END The Hunterdon Gazette Flemington, Hunterdon Co, NJ 30 Aug 1865 BEGIN SINGULAR TRIAL- Last Friday, before Justice Staats, in this village, we attended the preliminary hearing, in the case of Moses Lake, who, together with his family, was taken with a warrant, issued at the instance of one Prime, a school teacher, who asserts that he was robbed of fifty odd dollars in Moses' house, and that he believed said Moses, or some of his family, had it. The lawyers for the defense proved to be not idle in their duties, and as the plaintiff Prime, pleaded his own case, he had a sea of rough waves to travel over. He was placed upon the stand, sworn, and gave, to all appearances a correct statement of the loss. He told as how he went to bed, left his pants on the foot thereof; got up in the morning, found he was minus a lot of money; thought Moses stole it. Witnesses were then sworn, and proved conclusively that Prime had no money, if his own assertions were worth credence. Then again it was proven beyond dispute that he had made contradictory statements with regard to the character, or description of the money stolen. In fact at the conclusion of his statement he was unwilling to affix to it his signature. Thus ended this singular affair, and Mr. Lake and his household, went on their way rejoicing, knowing full well that it would take something more than mere assertions of even this "Prime" man to make the public believe that they were dishonest. END "History of Hunterdon and Somerset Counties New Jersey", James P. Snell, 1881 BEGIN The Summit District (90) is not very ancient, having been formed so late as 1853. The first house was erected in 1850, and stood near the site of the one now in use, which was erected in 1872. The first school-house was 20 by 22 feet; the present one, a frame, is 26 by 30. Its location is two miles from Flemington. Clara Bonham taught in 1876, at which date Moses Lake, Jeremiah Everitt, and Samuel F. Case were trustees. END
