BEGIN John Andrew Brokaw Birth: Jul. 4, 1804 Raritan Somerset County New Jersey, USA Death: Jan. 17, 1893 Mount Liberty Knox County Ohio, USA John Andrew Brokaw was born Jul 4, 1804 in Raritan, Somerset County, New Jersey, baptized Aug 26, 1804 in the Raritan Dutch Church, and died Jan 17, 1893 at Mt. Liberty, Knox County, Ohio at the age of 88. He married Hannah Caroline Bush on Oct 27, 1827 in Somerset County, New Jersey. She was born Jun 20, 1809, and died May 8, 1885 at the age of 75. She was the daughter of Abraham Bush and Sarah (Sally) Prall. John Andrew Brokaw was raised on the farm until the age of 17, at which time he learned the shoemaker trade and became self-employed. He moved to Ohio with his parents two years later (ca. 1823). After 18 months in Ohio, he moved back to New Jersey (ca. 1825). After a year, he returned to Ohio. Shortly after his father died in 1826, he again moved back to New Jersey, this time with his mother and five of his brothers and sisters, leaving sister Jane, and brothers Caleb and Abraham in Ohio. The 1830 census for Bedminster Township, Somerset County, New Jersey (Roll 83, page 80) lists the John A. Brokaw family as follows: 1 male 20-30 (John Andrew, 26); 1 female under 5 (Sarah Van Nest, 1); 1 female 20-30 (Hannah Caroline Bush, 21); and 1 free colored female under 10. The young couple and their two children moved back to Ohio in the spring of 1831. They stayed one year in Jefferson County, and records show them living in Morris Township, Knox County; Liberty Township, Bloomfield Township, and Chester Township (now Morrow County), where they remained until 1876. Counties were divided up in forming new counties at the time, so they may have been living in one place. The 1850 census of South Bloomfield Township, Morrow County, Ohio (Roll 716, page 524 typed, page 1051 in pencil, dwelling 2470, family 2510) listed the family as follows: John Brokaw, 45, farmer, value of real estate owned 500, born in NJ; Caroline, 40, born in NJ; Maria S., 19, born in NJ; (all the remaining children were born in Ohio): Effa, 17; Elizabeth, 15; Phebe A., 12; Caroline, 9; Mary, 7; Andrew J., 5; William, 3; and Abram, 7/12. The 1860 census of Chesterville P.O., South Bloomfield Township, Morrow County, Ohio (Roll 1017, page 22 typed, page 42 in pen, line 29, dwelling 337, family 336) lists the family as follows: John Brokaw, 56, farmer, value of real estate 879, value of personal estate 380, born in NJ; Caroline, 50, born in NJ; and the children, all born in Ohio: Caroline, 19, domestic; Mary, 17, domestic; Andrew J., 15, domestic; William, 12; Gabriel, 10; and John, 8. All the children were in school. The 1880 census for Mt. Gilead (Columbus Street), Liberty Township, Knox County, Ohio (e.d. 137, page 26 in pen, line 24-25, dwelling 193, family 198) lists the family as Jno A. Brokaw, 75, farming 12 months the previous year, born in Va, both parents born in Va; Caroline, 71, born in NJ, both parents born in NJ; and Jno B., 27, selling farm utensils, born in O, both parents born in NJ. Hill wrote in 1881, "He followed farming and shoemaking, by which he gained a competence for his old age. Mr. and Mrs. Brokaw started poor in life. When they arrived in Knox County, he had a horse and wagon, with a few household effects and three dollars twelve and one-half cents in cash. They had thirteen children, all of whom did well, thus showing that they were carefully and judicially trained. . . ." He was buried in Bird Cemetery, Liberty Township, Knox County, Ohio. His death record was dated Feb 19, 1893. Bird Cemetery is located south of Mt. Vernon, Knox County, Ohio on the north side of State Route 36, Columbus Road, exactly one mile west of the west edge of Bangs, Ohio. The day of his death on his tombstone doesn't appear to match other records, nor does his age shown compute with other records.
