Bridgeton, NJ, Dec. 24, 1897 The Jersey Oyster War "As an outcome of the troubles between riparian oyster ground claimants, Capt. Oliver Gandy of Newport was held in $1000.00 bail yesterday. Capt. Richard Robbins tonged on the grounds claimed by Gandy in the Delaware Bay, and Gandy fired four shots into his sloop, sinking it. Other boats rescued Robbins. Gandy is also charged with having put dynamite in a fort on the beach. The oystermen are excited. Gandy has had Robbins arrested on a charge of stealing oysters." Capt. Richard Lore Robbins was the son of David & Deborah Lore Robbins. He was born at Newport, NJ in 1851 & died there in 1910.
