Thompson, A Woman For All Seasons" with the permission of the author Rev Donald C. Thompson. Rev. Thompson writes, "Lila W. Thompson was born Lila Worrell Robbins, March 9, 1875 and died April 3, 1933. In 1923 she was the first woman elected to the New Jersey state legislature from a county (Ocean) where there was only one representative. She chaired and served on several committees in the General Assembly 1924-25, with her foci on building much needed paved roads, patriotic expressions, providing World War I veterans' pensions and services for all people in need. Lila achieved many firsts. In her last eight years, she gave herself completely to the needs of all people as the Great Depression struck South Jersey. Returning home from New Egypt one night, completely exhausted from her efforts as the first Director of the Ocean County Old Age Pension Releif Bureau (Welfare Department) she apparently fell asleep at the wheel, and died in a tragic auto crash. Her funeral was the largest in Ocean County up to that time, showing the people's gratitude for Lila." Lila Worrell Robbins Thompson was a descendant of 10-Aaron, her line was posted in the message on Johnson & Elmina Davis Robbins, Lila's grandparents. Located on US Route 9 at Adelphia Road in NJ is an official state monument and marker that reads LILA W. THOMPSON HIGHWAY. It was through Lila's efforts that this road was constructed in 1934. About the author of the book Donald C. Thompson. He was born in Trenton, NJ and grew up in Ocean County, NJ. His education includes B.A., Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA; M.Div., Drew University, Madison, NJ; Ed.D., UCLA, Los Angeles; and Ph.D, Pacific Western University, Los Angeles. He is a retired United Methodist minister, university professor, public speaker, author, counselor and social activist. Don lives with his wife Jane, in Bradenton, Florida, where they direct TRANSITIONS SUPPORT GROUP helping persons through traumatic life changes. I believe Don's grandmother would be proud of him. If anyone is interested in a copy of this book, Rev. Thompson can be contacted at janedonjuan@juno.com.for details. Among some of the book's endorsements, is one by Pauline S. Miller, Official Ocean County Historian, Toms River, NJ. Personally, I was highly impressed with this book, the family history & life of Lila W. Thompson. As far as it is known, Lila is the only stateswoman on our Robbins family tree. Sara END
