Thayne, Wyoming Some people in the family have wondered if Thayne, Wyoming was first settled by members of our family. Apparently, it was not. BEGIN Date: Fri, 7 Oct 2005 09:05:54 -0700 (PDT) From: Mary Johnson I saw your post regarding Thayne, WY. This is what I found: Thayne is named after a pioneer who first established a general store, Henry Thayne. Thayne, with its population of less than two hundred is known for its Cheeses produced in a local factory. Date: Fri, 7 Oct 2005 11:06:03 -0700 (PDT) From: Mary Johnson Henry Thayne is the son of Ebenezer Thayne, born 1820 in Abbey, Renfrewshire, Scotland. His mother Nancy Cunningham was born in Canada. They came down to Iowa then came west. I have no clue as to when the town Thayne was officially named. Ebenezer's father was also Ebenezer, born in Scotland. His sister Ellen Marshall Thayne is my ggGrandmother. A brother of Ellen's is John Johnson Thayne, born in Glasgow, Scotland. Their parents are Janet Lochead and Ebenzer Thayn. The whole family came to Canada from Scotland. Most of the Thaynes settled in Utah, most were Mormons. Much history on the Thayne family is on the internet. If you have Google, just type in his name and it should give you a start if you like. The Thaynes were a large family and very well could have spread all over. WY, AZ, Utah to mention a few. Your connections in PA I am not familiar with. But happy to help if I can. From Larry Clark January 16, 2006: Notes taken from the History of Ebenezer Thayne, Utah Pioneer Biographies, Volume 40. And from the journal History of 1861, it states that on May 13, 1877 Ebenezer Thayne was called by Brigham Young to serve a mission at Star Valley, Wyoming. After he finished his mission in Wyoming, The town and Post office was named after him and his son Henry. END
