I am following a lead that his parents may have been Joshua Robins and Mary Blatchley. Joshua and Mary were apparently divorced and Joshua married Mahittable Swayze (widow of Peter Hopkins). I have found one small clue that may help. In Knowlton Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, Sept. 19, 1774 Andrew Whitesell and Richard Shackleton made inventory of the estate Israel Swayze. In his will Israel Swayze named his children including Mahittable (wife of Peter Hopkins). In 1775, Joshua Robins, Andrew Whitesell and Richard Shackleton witnessed the will of Samuel Green. (Andrew Whitesell was married to Margaretha Green). This small clue puts Joshua Robins and Mahittable Swayze in Knowlton Townhip, Sussex County, New Jersey. NJ No. I believe this Joshua was likely at LEAST 21 in 1737 when he took out the mortgage. That would mean he was born around 1716. The Joshua of Thorold seems to have been born more in the range of 1740s-1750s. He was living in Thorold until at least 08 Dec 1817 when he sold some property in Thorold to Blatchley Robins. NJ Oops!! Sorry. Small correction... On 08 Dec 1817 Joshua Robins of Thorold sold property to SAMUEL HOPKINS--not Blatchley Robins. Blatchley died around 1814. (Now that I'm several years over 40 I have to remember not to try to cite things from memory! ;-) ) Tracey From: Robbinsfamilysouthjersey@yahoogroups.com on behalf of val king [vjean75@hotmail.com] Sent: Sunday, February 28, 2010 11:15 AM To: robbinsfamilysouthjersey@yahoogroups.com Subject: RE: [Robbinsfamilysouthjersey] Re: Joshua Robins of Hunterdon Co. NJ That's OK Being a few years over 70 I have the same problem. The Early Connecticut Marriages (on line) gives a marriage for a Joshua Robins & ___________ ? Dec. 21, 1758. Mary Blatchley was born 1742 . THIS Joshua (whoever he is) could be the husband of Mary Blatchley, which would fit the time frame for Joshua's arrival in Canada and the land grant of 1797. Too bad there's no name for his wife, nor a Mommy or Daddy. Which leaves us scrambling for further proof. I will give partial quotes from a small book written by John and Alice Robins, descendant of Job Robins son of John and Tabitha. "Joshua Robbins, his wife and 8 children along with Blakely Robbins his wife and 6 children, and two other adults, Sarah and Elias, all four being three brothers and a sister arrived early 1790's. .... One of the eight children of Joshua, probably a younger child, was John born 1785 (married Tabitha Strowbridge 1806)." The reference to a divorce between Joshua and Mary Blatchley is found in one of the "many" unsourced family member trees on ancestry.ca. which of course can be taken with a "grain of salt". NJ Information about the number of children like you cite in that write up typically comes from land petitions. So far I've only been able to find a summary of Joshua and Blatchley's petitions--and those details aren't the summaries. If we could find petitions with the number of children and whether they had wives with them--it would be very helpful! Here is the widow Sarah's petition: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~marcelo/Robbins/Thorold/SarahRobbinsPetition.jpg.pdf From: Robbinsfamilysouthjersey@yahoogroups.com on behalf of val king [vjean75@hotmail.com] Sent: Sunday, February 28, 2010 2:02 PM To: robbinsfamilysouthjersey@yahoogroups.com Subject: RE: [Robbinsfamilysouthjersey] Re: Joshua Robins of Hunterdon Co.
