NJ. The exact date of his death is unknown, he had no will. From researching records connected with Daniel Jr., we have estimated he probably died sometime in the 1740's. Recorded In the "Chesterfield NJ Monthly Meeting Records"," 7 mo, 7, 1727" Daniel Robins requested a certificate for himself & wife Mary to Friend's Meeting in Buckingham. In 1731, Daniel & wife Mary were received at Wrightstown, Bucks Co., PA Monthly Meeting by certificate. On July 30, 1733, it appears he is back in Hunterdon Co when the "New England Weekly Journal" published an article that referred to his 13 children & 62 grandchildren. I don't know of any other record that places Daniel Robins, Jr. in PA or in the western territory of PA. Bucks Co. is close to Hunterdon Co., NJ just separated by the Delaware River, in contrast to Westmoreland/Fayette Co., PA is many miles west from Bucks Co., PA & Hunterdon, NJ. Westmoreland Co. wasn't formed until 1773 & Fayette Co later in 1783 was formed out of Westmoreland. Although DNA testing has proved Daniel Robins, Sr. descendants migrated from NJ to VA, PA & NC etc., I believe the Daniel Robins in question who had property on George's Creek was not Daniel Robins, Jr. It is possible the Daniel Robins & William Robins named in the article were Daniel Robins descendants. Maybe June can help us here as she has sponsored tests for her William Robbins line of PA & they have a relationship with other NJ Daniel Robins descendants. There are Letters of Administration for the estate of Daniel ROBINS of Amwell Twp, Hunterdon Co dated 21 Feb 1763. Typically Letters of Administration are written within a few days of death. The Letters name Frances ROBINS "widdow" (second or third spouse of Daniel Jr?) and Thomas ATKINSON as administratrix and bondsman. Frances married again by Sep of 1764 ... to John PIERCE. > I believe the Daniel Robins in question who had property on George's > Creek was not Daniel Robins, Jr. It is possible the Daniel Robins & > William Robins named in the article were Daniel Robins descendants. I was wondering how possible it is that the Daniel ROBINS who had property on George's Creek was a son of Daniel ROBINS Jr. Little is known about the first son (Daniel) of Daniel Jr. -- Marshall Lake -- mlake@mlake.net -- http://mlake.net Posted by: "June Nash Lindquist" junenash@pacbell.net JNLIND Date: Fri Jul 24, 2009 12:40 pm ((PDT)) Brian and Marshall, The court evidence is still missing. Question 1. At what date and by which court did Daniel Robins acquire those two huge land tracts, Fidelity and Reliance? How did he acquire them? Was Daniel wealthy? Those are several hundred acres each, and should have an identifiable grantor. We can assume Penn? If he bought it outright from Penn have we missed finding the paperwork to show the place and date of purchase by Daniel? William as administrator sold to at least twenty or more purchasers, among them, Gallatin and other history makers of Fayette. Question 2. William Robins as Administrator. No court record yet as to any legal paper enabling William to administrate for the said Daniel Robins. Were those records destroyed? By what authority and where? Perhaps daily court journal in Bucks. Perhaps attorneys or land agencies were allowed to do this? Pre-Fayette county records in Westmoreland records do not show administration for either Fidelity or Reliance Tract either. Perhaps Bedford. My next try. June Additionally, I find it hard to believe that my William Robins was sufficiently prepared to personally administrate the distribution of those tracts. How do we know that the Daniel that died c1763 was Daniel Jr. (age 97) vs. Daniel III (age about 69) or possibly even a Daniel IV (possible age 30-40? The remarriage of Frances argues for a younger man. Posted by: "Sara Hoffman" july37@cox.net turkeypt2 Date: Fri Jul 24, 2009 3:17 pm ((PDT)) "In 1748, 3-Daniel & wife Elizabeth, (Deed A-3 pg. 42) sold their Upper Freehold land & moved to Amwell Township, Hunterdon County, where he had a tavern. On February 21, 1763, 3-Daniel died leaving a second wife Frances, a widow. A short time later, on April 1, 1763, his 1748 Monmouth County sale deed carries a note confirming that the 1748 sale took place. It appears that his estate questioned the sale. "Newspaper Extracts in the Colonial New Jersey Historical Series", Vol. V, pg. 326/7, on February 14, 1764, lists his tavern "at the foot of Robins Hill" to be sold and states he was the son of Daniel & Mary (Parker) Robins." Robins, Robbins of New Jersey", pg. 8. It is quite possible that the Daniel Robins who migrated to Bucks Co., PA 1727 to 1731 was not Daniel Robins, Jr.The key to this question is the certificate that Daniel Robins requested for himself & his wife from the Chesterfield Monthly Meeting. Did it name his wife as Mary? If if did this is an indication it was Daniel Robins, Jr but if it didn't give his wife's name, it's speculative as to what Daniel Robins moved to Bucks Co., PA. I haven't looked at an original copy, has anyone else? "Genealogical & Personal Memorial of Mercer Co., NJ" by F. B. Lee Vol. I pg. 339. records this Daniel to Bucks Co., as Daniel Robins, Jr. As most Robbins researchers already know, not all the information for the Robbins Family as recorded by Frances Bazley Lee is correct. Posted by: "Sara Hoffman" july37@cox.net turkeypt2 Date: Fri Jul 24, 2009 7:21 pm ((PDT)) This is in response to my last posting after reading it. I decided to check the reference because I didn't recall the newspaper article said that Daniel Robins with the tavern at Robins Hill in Hunterdon Co was the son of Daniel & Mary Parker Robins. This is an incorrect statement & isn't part of the newspaper article. I believe pg. 8 of the "Robins, Robbins of NJ" should read, "he is assumed to have been the son of Daniel & Mary Parker Robins". The following is the exact quote from the Newspaper: "Trenton, February 14, 1764." "To be sold at publick Vendue, to the highest Bidder, on Saturday, the 14th Day of April next, on the Premises, between the Hours of 12 and 5 o'Clock, The noted Tavern house, and 60 Acres of Land, besides Allowance, situated at the Foot of Robin's Hill, in Amwell: there is a bearing Orchard. Barn and other necessary Buildings, the Mansion-house large, and almost new, and well situated either for a Tavern or Store, late the Property of Daniel Robins, deceased; seized and taken in Execution at the Suit of James Benezet, Townsend White, Jeremiah Warder, Henry Remsen, jun, Robert Gilbert Livingston, and Buckridge Sims, and to be sold by me." "Samuel Tucker, Sheriff" The widow of above Daniel Robins was by Sept. 14, 1764 Frances Robins Pierce. There has been a lot of confusion over the identity of Daniel Robins & Frances his widow. Charles Robbins Hutchinson wrote the above Daniel Robins was 2-Daniel & Frances Robins, the administrator of Daniel's estate was his son. The original documentation shows this to be incorrect. Document on Feb. 21, 1763 refers to Frances as the widow of Daniel Robins. "On Sept 14, 1764. Personally appeared before Joseph Reed Surogate, Frances Pierce late Frances Robins, adm'r of Daniel Robins deces, & being one of the People called Quakers". We posted these documents some time ago but I will re-post for the benefit of newer members. Does anyone have some thoughts on Daniel of "Robins' Hill" or new information on this Daniel being 2, 3 or maybe 4? From: John W Taylor To: Robbinsfamilysouthjersey@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, June 27, 2006 7:33 AM Subject: [Robbinsfamilysouthjersey] 2-Daniel, Frances etc. Food For Thought: Fact 1 - 1731 2-Daniel & wife Mary per Chesterfield MM records rocf Wrightstown MM, Bucks Co., PA [cannot be 3-Daniel as Mary is named] Fact 2 - 1748 3- Daniel & wife Elizabeth, per Monmouth deed A-3 pg 42, sold their 152 1/2 acre farm in Upper Freehold [nothing further known of them in Monmouth Co.] Fact 3 - 1756 Job's, believed to be son of 2-Daniel, will names his mother Mary Fact 5 - 1763 A Daniel's will or inventory names wife Frances who later wed John Pierce Fact 6- 1772 Daniel, son of John & grandson of 2-Daniel, & wife Ann sold their Amwell 155 acres. My thoughts: 2-Daniel was alive in 1731 at age 65. (also the 1733 news article says he was alive then) Job's 1756 will, if son of 2-Daniel, says that 2-Daniel died before 1756 and that Mary was alive and likely around 90 years old. Daniel, son of John was wed to Ann and could not have been the Daniel that wed Frances named in 1763 No other Daniel is known to have been in Amwell at the time Frances was named in 1763. This leaves 3-Daniel that could have wed Frances and died in 1763; assuming that his wife Elizabeth had died. Could it be that 2-Daniel died around 1748 (age 82) and 3-Daniel sold his Upper Freehold farm and moved to Amwell twp, Hunterdon Co. to be with his mother Mary. While there, 3-Daniel's wife Elizabeth died and he wed Frances and died himself in 1763 at age 71 (was born in 1692 per Woodbridge Vital Records) John Taylor From: John W Taylor To: Robbinsfamilysouthjersey@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, June 27, 2006 11:38 AM Subject: Re: [Robbinsfamilysouthjersey] 2-Daniel, Frances etc. Further Thoughts: Per Hutchinson Papers, 3-Daniel had son 4-Daniel who would have been born around 1720. It is quite possible that he is the Daniel that was wed to Frances and died in 1763 in Amwell twp. After Daniel's death, Frances wed John Pierce per the estate papers. John Pierse/Pierce is shown on Hammond Map GB4. His property was about 5 miles southeast of Flemington near Cloverhill and near the Somerset County line. A number of the Robins deeds in Amwell twp are in this area near the Old York Road and Vorhees Corner. 1d. Re: Fayette Co. PA "Back In Olden Times" Posted by: "marcelofamilytx" tmarcelo@austin.rr.com marcelofamilytx Date: Sat Jul 25, 2009 12:58 pm ((PDT)) I agree with the earlier point re: "How do we know that the Daniel that died c1763 was Daniel Jr. (age 97) vs. Daniel III (age about 69) or possibly even a Daniel IV (possible age 30-40? The remarriage of Frances argues for a younger man." Another thing that "argues for a younger man"...The description of the house in the newspaper article about the sale. It said "the Mansion-house large, and almost new..." I would expect a new house of a younger man not necessarily an older one. Plus, the fact that he died intestate could also indicate that he was possibly a younger man who didn't expect to die and who possibly hadn't yet had children. Actually, after reviewing the Kingwood Monthly Meeting records, I wondered if it was possible that the Daniel with the widow Frances, might in fact be the Daniel who was son of Job Robins (d. 1756). Job was a Quaker; and the Daniel who died around 1763 was also a Quaker. The Daniel in the Kingwood MM marriage records (with no bride named) in 1758 was also a Quaker. While I don't know who this Daniel's parents were, the fact that there are only two other Robins in the Kingwood records, namely Job Robins (in a 1752 record) and Andrew (in a 1768 record), it makes me suspect that they are the same as Job who died 1756 and his two sons, Daniel and Andrew. In addition the "Fellowbondsman" of the Daniel who d. 1763 was Thomas Atkinson; that name also shows up in the Kingwood MM records, as does John Emley, the name of one of the inventory takers of the estate of Daniel who d. 1763. Do we know when Daniel, the eldest son of Job, died? Was that Daniel living past 1763? Tracey 1e. Re: 2-Daniel & 3-Daniel Posted by: "Sara Hoffman" july37@cox.net turkeypt2 Date: Sat Jul 25, 2009 6:46 pm ((PDT)) Re: 2-Daniel & 3-Daniel. Charles Robbins Huchinson wrote he believed Job Robins was a son of 2-Daniel. I agree with Mr. Hutchinson that Job was most likely a son of 2-Daniel but no direct proof. Job's will was dated Jan 19, 1756, proved May 17, 1756 in Amwell, Hunterdon Co., NJ. Job's will names his mother Mary. If Job was the son of 2-Daniel & his 2nd wife Mary as assumed, then Mary was the widow of 2-Daniel, living with her son in 1756. From New Haven CT Vital Records, 2-Daniel was born Nov. 27, 1666 & he was living on July 30, 1733 in Hunterdon Co, making him age 66 when the newspaper article was published about Daniel & his family. He would have been 96 if he died in or around Feb.1763. This leaves the other Daniel of Amwell, Hunterdon Co. with wife Frances. We know 3-Daniel had a wife named Elizabeth from a deed that gives her name. In 1748, Daniel & Elizabeth sold their property in Upper Freehold & moved to Amwell Township, Hunterdon Co. The Daniel who died in 1763 had a sizable estate valued at 1,099.19.6 pounds. If the man who died in 1763 was 3-Daniel the Woodbridge Vital records confirms his birthdate as Oct. 5, 1692. This makes him 70 years of age by Feb 21, 1763 when his inventory was taken. I agree the Daniel who died in 1763 probably was younger than age 96. How much younger? Maybe there was another Daniel. There are all types of possibilities. This is an interesting topic to examine but without the infusion of some new facts, all we have is circumstantial evidence. 3a. Hunterdon County was formed in 1714 from Burlington County, Morris County was formed from Hunterdon in 1739, Sussex County was formed from Morris in 1753. All of this territory was part of Burlington County prior to 1714. The "Allentown Messenger" of 2/15/1990 talks about 2-DANIEL. It says he joined the Friends and in 1727 he moved to Bucks County, PA for four years where he was a member of the Buckingham meeting. On 3/6/1731 he and his wife joined the Wrightstown MM. In 1736 they moved back to New Jersey to Amwell. (was this 2-DANIEL as the article says or his son Daniel? 2-DANIEL was 61 in 1727). From: Gary Robins [gdrobins@robinsgenealogy.net] Sent: Wednesday, December 07, 2005 2:55 PM I'm not sure how to interpret all that. The post below indicates that Daniel joined the Wrightstown PA Monthly Meeting circa, 1731. It was my understanding that Daniel Jr went to Bucks County in 1727, (as stated). Yes there is a Wrightstown PA, However it is also my understanding that Daniel Jr returned to NJ circa 1731. If he joined a Wrightstown Meeting about that time, I would imagine it was in the one in NJ, which is about 12 miles from the "Crosswicks" farm of Daniel Robins Sr. Schools have existed there since c.1721. These early schools were organized by a Board of Trustees and parents paid a tuition for their children to attend. Often the Quaker Meeting would pay for those children whose parents were not able to afford the necessary fees. However it is also my understanding that Daniel Jr became associated with the Chesterfield MM. Later that same year, we have this in the Chesterfield MM records. "In October 1731, Friends at Bethlehem, near Belvidere, set up a brand of the Chesterfield Meeting with Charles Wolverton and Daniel Robins as overseers appointed at Chesterfield and reporting there." He is supposed to have moved to Amwell sometime after those meetings were discontinued, circa 1736. This appears to be Daniel III & this is the land 2-Daniel conveyed to him in 1723. Where did Daniel III go after he sells the Monmouth Co property in 1748, Amwell in Hunterdon, another county or another state? The will of Job Robins (55.25) 1/19/1756 names his mother Mary. Job's inventory was 467.15.2 pounds, a nice sum. Daniel (55.25, child i) of Amwell's 1763 inventory was very large at 1,099.19.6.pounds. There's no Robins involved with this inventory or as a witness. An observation: Isaac Robins' (55.31) inventory in 1741 was 46.15.2 pounds. A small sum compared to Daniel & Job. A thought: Did Daniel III (82., child i) have any children? If he did how do we link them to him? John Taylor's outline taken from Hutchinson shows children. What was Hutchinson's source? Ephraim's birth year 1717 seems a little early for him to have been a 1-Daniel great-grandson. The names of the other grandsons of 1-Daniel are known from the following sources. Joseph Robins, Sr. names his sons in his will & an unborn child. Richard Robins, Sr. names his sons in his will & an unborn child. Nathaniel Robins, no sons, his daughters named in 1-Daniel's will. Moses Robins, Sr. his sons named in the Bible of Elijah Robins. Aaron Robins, Sr. names his sons in his will. Aaron had a son Ephraim Robins, Sr. b. abt. 1708 & d. 1759 & a grandson Ephraim Robins, Jr. b. abt. 1758. There doesn't appear to be a place for the Ephraim b. 1717 to fit into Aaron's line. Offering a contrary view I'd point out this statement from 2-Daniel 1733 bio: "He is the father of thirteen children, eleven of which are married and by them he hath had sixty two grand-children, born in less than eighteen years time," I would interpret this to indicate 2-Daniel had at least one 17 year old grandchild born around 1716.
