Pascal (1997) edited for corrections 29 Sep 2006 & 30 Sep 2006 JOHANNES SCHNUCH married JULIANA KLEE/KLIE 20 Feb 1733, and listed among their children are: JOHANNES (JOHN) bpt 1735 recorded in Nordhofen Churchbook (Palatine), CASPARUS bpt 1740 as recorded in Rhinebeck Flats Ref. Churchbook, NY, JOHANN WILHELM, bpt 1742, JOHANN PETER, bpt 1744 and JOHANN MARTIN bpt. 1746, recorded in the Redhook Lutheran Churchbook, NY located about 65 miles NNE of NJ. They all seem to fit the names of those SNOOKs found circa 1760 in Sussex Co., NJ. In addition, a PETER SNOOK is listed as one of the executors of Casper's will. Peter Snook who married Maria Goss, named one of his sons Casper. It is my belief that this Peter is Casper's brother. I also believe that these are the same SNOOKs residing in the Sussex County, NJ area as early as 1760. One other note, Casper was one of the witnessed of the will of John Kanoff. Juliana Klee was the widow of a Johannes Kanoff . The conclusion could be drawn that John Kanoff and Casper Snook were half brothers. ("More Palatine Families" by Henry Jones, Jr.) CASPER SNOOK born about 1740, died in Dec of 1817. His wife was ELIZABETH (KLECKNER) born about ____ in __________ , died circa 1823, daughter of Peter KLECKNER and wife (unk). It is believed that Casper settled in Sussex Co., NJ about 1765, but the first known record is a land purchase in Lafayette Township documented 30 Dec 1800. Here he purchased 198.94 Acres of land from its absentee English owners. (Sussex County Deeds, E-278). He likely had been living on this land for many years as a tenant before he obtained title. At Casper's death he did leave a will recorded in Sussex County Wills, A-452. In it he left all his possessions to his "dear wife" Elizabeth to have the use of during her natural life. After her death his son Matthis was bequeathed the farm where Casper lived with the stipulation he pay his brothers and sisters equal portions of the farms worth. Matthis would have been the oldest son. He was instructed to hold out a sum on one thousand dollars for the care of RODEY, one of Casper's daughters who was apparently incompetent or an invalid. In 1823 Matthias deeded over his share of the farm in Lafayette to his brother, William C. This is the basis for Elizabeth's death being in 1823. SNOOK was born in Feb 1776 in Green Township, Sussex Co., New Jersey. He married 12 May 1799, MARY CUMMINS, born 1781 also in Sussex Co., the daughter of JACOB CUMMINS, who was the son of CHRISTIAN & CATHERINE CUMMINS, Huguenots from Germany. On page 428 of Snell's book there is an extended account of William C. Snook and his relationship with Jacob Cummins of Green Twp. In a series of deeds William purchases shares of the Jacob Cummins farm from some of Jacob's heirs. In earliest land transaction records, William was known as William of Hardwick, but there were many families of Snooks in the area and at least one other William Snook (of Frankford) whose wife was also named Mary (Lantz). In subsequent deeds he identifies himself as William Snook, son of Casper Snook. It is probable that he eventually dropped that title for a less cumbersome one, William C. Snook. In 1823 he bought his father's farm from his brother Mathis Snook. Shortly before his death William bought a large farm in what is now Hampton Township. Mary (Cummins) Snook died 01 Mar 1852 and William Snook died 14 Dec 1854. Both are buried in Vaughn Cemetery, located in Lafayette Township, Sussex Co., NJ .
