He married Mary Parthenia Clevenger, daughter of Aaron Clevenger and Parthenia Rachel Truax, at Belfast Twp., Bedford Co., PA, on 29 Jun 1819. James died on 15 Mar 1869 at Belfast Twp., Fulton Co., PA, at age 71 (in (MOF) date of death given as 11 Dec 1869). His body was interred at Sideling Hill Baptist, Fulton Co., PA. James was known as "Miller Jim" and lived on the old Lake place along Licking Creek near Needmore. At one time he lived on a mill property on Licking Creek. He is also shown as living on Pleasant Ridge Road. It is believed that James was a Baptist minister. The (FCD) lists James as a miller and residing at Webster Mills. The Webster Mills Post Office was located in Ayr Twp., 6 miles south of McConnellsburg. It had a school house, an excellent grist mill, a first-class store, a blacksmith shop, and a wagon maker shop. A number of comfortable homes and highly cultivated farms were in its immediate vicinity. The (PIA) has the following information in its Warrant Registers: Number of Warrant - 327; Name of Warrantee - James and Jacob Lake; Description of Warrant - Survey; Quantity - 40; Warrant Location - Belfast Township; Date of Warrant - 29 Jan 1833; Date of Return - 28 Oct 1864; Acres Returned - 40; Name of Patentee - Jacob Lake; Where Recorded - Volume H, No. 58, Page 598; Where Survey is Copied - Book C127, Page 37. Living with James and Parthenia Lake in 1850(60) was Rebecca Clevenger born 1759. Also shown in the family papers was an individual identified as William Madison Lake (?). Census 1820 shows James as living in Belfast Twp. He and his father, John H., followed one another on the enumeration sheet so they lived near one another. One member of the family was employed in agriculture. The family breakdown of free white males: under 10 was 1; 26 - 45 was 1; free white females: 16 - 26 was 1. Census 1850 shows James still living in Belfast Twp. His birthplace is shown as New Jersey and his wife and children were born in PA. His age was 50. His occupation was farmer and he owned real estate valued at $2800.00. Living with him at that time were: James Lake 21, laborer [1829]; Anne Lake 20, [1830]; Parthenia Lake 18, [1832]; Daniel Lake 13, [1837]; Elizabeth Lake 12, [1838]; Zadiah Lake 8, [1842]; Mary Lake 4, [1846]; Abner Sipe 14, [1836]; William Sipe 10, [1840]. All of the children who were of school age were shown as having attended school during that year. The enumeration sheet also shows James as living near his brother Ephriam and Samuel, probably his son. They were listed in sequence by dwelling and family number. Census 1850 had an agricultural schedule. James had a farm in Belfast Twp. Acres of land improved 175 - unimproved - 375; cash value of farm $2800.00; value of farm machinery $120.00; horses 5; milk cows 3; other cattle 5; sheep 30; swine 13; value of livestock $ 400.00; wheat 160 bu; rye 100 bu; indian corn 20 bu; oats 110 bu; wool 75 lbs; irish potatoes 40 bu; buckwheat 5 bu; butter 150 lbs; hay 8 tons; flax 50 lbs; flaxseed 2 bu; value of home made manufacturing $45.00; value of animals slaughtered $40.00. Census 1860 lists James as living in Belfast Twp., occupation farmer, value of real estate $1500, value of personal property $680, born in NJ. Living with him were his wife Mary 59 [1801]; Elizabeth 21 [1839] domestic; Isadiah 19 [1841]; Mary 14 [1846]; William Madison 16 [1844] laborer; Rachel Clivinger (sic) 91 [1769]. The agricultural schedule of 1860 lists James farm in Belfast Twp., Post Office of Speersville. (Speersville has also been listed as Enid.)
