A small marker on the home acknowledges the Hagaman family. Lewis served as a carpenter's apprentice to Mr. Charles Wilson. He did not follow his trade. Lewis Hagaman married Sarah E. Mathews on Jan.9, 1850. They had two sons. Their first child died at the age of one month. Lorenzo Dow Hagaman was their second son. In 1857, Lewis Hagaman purchased a plantation in Raritan Twp., NJ. The farm extended on the east side of the road from Ringoes to Buchannan's Hill. Seventeen years after the death of his first wife, Lewis Hagaman married Belle Smith on April 17, 1876. She was the daughter of Willaim Smith of Asbury, NJ. In the spring of 1884 he sold his estate and moved to Frenchtown, NJ. BEGIN Lorenzo Dow Hagaman Birth: Dec. 6, 1857 Frenchtown Hunterdon County New Jersey, USA Death: 1924 Frenchtown Hunterdon County New Jersey, USA MAYOR OF FRENCHTOWN-ATTORNEY AT LAW When Lorenzo Dow Hagaman was two years old, his mother passed away at the family plantation in Raritan Twp., NJ. It was decided that he would be raised by his grandparents Joseph and Nancy Burroughs Matthews in Mt. Airy, NJ. His grandmother died when he was twelve and he continued to be raised by his grandfather. Lorenzo was trained for a professional career. He attended the Conference Academy Seminary (The Pennington School) in Pennington, NJ and graduated from the Amwell Academy Seminary in Ringoes, NJ on June 18, 1875. He studied under Dr. C. W. Larison, the noted Hunterdon County physician and genealogist. Dr. Larison authored the Fisher Family Chronicles which included several chapters on the Hagaman Family. Lorenzo studied law under John Taylor Bird, a two term United States Congressman and NJ Vice-Chancellor in Taylor's law offices in Flemington, NJ. Lorenzo became licensed as an attorney during the February term of the N.J. Supreme Court in February 1882. In March of 1882, he began practicing law in Frenchtown, NJ. He later formed a partnership with Harry Jenkins Able, Esq. (Hagaman & Able, Attorneys at Law). Their law office was located at 43 Bridge Street in Frenchtown, NJ. Lorenzo D. Hagaman was a popular and successful attorney in Hunterdon County. Lorenzo married Miss Carrie Rockafellar on June 14, 1888. Carrie (Rockefellar) Hagaman was the daughter of Samuel R. and Zeruah (Duckworth) Rockefellar. She was a cousin of industrialist John D. Rockefeller. In addition to his legal business, Lorenzo D. Hagaman was the local agent for three insurance companies; Continental, German-American, and New York Insurance. Politically, he was a Democrat. He was the clerk for Frenchtown, NJ from 1883-1886. He served on the borough council from 1886-1889. He was the Mayor of Frenchtown from 1889-1891. He was also the borough attorney as well as the lawyer for the United National Bank in Frenchtown. Lorenzo Hagaman's architect-designed house is the Stick Style Queen Anne Lorenzo Hagaman House located at 112 Harrison Street in Frenchtown. It was built in 1889 according to the design of D.S.
