From: "Linda Carr" Subject: Sorting the David Lakes Date: Sat, 7 Aug 2004 13:14:20 -0700 Correspondence to Lake Family Researchers - August 7, 2004 I am hoping we can research something that has been bothering me. Quite a while ago, I wrote to you to say that Sarah Beardsley was not married to David Lake II. We don't know who David Lake II was married to, but the Sarah and David mentioned in the Greenville Presbyterian Church records under baptisms and new members was actually David and Sarah Wells Lake. We know this because their sons, Billy, Phineas and Eli were baptized here. I offered proof through found correspondence that Sarah Beardsley was, and remained married to Peleg Sunderland, not David Lake II. (If you want more info on this, let me know and I'll send it to you). In your account of David Lake III who married Jerusha Kelly, it is very detailed about his war record. It's wonderful information to have. My question is, could he be a junior instead of the 3rd David Lake - and might his parents have been David, born 1733, and Sarah Wells and not the son of David, born 1724? 1. David was named in the Greenville Presbyterian Church marriage records as David Jr. when marrying Jerusha Kelly. 2. He was listed in the 1800 census as David Jr. 3. He was listed as being from Greenfield in the church records - the same place Phineas was from (if they were brothers it makes sense) 4. The David Lake who married Sarah Wells could have been in the war - the two Davids (born in 1724 and 1733) may have been confused - it's hard to tell who's who. 5. The children you have listed under David and Sarah Beardsley - Abiah and Dolly (Olive) may also have been daughters of David and Sarah Wells. 6. Abiah Lake married Nathan Botsford and became members of the Greenville Presbyterian Church the same day as Lucy Lake - wife of Edward D. Lake, who may have been Abiah's brother (not really any proof, but interesting). 7. Abiah named her children David, Eli and Olive - all of whom would have been her siblings' names. (See baptism records of Greenville Presbyterian Church) 8. Other researchers, such as Dick Dutton, have Abiah and Dolly (or Olive), listed as daughters of David Lake - they just didn't assign any particular David. It may have been David and Sarah Wells Lake. 9. David and Sarah Wells were married in 1763, yet the only children listed for them in Orcutt's book are Edward born 1777 (it was actually 1775), and Matthew born 1779. We know they also had Wells, William, Eli and Phineas - and so they may have also been the parents of David, b. 1766, Abiah, b. 1769, and Dolly (Olive) b.1771. We know that Orcutt was incorrect about Ann Leavenworth being the mother of his children (she was his second wife - Ann Beardsley was the mother of his children). Annette Truesdell, another respected researcher, had said there are many errors in Orcutt's book. Perhaps this is one of them. There is one record in the LDS Family Search Records that lists all of these mentioned above as the children of David and Sarah Wells Lake (See below). 10. The war records (they're copied from your Ancestry.com listing), may have been David Lake born 1733 and David Jr. - and not David born 1724 (see below). 11. I have contacted Don Parrot and David Emmons - the only other listings for a David Lake III, and they both said they copied their information from you, so there isn't anyone else's research to go by. 12. The war records I can locate under David Lake does not list him as a Jr. or the III. How can we research this further to be sure which David this David belongs to? We could start with the war records to see if he is specifically mentioned as David III, or if it was somehow added. As you can tell, this information is important for me to know, as David and Jerusha may possibly be the parents of Wells Lake, born 1796. In the 1800 census, David and Jerusha had two male children under 10 listed, and only Ralph is the only son known to be born before 1800. It just gives us more options for research if David III was in fact, David Jr. and the son of David and Sarah Wells Lake. Barbara, I just found an old email from you, which may be the best proof yet on David being the son of David and Sarah Wells. Looks like there is proof in the Fair Haven Church Records: Dated 10/31/2003 Hi Linda, Cleaning out a drawer, I found your email of April 2003 on David & Sarah Wells Lake. I agree the ages of the children listed for David and Sarah Beardsley don't go with the ages of the parents. I got that information from the History of Stratford Ct., Orcutt p.1234. For David and Sarah Wells, I have 2 children listed - names I got from the Fair Haven Church records in Stratford. Children listed were Susannah and David (b.1766) and no other info on these two children. You got your information on David and Sarah Wells Lake from familysearch.org. Is there documentation with it? War veteran, as was his father. At the age of 12 he stood in for his father who was ill and couldn't serve, in Col. Whiting's Regiment, 4th Militia, Capt. Wilcox's Company. Stationed near Fairfield, David III served 2 months. In 1780 he served again in his father's company for six months. Aggain, this was Col. Whiting's regiment. Brig. Gen. Gold S. Silliman commanded the brigade. Silliman was a POW, held on Long island, for a long period during the war. During one of his tours of duty, David Lake III was in Col. Canfield's Reg. (CT Militia), Capt. David Nichols' Company. He was at West Point on Sept 12, 1781. His rank was private. See pension File R-6088, Natl. Archives. The family, David Lake II, David Lake III etc. may have moved from CT to NY as early as 1784. According to David III sworn statement (see pension app.), he resided in the town of Coxsackie, then Albany co., until he moved to Paris, NY 1803. His parents remained in Albany co. He may have, for a time, resided in a section called Greenfield. He married Jerusha Kelly Jan 26, 1799 (should be 1794) at the Presb. Church in Greenville, NY. See church records, Albany State Library, Albany, NY. Also LDS records. David Lake III and family settled on a farm in what appeared to be the 7th Div. of Cox's Patent (1710), which is now the Frost farm. Both David and Jerusha are buried on this farm. the family had four children and was Episcopalian when in the Albany area. Otherwise, if I don't hear from you, I will stop sending you these emails. At the bottom of this email in red ink is the information I would like to locate. Barbara Peters thinks she found it at the LDS Library. Jo Ann, don't you live in Salt Lake City, and would you be able to find the info that Barbara references? Please let me know. Thanks, all. Linda Below is a listing of the children of David and Sarah Wells Lake that I have been able to establish. However, there are references to other children, since they were married in 1763 and the first one listed below was born in 1772. On the Family Search website of the LDS (http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp) there are other children listed for them: Susannah b. 1764 David b. 1766 Abiah b. 1769 Dolly or Olive b. 1771 (Date must be wrong, or she doesn't belong to this family, since Wells was born in Jan of 1772) Patty b. 1785 I don't know if any of these were also the children of David and Sarah, but Barbara Peters found records listing David and Susannah as being their children. This could be significant, as it could mean that the David Jr. listed in the census records was the son of David and Sarah, and not the son of David II, as many others have indicated. There may have been two Davids born the same year (1766), and this one may have been their son. If indeed David Jr. was the son of David and Sarah, then this David would be the father he replaced in the war. Barbara has written: David Lake III was a Rev. War veteran, as was his father. At the age of 12 he stood in for his father who was ill and couldn't serve, in Col. Whiting's Regiment, 4th Militia, Capt. Wilcox's Company. Stationed near Fairfield, David III served 2 months. He was at West Point on Sept 12, 1781. His rank was private. See pension File R-6088, Natl. Archives. However, all of the census records and church records listing him list him as David Jr., not David III. There are other reasons, which I've emailed you before, why I think Abiah could have also belonged to this family. Please let me know if you would like any additional information on her. Actually, I haven't even mentioned "our" Wells Lake. The Wells Lake who was the son of David and Sarah is another one. I'll put his information below. If we can prove that David Jr. was also their son, then it gives us another possibility for parents for "our" Wells. 1. David Lake, Jr. and Jerusha Kelly were married January 26, 1794 in Greenville Presbyterian Church. Our Wells was born in 1796 in Greenville. So, they may possibly have been his parents. 2. The 1800 census for David Lake Junior showed he had two male children under ten. On Ancestry, com family trees, there is only one child attributed to him who was born before before 1800 (Ralph). Perhaps, the other male was "our" Wells? 3. More importantly, if David Jr. belongs to this family, I think we should put him in his rightful place in history. Right now he is listed as being David 3rd, but he doesn't list himself anywhere as the 3rd. Sarah Beardsley was NOT married to David Lake II and I have found proof to that, but there are still listings of her with David Lake on Ancestry.com family trees. She was married to Peleg Sunderland and had six children with him. She was never married to David Lake II, and yet some people have her as the mother of David Lake III. Unless we correct the errors, they will just compound over the years. Here is the information on Wells Lake, b. 1772: a.. Name: Wells LAKE a.. Given Name: Wells a.. Surname: Lake a.. Sex: M a.. Birth: 12 Jan 1772 in Stratford, Fairfield, CT a.. Death: 26 Nov 1839 in New Paltz, Ulster Co., NY a.. Event: Number of Children - eleven a.. Note: Elected to the New York State Senate and served as a senator, 2nd District of the State of New York 1825-28. Listed in Tobias V. Cuyler's Albany Directory, printed by E. & E. Hosford. Wells's wife, Ruth, died in 1827, which may have discouraged him from running for re-election. Wells was most likely admired by his younger brothers. Brother Eli was listed in the 1810 Census on the line directly below Wells, and lived in Ulster at the time. Eli named a son, Wells, in 1816, and Wells named one of his sons, Eli, later that same year. a.. Correspondence from a granddaughter of Wells confirmed that Edward and Eli were his brothers. Greenville Presbyterian Church baptismal records of 1784, confirmed that additional brothers of Eli were Phineas and William. All were sons of David and Sarah Lake. He served under Captain Samuel Whiting in the Second Regiment during the campaign of 1762. He served from May 8 - Oct 28, 1762. He is listed under "Stratford Men in the Revolution" meaning he was from Stratford, CT. Whether he was born in Stratford or a nearby town is unknown. After 1762, Peleg Sunderland moved his family to Vermont where several of his children were born. He later re-enlisted under the State of Vermont for service in the Rev. Peleg was a member of the Green Mountain Boys, a citizen's militia founded in Fay's Tavern in Bennington, VT, in 1770. "None of the Yorkers in Clarendon seem to have made any further resistance to the Green Mountain Boys, except Benjamin Hough who, having March 12, 1774, obtained a commission as justice of the peace under NY, became so troublesome that it was found necessary to silence and make an example of him. Smith ; Barbara Peters ; Toni Brault ; Linda Carr ; Marianne Green ; Gail Rogers ; Michele T. Tsuji ; Jan Wheelock Sent: Monday, October 18, 2004 4:16 PM Subject: Children of David Lake and Sarah Wells On Friday I spent the day researching the Stratford records. I went through the old Congregational Church Records for Stratford, looking for the baptisms for David, Abiah & Dolly Lake. I'm hoping to set the record straight as to which parents these three people belong to. I do believe that David Lake and Sarah Wells are the parents of these children. Now I'm going to try to tell you why I think as I do. Remember these are baptismal dates and not birth dates. 1. Baptized Aug 1766 David, son of David Lake; bp. Jan 1769 Abiah, daughter of David Lake; bp. Aug 1771, Dolly, daughter of David Lake. (Note the dates, no days were included in any of these baptisms.) So unless we can find actual birth records, these are the only dates to use. Also, Sarah is not mentioned. That's the way they did things back then. These days wouldn't we as mothers be screaming, because we weren't included on the Baptismal records. I didn't find the baptisms for Edward and Matthew, (next research session,) but I can bet that David and Sarah were both mentioned in the records. You can see how Rev. Orcutt might be thinking back in 1886 when he put the History of the Old Town of Stratford together. Here we have three children of David and two children for David and Sarah. 2. Here is the baptism for the other. David, bp. Aug 28, 1726, son of David. Orcutt refers to him as David 2nd. Nothing more is known about him. 3. Abiah Lake bp Jan 1769 - Edward Lake and Ann Leavenworth, the parents of our David and his brother Matthew, named one of their daughters Abiah. She was born 6 Jan 1732. Nothing more is known about her. David and Sarah, of course, named their daughter Abiah, bp, Jan 1769. Matthew and Hannah Seeley, also named a daughter Abiah, she was bp. 1 Mar 1761, a year after they were married. Something must have been very special about her that the brothers would name one of their daughters after her. 4. Dolly bp. Aug 1771 - also known as Dorothy Lake, of Rensselaerville, who married October 1, 1800 Hervey (Harvey) Stone, of Freehold. Guess where they settled? On page 236, in the 1820 Census they are listed as residents of Gorham, Ontario, New York, right along with Edward and William Lake. Dolly Stone is buried in the Baldwin Corners Cemetery. I haven't found a burial for Harvey H. Stone, as he is known. On the 1855 census it states he is 79 years old, a widower, and he was born in Ontario Co., New York, which I doubt, as it also say he had been a resident of that county for 38 years. This would have him there about 1817. The 1820 census says he has 5 children. I found two, Chauncey and Harvey, Jr. Also, another older gentleman was living with them and he is probably the John Stone buried next to Dolly Stone. 5. William Lake - bp, 3 July 1794 in Greenville. He died October 4, 1873 in Vassar, Tuscola, Michigan. His wife's name was Sarah ---------- and I think it could be Stone, but done quote me on that until I find my source. Haven't located her death record. She may have died before the state started to keep records back in 1867. I have record of these children, but there may be others. Theodore, William, John Carson, Truman H. & Dolly S. This is something I was working on and just haven't gotten back to it. 6. As for Susannah Lake - I don't believe she is child of this family. I didn't find any trace of her in the Barbour Collection, nor I know, someone has her listed in the IGI in family search, as the daughter of David and Sarah Lake, born about 1764. Married to was it Lester Smith? That is a record submitted by a church member who didn't do the research on their relative and I sure as heck am not going to include her as a child. The only Susannah that I know of is the daughter of Phineas Lake. Maybe some of you can look in Ancestry to see if she is listed in a census with her husband or where did they settle. So, what do you think. Dolly was my clue that David and Sarah were the parents. When I found her in Gorham, I thought then. Was Orcutt wrong? Linda asked me the other day if I knew if David Jr. was the son of David and Sarah. I told her I didn't know. I wasn't going to commit myself until I had a chance to look at the records and my notes on these families, I feel certain we are on the right track. I feel even though we haven't found the father of our Wells, we all did a great job of coming together and researching out this Lake family. I will do some more research on William Lake and Harvey Stone and Phineas Lake, just give me some time. Then I will send you my results. I would like to hear you thoughts. If I have missed anyone please pass the information along. Jo Ann From: Jo Ann Brohl To: Jan Wheelock ; Michele T. Tsuji ; Renee M. Hervey George, of Greenville David Hall, of Greenville Subject: Re: Children of David and Sarah Wells Lake Hi Jo Ann, You've done a great job and I agree with your findings. I wish there was some way we could prove David Jr. was the son of David and Sarah Wells, but it has long been my belief he was. Would there be a pension record for David Sr.? Remember, David Jr. went into the service at age 12 as a replacement for his father. If we could find a pension going to David or Sarah, that should say something. There is a record of David Jr.'s pension, which was denied because he was underage, but I haven't found anything on David Sr. I also think Abiah was the daughter of David and Sarah for the reasons I mentioned before: 1. Abiah Lake married Nathan Botsford and became members of the Greenville Presbyterian Church the same day as Lucy Lake - wife of Edward D. Lake, who may have been Abiah's brother (not really any proof, but interesting). 2. Abiah named her children David, Eli and Olive - all of whom would have been her siblings' names. (See baptism records of Greenville Presbyterian Church) Something you mentioned made sense to me about Olive, or Dolly. You said you found the baptismal records as being August 1771. Wells Lake was born January 12, 1772. As long as Dolly was baptized, and not born in August of 1771, then it's possible she was his sibling. If it was her birth date, then it wouldn't be possible. Are you sure it was the baptismal date? Also, you said she went by Dorothy - or could it be entered into the church records incorrectly by someone thinking Dolly was short for Dorothy? Are you sure that she is our Dolly? It sure seems like it, since she was found living in Gorham with Edward D. and William! Jo Ann wrote: Dolly bp. On page 236, in the 1820 Census they are listed as residents of Gorham, Ontario, New York, right along with Edward and William Lake. Not only was Hervey Stone listed in the census records for Gorham in 1820, but Edward Lake is listed two lines below him, and William Lake is listed three lines above him! I would have to say it seems extremely likely she's their sister and that's why they moved there. Our Wells lived in Farmington - only about 20 miles from Gorham. Another reason I think he belonged to this family. Just want to clarify the above. How fun to find something new after all this time. Linda Date: Sat, 18 Feb 2006 11:55:17 -0800 From: Linda & David Carr Proof that David Lake, Jr., b. 1766, was the Son of David & Sarah Wells Lake!!! Correspondence discussing David Lake, Jr., b. 1766 - Linda Carr, Jo Ann Brohl and Barbara Peters, February, 2006 ------------------------------------------ Barbara & Linda, I found something of interest in my Lake files that you both will like. I have had a copy of this deed for sometime and feel fairly safe in saying it is our David and Sarah Lake that has signed it. This deed from Stratford, Fairfield, CT., dated August 19, 1792, between David and Sarah Lake of Coeymans (pronounced Quee'man) Albany Co., NY and 'our son' (deed actually says that) David Lake Junior of the same place. Isn't this what we have been looking for? Something that would include David and Sarah and son David, Jr.? It says Know Ye that we David Lake and Sarah his wife of the Town of Coeyamens in the county of Albany in the state of New York for the consideration of a valuable farm received to our full satisfaction of our son David Lake Junior of the town, County & State aforesaid. Do give, grant, bargain, sell and confirm unto the said David Lake Junior and to his heirs Assigns on certain piece of land situate in the Town of Stratford in the County of Fairfield and State of Connecticut at a place called Base or Bare Swamp or (another name for this swamp) containing about Five acres be this more or less. Bounded as follows Easterly on highway, southerly on Nehemiah Curtiss westerly & northerly on Nehemiah Peete. It is signed David Lake and Sarah Lake. (There is more to this deed. I didn't see anything else of importance to include.) This deed would tie the family with Coeymans, Albany, New York and Stratford, Fairfield, Connecticut. I happen to have a copy of David's (of Oneida Co. NY) letters applying for his pension. He says, in 1784 or 1785, he moved with his father to the town of Coxsackie, then Albany Co., where he resided until 1803. Coxsackie was formed March 7, 1788 and it was in Greene Co. Was it ever in Albany Co? I know some of the towns in Greene Co. were at one time part of Albany Co. I guess I'm not sure what he is saying. I guess I took it as Coxsackie, at that time was in Albany Co., or did he mean Albany Co is where he now resides, maybe the latter. Somewhere I have census records, but I haven't come across them. Could someone take a look at the 1800 Census and tell me where David Jr. is living in Albany Co, page 154? And the two David's that are also listed, if this helps pages 175 & 230. By the way he says he was born August of 1766 in his letters. If David and Sarah and family were in Coeymans in 1792, you would think we would be able to find them listed in the 1790 census. I think I have looked several times and they are not there. Were they missed when the census was taken or what? I guess we'll not know that one. I found this on film 005798, Index to Baptisms, marriages & deaths, 1692 - 1820, Episcopal Church of Stratford. Lake, Thomas July 30, 1689 Lake, Sarah " " " Lake, David Aug 28 1726 Lake, David Aug -- 1766 Leake, Abiah Jan 1, 1769 Leake, Dolly Aug -- 1771 What I didn't find were the baptisms for Edward 1776 or Matthew 1779, but I did make this note that the record was very faded and hard to read. I didn't have any dates for Sarah Wells until this, so I copied these dates. It looks like we might have her listed here. Wells, Sarah Dec 20 or 26 1724 Wells, Sarah Nov 07 1742 Wells, Sarah Nov 17, 1754 Wells, Sarah May 7, 1769 Now, I assumed these were baptisms coming from the church records. I'm going to take another look at this. I just wrote the information down and didn't make any copies. The title of the film mentioned baptisms and not births. Thank you for sending the material you had on David, I'll take another look at it later to see if there is anything else I can add. This is another deed, one dated Nov. 13th 1792, David Lake Junior of the Town of Cojamans (I've seen it spelled several ways) of Albany Co., New York for the consideration of 18 pounds he sold the same 5 acres more or less(mentioned in the first deed I sent) to Nehemiah Peet. Signed by David Lake, Jr. I don't know if you have the same problem, but I don't like Orcutt's, numbering for the Davids. I'm sure he did it to keep them straight in his mine as we are doing. I think it's time we change this. I think we should put them in there place, such as: David Jr. (David), (Edward) and etc. Wouldn't that be easier for others to understand? What I was asking, since I don't have access to Ancestry, I'd like to know where the three David's are living that are listed in the index for the 1800 census for New York. Jo Ann ----- Original Message ----- From: Linda Carr To: Jo Ann Brohl ; Barbara Peters Sent: Friday, February 17, 2006 6:20 PM Subject: Re: Another Deed Hi Jo Ann, So, just to get it straight, you're talking about the land in Connecticut, right? If so, that's wonderful, amazing and terrific!!! We actually have proof. You are the amazing one, Jo Ann. Where and how do you find your information? That's truly exciting! As for the Davids - for me it is easier to list them by their birth date, such as David, b. 1724 or David, b. 1766. If I haven't been doing this for a little while, I'll forget who is whose father, but I do know them all by their date of birth. Orcutt's numbering is crazy in that it only will work when used in context. If you just say David, # 5 - that means nothing. Whichever way you want to do it is fine, I'll comply, but I prefer birthdates. As for the 1800 census - David Lake, Coeymans, Albany, NY 1 male 10 - 16 1 male 45 or over 1 female 45 or over David Lake, Rensselaerville, Albany, NY 2 males under 10 1 male 10 - 16 1 male 45 or older 1 female 26 - 45 David Lake, Junior, Rensselaerville, Albany, NY - Matthew Lake is listed on the next line. It says Jr., so this is the one. And, Jo Ann, this Matthew could be David's brother, son of David and Sarah! Interestingly, Matthew has three sons under ten - and "our Wells" could be one of them!!!!! David Jr. 2 males under 10 1 male 16 - 20 1 male 26 - 45 2 females under 10 1 female 26 - 45 Matthew Lake 3 males under 10 1 male 26 - 45 2 females under 10 1 female 26 - 45 ~ Linda From: Jo Ann Brohl To: Linda Carr Sent: Friday, February 17, 2006 7:46 PM Subject: Re: Another Deed Linda, Yes, I'm talking about the property in Connecticut. I found this deed sometime ago. At the time we were talking two David & Sarah Lakes, so I wasn't sure which couple this belong too. When we eliminated Sarah Beardsley then it was obvious to me what I had. Then a couple days ago I reread David's (1766) application and saw the connection between Connecticut and New York. (By the way I like the birth date idea, it works for me too.) Also I have had time to read my old email that you sent back to me on Monday, dated Apr 2003. I really made some big mistakes in giving the birthdate of David Jr. as August 1764. I was wondering where everyone was getting that date. Although, Barbara was probably okay with that date, since David Lake's (1766) burial of Sept. 21 1848, age 84 would have him born in 1764. I think she caught the mistake. The other mistake ( a another typo) I had Ruth Hurd married to both Wells and Eli. I hope you will get on my case if you have any questions about my research. I won't like it, but I will appreciate it. Matthew Lake, yes I know where he was located and yes I do think he is the brother to David Lake Jr. And yes, I think one of those males under 10 is maybe our Wells. I've been saying that all along, but no one was listening. Try finding the family in 1810 census and you won't. I searched every state for that year and not one Matthew Lake was found. There is another Matthew Lake in the 1800 census, he is the brother to David (1733). Matthew Lake Males 40010 Females 10010 If you compare the ages of the family of both Matthews, you'll see what a difficult time I had trying to determine which Matthew I was working with. Thanks for sending the census information. Since I can use Ancestry at the library I just haven't felt a need to subscribe. Although lately, I'm thinking having access to the census would sure be handy. I will take a look at what you have posted on Ancestry. I just haven't found the time. Also, I agree with you on your thoughts about Family Search, it causes more trouble than we will ever know. I think of years to come of all the family lines that are not going to be correct, because someone couldn't take the time to check the records for their people. Amen. Wonderful!!!! This truly is exciting, isn't it - that we have proof that David Lake, Jr. was the son of David and Sarah Wells Lake! I have thought that all along and, as Barbara knows, have bugged her about it for years! I just had so many questions about it. Sure seemed funny that David and Sarah had no children attributed to them until they were married for ten years - and then had six that I found. I will add David Jr. to his proper place on my Family Tree webpage. I also believe that Abiah and Dolly should be added. Are you in agreement with that? I don't think we can add Patty, as there was only one source for her, and you can't depend on Family Search. I feel so elated to add those three to David and Sarah's brood! Now, about Matthew..... yes, Jo Ann, I know you have thought Matthew was the key to the mystery of Wells. I'll check the census records for 1810 for that same area and see what Lakes were there. Thanks for all your hard work, and especially your perseverance in connecting the deed to the right David Lake. Linda ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jo Ann, I just reread your email and have a question. Here's what you wrote: I found this on film 005798, Index to Baptisms, marriages & deaths, 1692 - 1820, Episcopal Church of Stratford. Lake, Thomas July 30, 1689 Lake, Sarah " " " Lake, David Aug 28 1726 - Lake, David Aug -- 1766 Leake, Abiah Jan 1, 1769 Leake, Dolly Aug -- 1771 - Because these records are listed together (only because they're in chronological order, alphabetically), I would think this is where Orcutt got the idea that David, Abiah and Dolly were the children of David, b. 1724. Since these are all Baptismal records and not birth records, that works out for Wells to be born in January, 1772. Otherwise, Dolly couldn't belong to this family. The other thing is, David, b. 1724 was not the son, but the grandson of Thomas and Sarah. Perhaps they raised him??? That would explain why he was not listed with his parents, David and Abigail Booth Lake, in the following record: STRATFORD, FAIRFIELD CO., CT VITAL RECORDS FROM BARBOUR 1639-1854 David Lake married Abigail Booth Jan. 21, 1724/25 Benjamin, son born Dec 5, 1727 Joseph, son born Feb 1, 1731/32 Abigail, dau born May 23, 1737 Hanna, dau born Jan 11, 1739/40 Andrew, son born Mar 2, 1741/2 ------------------------------------------------------------------- Also, regarding Sarah Wells, I have her birthdate as Nov. 3, 1742, so Nov. 7 for her baptism makes sense.
