From a newspaper (probably the Express Times) in Easton, Pennsylvania dated February 3, 1892: BEGIN Peter Snyder, a well-known resident of Portland, died yesterday of heart disease at his home in that place, aged 73 years. He had been in ill health for some time. Deceased is survived by a widow and several children, one of whom, Clark Snyder, is a deputy sheriff of Warren County, N.J. END Shirley Lillian Martindale (0.704) , 14 Apr 2004: BEGIN Peter Snider/Snyder was born in Warren Co. NJ abt. 1818. He died 2 Feb 1892 in Portland PA (which is in Northampton Co.). He lived in Warren Co. NJ all his life until after the 1885 state census. ... ... I have the obituary which was in 3 newspapers-2 in PA and Warren Co. NJ paper. The obit does not give his parents names but does mention his son Clark (my gr gr grandfather) as sherrif of Warren Co. NJ. Their daughter Sarah Catherine Snyder married Edmond Kishpaugh 18 Oct. 1887 (she had a daughter from her 1st marriage to a Simpson whom, I believe may have died in the Civil War). Their daughter Caroline Snyder born 13 April 1844 married Jesse Kinney. Jesse Kinney was killed in the Civil War; and Caroline died young. They had a son Frank born 1879 who went to live with Anderson Snyder & Peter and Harriet Snyder in Portland (fr. 1890 census). Peter and Harriet's son John N. Snyder born Sept. 1847 died 19 Oct. 1851 and is buried Old Frame Cemetery. Their daughter Sarah Margaret Snyder was born about 1849; I was told she married a Zeller. Their daughter Emma Snyder born 26 May 1850 died 13 October 1851 and is buried Old Frame Cemetery. (I have a picture of these graves from a trip I took there in 1999). Peter A. Snyder listed in the IGI as son of Peter Snyder was NOT on the 1860 census, so I assume he either did NOT belong to Peter and Harriet or he died. Ira Anderson Snyder born 1856 is listed as Ira in 1860 and 1870 and then in the 1890 census, he uses his middle name. I can find no other data about him. I find a possible marriage for him to Lydia Rupp. He is not in Portland PA in 1900 census. Clark Wilbur Snyder (son of Peter and Harriet E.) is my gr gr grandfather. He was born 21 Dec. 1859 and he died 23 July 1892. He married Lillie Weller (daughter of Michael Weller and Sarah Alice Shannon). Clark Snyder was sherriff of Warren Co. NJ and he died the same year as his father. He drank from a well while on rounds as sheriff, and it was contaminated. He contracted typhoid and died. His son Lewis Snyder and wife Lillie also contracted typhoid from him. Lewis died; Lillie survived as did their other son Lester Weller Snyder then age 4-my grandfather who did not contract the disease. Lillie lived to 1951 and I knew her. She outlived 4 husbands! She was quite a gal. Laura Jane Snyder was born 22 March 1862 (dau of Peter and Harriet E. and she originally was spelled Lora Jane). She married George H, Kishpaugh 2 April 1890. They had no children. Peter and Harriet had one other son, Edmon March 1871 who died a few months later in July. I have that death record. Peter Snyder is listed as Peter Snyder Jr. in the census data. There IS a Peter Snyder Sr. on the census also in Warren Co. NJ Knowlton thru the 1860 census. His wife is Leah and from the census data he was born 1800/01 (I think this is a christening date and Leah was born 1804/5). This would make her only 14 in 1818 when my Peter Snyder was born! A little young! He could have had a first wife who died. Or he had a VERY young wife. I find NO MARRIAGE record for a Peter Snyder and Leah in NJ or PA. Peter Snyder Sr. died in 1871, 8 March and is buried with his wife in Old Frame cemetery in Knowlton NJ. I got these records from the Knowlton Presbyterian Church (from the church Secretary) when I was there. Peter Snyder Sr.'s father was Henry Snyder and Charlotte King (Sharlotta in Knowlton records). I think Charlotte MAY have had a first husband who died. She die in the 1840's as did Henry Snyder-1841 for Henry. I have the data; I just can't prove any of it! I have a death recrod for Peter Snyder SR. showing Henry and Charlotte as his parents. This is because he died in NJ where they kept good records. 4 churches met at Knowlton Presby. church for protection from the indians acc. to the church sec. (and also a history book I read)- 3 from PA and 1 from NJ. Plainfield from PA; Easton Church from PA; Dryland Church from PA and Knowlton Presbyterian Church from NJ. They intermarried as a result of this; yet records stop at 1816- 2 years before Peter is born...where did they go? Back to their own churches & they built a few new ones. SO, I have NO BIRTH or death record for PETER Snyder 1818-2 Feb. 1892 to PROVE the relationships that the census data suggest. Since Peter and Harriet bury their 2 children in Knowlton Frame Cem. (across the street from Knowlton Presbyterian church) this is more reason to assume the above relationships to be correct. Peter Sr. is buried there also. Knowlton Church records note Peter and Harriet's stone unfound- the cemetery had been vandalized and was restored by the church. This is the result of 10 years of research. Peter and Harriet Elizabeth Raub Snyder were married 18 Nov. 1843 by Rev Edward Barass- I have that record also. No mention of parents. William is called William Robe and William Robeson in one of those land docs-the one giving Elizabeth Shackleton land from her father's will. She sells this land to her brother. In case William is the William Raub who purchased land in MI; I traced that. There IS a William Raub in MI in 1840. Not in 1850. 4 William Raubs are on microfiche as having left MI by 1850- 2 go to PA Williams Twp; 1 to NY and 1 to KY. There are 4 William Raubs in the 1840 census-2 in PA, 1 in MI and one in NY and they are all about the same age! I DID pick up a William Raub in the 1880 census as I noted; then looked at the 1870 census and found him there too- a widower. He lived in Tustin, Sullivan, NY which I assume is Tustin Twp, Sullivan Co. Then I have to consider all of the mis-spellings of Raub and also the possibility that he was a William ______ Raub who MAY have used his middle name on records. Elizabeth Shackleton's death date given in the Shackleton book, I believe is wrong, because it's the same death date as an Elizabeth who was married to someone else- that marriage took place in 1810-1 year BEFORE William Raub married Elizabeth Shackleton. There were seven William Raubs who served in the Rev. War, War of 1812. I think the one who bought land in MI was a George William Raub. He had lived in NJ, Greenwich Co. and also in PA. I bought a land records book from PA and one from NJ. George William Raub leaves land to Michael Raub and to William Raub. How are they related? He married an Elizabeth Saylor (which COULD be Baylor or Zeller). Record keepers wrote names as they sounded-they were often Irish who did not read or write in german. Therefore there were many many mis-spellings. Then there were the names that were shortened, etc. END
