Info I have on my wife's ancestor is a bit sketchy as to his origins. It is believed that he was born in the US (possibly New York) and came to Ontario as a child in 1797 (according to his land petition in 1819, when he was 24). It is possible that Amariah's father was another Amariah, and that there is a brother, Abijah Robbins (married Elizabeth Rawn). Amariah married Mary "Polly" Lawrence. They had at least 13 children in Canada, some of whom stayed, and some of whom went on to settle in Michigan: Moses, Jane, Abijah, William, Abigail, Rachel, Daniel L., Margaret, Henry J., John, Joseph, Sarah and Stephen. I've had a quick search through postings here, and I don't see anything that leaps out at me. Does anyone have a connection? Thanks! Mike. It is a great source to learn about these surnames especially as they relate to Sourthern New Jersey. Do enjoy learning a vast amount about this part of the Province of New Jersey which will become the State of New Jersey. Your observation that nothing jumps out at you reflects my own reaction to the names you gave in response to Sara's to give more information. Could you give the places they settled as far as you know in Ontario (then Upper Canada) and also MIchigan. The last two postings have been forwarded to another Rob(b)ins researcher in Ontario today. She has been tracking down each Rob(b)ins family in Ontario and has a fair database for some of them. Who knows your wife's family maybe of interest to her or one of the network we are tied into in Ontario. While we are on the topic of Robins who came up to Upper Canada, my friend in Ontario discovered this new lead and passed it along to me a few months back. She thinks it may the father of her Josiah Robins: Upper Canada and Canada West Naturalization Records (1828-1850) Data provided by the Friends of the National Archives of Canada Name: ROBINS, John Residence: Windham County: Norfolk Year: 1834 Volume: 4 File Number: 45 Microfilm reel number: C-15692 Reference: RG 5 B 47--- The scanned document shows this John Robins who swore allegence to the Crown on 7 Oct 1834 and in doing so would have lived in Upper Canada for seven years. That puts his arrival back to 1827 or before. Some of you have responded to my friend's postings in other forums/message boards and quoted 'land transactions between families in New Jersey and Upper Canada about that time or a few years prior to that. They are quoting resources posted within this Group's messages. A search on Canada pulls them up. That's all for tonight from Alberta. To the best of my knowledge, Amariah Robbins was living in the Midland District (which is now "Lennox and Addington County" and "Frontenac County" in Ontario) when he made his petition for lands in 1819. In 1820, he was living in the "Home District" in the township of Markham, according to his Military affidavit. He was granted lands in the Cooksville area of Peel County, and then moved part of his family to Moore Township in Lambton County in 1844. Some of his children settled in Port Huron, Michigan. Various of his children remained in different parts of Ontario (Peel, Adjala, Tosorontio, Muskoka). My wife is descended from Amariah's son John Robbins, who remained in Lambton County. Mike.
