From Jeanette Schoonover May 2005 BEGIN Philip was born on October 8, 1825 in Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey. He is the son of James Schoonover and Catharine Van Horn. Philip and Elizabeth were married on January 27, 1849 according to the Sussex Register. Philip and Elizabeth lived first in Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey and later Stillwater, Sussex County. They returned to Hardwick, but are buried in the Harmony Hill Methodist Church Yard (also called Stillwater Methodist Church Cemetery). Their dates of death are: Philip - 4 Mar 1876 and Elizabeth 1887. Their tombstones are located just inside the gate and about 15 yards slightly to the right. Philip and Elizabeth bought and sold several properties in both Warren and Sussex Counties. 12 Apr 1853 - Commissioners sold at auction land of Ira Roy. Sale took place at house of Lydia Roy. PHILIP SCHOONOVER AND CHARLES ROY highest bidders, $3,081.75 for 86 81/100 acres. 6 Apr 1854 - PHILIP & ELIZABETH SCHOONOVER quit claim to Charles N. Roy their interest in the 86 81/100 acres (same land description as above transaction) for $316.50. 8 Apr 1854 - PHILIP SCHOONOVER purchased from Joel & Martha Ingersolle 80 acres for $2,800 in Stillwater, Sussex Co. Land bounded properties of John Locey, Joseph Huff, John Lundisions???, and was formerly lands owned by Aaron C. Schooley. If you have a copy of the Beers Atlas of 1860, you can find this property. It's located just below the second large "L" in the bold printed name Stillwater. Philip's brother and sister (Joseph & Elizabeth Drake) are farming just north and slightly to the right on this map. 20 Mar 1855 - PHILIP SCHOONOVER purchased from Martin Fritz, 24 acres in Stillwater for $725. Land was formerly owned by Nathan & Peter Shafer. 13 Sept 1861 PHILIP SCHOONOVER purchased the original Schoonover Farm from brother Joseph. (Joseph by now had bought his sister (Elizabeth) and brother-in-law's (Wm. C. Drake) interest just before William died in 1861. This was 110 acres in Stillwater for price of $2,817.01. This land was previously owned by their father, James, grandfather Joseph M. and was 1/2 of the original farm owned by their great grandfather Henry who died in 1804. 4 Apr 1862 PHILIP SCHOONOVER sold the 110 acres Schoonover Farm to Abraham Van Horn (probably his mother's brother) for $3,000.
