    Catherine Hess, the daughter of Jacob Hess and Mary (Daniels) Hess,
    was born circa, 1819, in Belfast Twp., Bedford Co., Pennsylvania. She
    married Nathaniel Mellott, son of John and Elizabeth Mellott, circa
    1843, in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Nathaniel died, 6 August 1855,
    in Fulton Co. Pennsylvania. We see from the 1850 U.S. Census that this
    family resided in Belfast Twp., and that Nathaniel occupation was list
    as a Farmer.

Note:

    George W.A. Mellott wore a beard when they were rather rare.
    He was a believer in the inerrant word of the Holy Scriptures. His
    young wife had been kept home to help raise her brothers and
    sisters. As she had not had a chance to learn to read George taught
    her to read from the King James Version of the Bible. She composed
    the following poem in memoriam when George died on 12 Apr 1923.
    My loss is great indeed but God knows best
    and I know that my loss is His gain,
    but I have the promise that I can go to him,
    then there will be no more parting and no more tears
    But Oh my home is sad and lonely
    for I hear his voice and prayers no more,
    but peaceful be the silent slumber,
    peaceful in a grave so low.
    All his earthly trials are over
    oh how well his part he bore.
    In his lonely grave he sleepeth
    Ne'er to wake on mortal shore.
    But how I sadly miss him
    as he's laid from me away,
    but I hope in Heaven to meet him,
    at the close of one bright day.
    When the sorrows on life's journey
    with their crushing weight appear,
    Oh my heart cries out in anguish
    for the loved beyond recall.
    George W.A. Melllott added the middle initial A. to
    distinguish his mail from that of other other George Mellotts.

    In an era when there were no radios yet in Whips Cove George figured a
    way to do a form of broadcasting religious songs via the telephone party
    line. One Sunday he announced in the Jerusalem Christian Church that at
    two oclock this afternoon he would be sending some good Christian music
    over the telephone for those who wished to listen. He just removed the
    receiver from his hand cranked wall telephone and pointed the large horn
    of his Victrola toward the telephone mouth piece. It was heard by several
    local telephone customers and Eugene Plessinger was a young lad living
    nearby came down to George's house to observe the setup. This was not used
    many Sundays as it tied up the telephone line for possible emergency uses.

    George when he first got his victrola acquired several records with
    it. One was a Foxtrot tune with a beat suitable for dancing. One Summer
    season Jonathan Cope from Chester County, Pa. came to visit George along
    with Darlie Hart from Camden, New Jersey. Jonathan said "By Golly George
    I believe that is a good Foxtrot number. I used to dance to such music
    when I was younger." That was all that was needed to convince George that
    this old single sided 78 RPM recording had to go. He walked across the
    mountain to the store where he had bought it and exchanged it for another.
