Question - how confident are you in Isaac Lake b. 1828 being son of James Lake b. 1757. James would have been about 70 years old. Not impossible but it appears like it could be missing a generation in between. Regardless, we do have a James Lake born about at that time to John Lake and Margaret Snyder, but he married Margaret Hagerman and eventually settled down in Odessa, not far from Kiingston. So it is not a match to your James. It's possible he was a first cousin to our James, and that you descend of a sibling of John Lake. That would explain your DNA experiment when you labeled his parents John Lake and Margaret Snyder. I believe John had brothers named Henry, Jacob, Thomas, Nicholas and Abraham. Thomas had a son James b.1765 who married Hannah Jackson so we can rule that one out. Jacob's son James was born 1768 in New Jersey so that one doesn't seem to fit either. I don't have any other James recorded for the siblings. Wish I had better news but just not finding a match yet. Evan Lake is a 4th cousin to me and descends from Isaac=E2=80=99s brother J= ames Lake 1821-1897 and his wife Rachel Bell. This is what he had. He has= James born in England but an 1891 Census, on Isaac Lake, says both parents= born in the USA.[image0.png] I contacted the Norwich Archives because that=E2=80=99s where Isaac was bor= n and a lady named Janet has been very helpful sending me information. She= sent me James=E2=80=99s Will dated a few months before he died in 1844 and= it does say James Lake Brantford, on it. He mentioned his wife Jane and se= veral other children I never knew about. She also sent me information on him being married three times. I can send = you what she sent me but give me a few hours as we are trying to ready our = house to put it up for sale in a few days. The information was compiled by a Helen Stover who was working on the Stove= r family. She has since passed away and the Norwich Archives got some of h= er information but some was also tossed out by the family. It=E2=80=99s very possible that I don=E2=80=99t have his right parents, as = I did it as an experiment, and you could be right about him being a cousin = to your James. It=E2=80=99s been frustrating not being able to find out wh= ere he belongs. I have been able to put several Lake dna matches, on my tree because they a= ll have John Lake 1654-1729 and Neeltje Claessen as a common ancestor. So = I figured my James must fit in their somewhere. I also have Lake dna match= es that link me to some in Maine and New Brunswick Canada. [image1.png] Janet, from the Norwich Archives recently told me of Mary Polly Lake, which= she figures is James=E2=80=99s daughter and married James Perry in Norwich= and Family Search has Mary born in Albany New York. I have two dna matche= s with descendants of Mary=E2=80=99s that showed up after I put her in my t= ree. I will send you the information Janet send me later today. Hi Cathy,

I'm trying to fit you into our Lake tree, but have been unsuccessful so= far.

Question - how confident are you in Isaac Lake b. 1828 being son of James Lake b. 1757. James would have been about 70 years old. Not impossible but it appears like it could be missing a generation in between.

Regardless, we do have a James Lake born about at that time to John Lake and Margaret Snyder, but he married Margaret Hagerman and eventually
settled down in Odessa, not far from Kiingston. So it is not a match to your James.

Well I first got the information from a dna match to me.
Evan Lake is a 4th cousin to me and descends from Isaac=E2=80=99s brother J= ames Lake 1821-1897 and his wife Rachel Bell. This is what he had. He has= James born in England but an 1891 Census, on Isaac Lake, says both parents= born in the USA.[image0.png]
I contacted the Norwich Archives because that=E2=80=99s where Isaac was bor= n and a lady named Janet has been very helpful sending me information.

Janet, from the Norwich Archives recently told me of Mary Polly Lake, which= she figures is James=E2=80=99s daughter and married James Perry in Norwich= and Family Search has Mary born in Albany New York. I have two dna matche= s with descendants of Mary=E2=80=99s that showed up after I put her in my t= ree.
I will send you the information Janet send me later today.

cathy baker <marycatherinebaker@hotmail.com>: Jan 22 12:18A= M

Craig,

I hope that you got the email I sent you earlier today.

Here is the Will of my 4x Great Grandfather James Lake that Janet, from the= Norwich Archives, sent me along with these other two bits of information. = He died 26 July 1844.
Also some family information on James Lake. But it's not all correct. = James supposedly had three wives. My 4x Great Grandmother Jane Elizabeth = 1790-1857 was his last wife. Isaac, James and John are Jane's children= with James, that I know about and are mentioned in his will. He mentions = another son William, names a daughter Jane, and 'other daughters' n= ot mentioned.
Janet mentioned a daughter, Mary Polly Lake 1805-1891 She was born in Alban= y New York(I found that on Family Search) and died in Brantford. She was m= arried in Norwich, Ontario where James was and my Isaac was born. Mary Pol= ly is mentioned in the random pieces of information in the Lake collected i= nformation.
William was born1815-1906. He was born in Brantford and died there. I fo= und that information on Ancestry. I imagine that Mary Polly and William mi= ght be from James's second wife. I don't know about the 'other= daughters' mentioned in his will and haven't come across any names= in my searching.
I mentioned, in my early email to you, about the 1891 Census of Canada whe= re Isaac mentions that both his parents were born in the USA.

I hope these help and hopefully we can find out who James parents were. I = would really like to know where he, and me, belong in the Lake family tree.=

Cathy

I would so love to see where Craig Kanalley can fit me into the Lake family= . Although my Mom knew who her birth Mother was she had passed away severa= l years earlier.
Her birth Mother was Dorothy May Lake 1911-1986. Born in Hamilton, Ontario = daughter of Frank W Lake 1890-1952. His father was James Lake 1864-1920, h= is father was Isaac Lake 1828-1901. Isaac=E2=80=99s father is James Lake 1= 757-1844.

Cathy gives her Lake connection below.

Cathy, what is your GEDmatch kit number? (Has your Mom tested, since she wo= uld have twice as much Lake DNA as you?) I will add you to our GEDmatch Mul= tiple Kit Analysis tag group.

Craig Kanalley also has a marvelous Google drive spreadsheet where he can f= it you into the big picture.

FYI ... There was no "James Madison Lake". The middle name "= Madison" is a figment of someone's misguided "research".= Our James Lake was simply James Lake.

Subject: Lake family

Hello Wesley,

I got your email address from Annette Trusdell. She told me about you and = your researching the Lake family.
My Mom was born a Lake but given up for adoption in 1931. I took a dna tes= t with Ancestry and have been building the Lake side of her family.
I have up to my 4x Great Grandfather James Lake 1757-26 July 1844 buried in= Mt. Vernon church cemetery Brantford, Ontario. He was marred to Jane Eliza= beth Stover and she was his third wife. I don=E2=80=99t know who his parent= s are.
I have dna matches, with other Lakes, that link to John Lake/Anne Spicer an= d the Lakes in Gravesend New York.
On a whim I decided to put in John Lake 1728-1835/Margaret Snyder, who came= to Ernestown,Ontario, as his parents to see what might show up. I figured= if nothing did I could remove them.
Well four dna matches under their sons Christopher 1, John Jacobus Lake 2 a= nd James Madison Lake 1 showed up. So there=E2=80=99s a link there I=E2=80= =99m thinking.

I would really appreciate any help you could provide me with in finding out= if my James belongs here or not.

Thanks, Cathy

Hi Cathy,

Thanks for your emails, I got all of them, yes. I think the Albany
reference is interesting as our Lakes had ties to that greater area. As of=
now, we remain stuck though on how these Lakes intertwine.

Wesley is technically correct. However, some clarification is needed to un= derstand why the name =E2=80=9CJames Madison Lake=E2=80=9D keeps popping up= in the family histories of our James Lake, b. 1823, d. 26 Feb 1898 in Erne= stown, son of James Lake and Elizabeth Stover.

>From my notes posted to Family Search for James Madison Lake ID:LKNM-K8M:

The following history cited in Claud McMillan's "History of My Peo= ple and Yours" is in error and should not be used as a primary source = for the lineage of James Madison Lake. James Madison Lake, b. 1814 and Jam= es =E2=80=9CMadden=E2=80=9D Lake, b. 1823 are two different men.

James =E2=80=9CMadden=E2=80=9D Lake was born in 1823 to Elizabeth Stover an= d James Lake in Ernestown, fostered by his aunt, Margaret and continued to = live there until he died as a bachelor on 26 Feb 1898 per Ontario, Canada, = Deaths and Deaths Overseas, 1869-1947. He is buried in the Switzerville Uni= ted Church Cemetery. (Note: He was fostered by Margaret Lake and William = Madden because his mother died in childbirth and his father who had lost hi= s leg in an accident was left with 6 children to raise. He was named =E2= =80=9CJames Madden Lake=E2=80=9D as heir and executor in the probate papers= of William Madden, LDS Film #198,051.

James Madison Lake was born 14 Jan 1814 in NY, married Irene Markle in 1836= , lived in Trafalgar and Caledon, Peel Co., Ontario, and removed to Adams C= o., Illinois where he died 21 Mar 1863. He is most likely related to Peleg = and Jabez Lake, who also lived in Peel Co, Ontario, because of naming patte= rns within their families but more particularly that Jabez Lake and James M= adison Lake are both found living in Columbus, Adams Co., Ill in 1860. No p= rimary sources have yet been found linking the Ernestown Lake family with J= ames Madison, Peleg or Jabez Lake.
