He does appear in the 1800 and 1810 censuses, as you mentioned. These are the notes I have under Matthew Lake: Matthew Lake was Christened May 16, 1779. However, we do not know his birthday or year. There were two Matthew Lakes living in Albany and Greene Counties in the early 1800's. Matthew Lake, Sr., b. 1736, married Hannah Seeley and had a son, Matthew, Jr., b. 1771. That Matthew, b. 1771, can be found living in Coeymans, Albany, NY, in the 1800 census, along with his brother, Daniel, listed on the next line. The other Matthew was this one - the son of David and Sarah Wells Lake. He can be found in the 1800 census living in Rensselaerville, Albany, NY. He was 26 - 45 years old, which would put his birth year earlier than 1779. He and his wife had 3 sons under 10, and two daughters under 10. This Matthew was also in the 1810 census for the same town, page 5. His age was listed as 45 or over, making his birth year 1765 or earlier. Perhaps he was born earlier than previously thought, as David and Sarah were married in 1763. Matthew Lake was listed in the 1820 and 1830 Greenville census, but it is unclear which Matthew this was. Both were listed as over 45, so it could be either of them. (Listed with one "T" in the 1820 census). Re: Lake born Rensselaerville, Albany, NY terrbears Posted: 6 May 2010 9:26AM Using the 1790 through 1820 census information, I have followed several families, Matthew and (possible) daughter Irene, Benoni and son Hiram Fleming included - from CT through upstate NY to Greenville, NY. People lived in more closely knit communities then, so it was most likely that you would find a spouse from amoungst your neighbours. My ancestor Hiram Fleming born abt 1797 married Irene Lake born abt 1799. Matthew Lake was a neighbour of Hiram Fleming(s) in 1820 Greenville, NY. Matthew previously lived in Rensselaerville in 1810 as well as Benoni (search as Benson) Fleming. Both had children the right age to to be Hiram and Irene. Caroline Fleming b 1825 was their daughter - she married Reubin Lake b 1815. Reubin was a cousin of Matthew Lake. I have been reading up on the history of upstate New York and the families that settled there. Many families seem to have followed each other from one settlement to the next. I have found the same surnames in the census info as my family tree. Lakes, Showers, Botsfords, and Flemings all likely intermarried. This is an educated guess until (or if) I can find confirmation. Re: Lake born Rensselaerville, Albany, NY Linda Carr Posted: 11 Jul 2006 10:44AM A Reuben Lake was born June 14, 1767, in Connecticut. His parents were Elnathan and Amy Lum Lake. There was a Reuben Lake from Newry, NY, who married Rhene Thompson on July 20, 1796, in the Greenville Presbyterian Church in Greenville, NY. That's very near Albany. In fact, it may have been in Albany County at that time. I would think this is the same Reuben. Hard to say if he was the father of Schuyler, but people did tend to use family names down through the generations. This Reuben shows up in the 1810 census living in New Paltz, Ulster, NY. His name is spelled Reubin Lake. On Ancestry.com there is a sister listed for your Reuben, Hannah Elizabeth Lake. She has descendents who are living today, so you might be able to track them down to see if they have any additional information. As far as Sarah Lake, in the previous message, I don't have any info on her. Re: Lake born Rensselaerville, Albany, NY barbara coughlin Posted: 6 Jul 2006 6:23AM I am searching for the parents of Schuyler Lake who was born about 1811. He reported that he was born in Albany County ... perhaps this could be his family. All the info I have on him is from Wawarsing, Ulster County beginning with the 1840 census. Married Caroline Morse in 1828, had 10-12 children, he died in 1880. I am a descendant of his son Reuben 1845-1897. I have no information about his siblings, so it is hard to know if this could be his father. Might anyone out there know? Re: Lake born Rensselaerville, Albany, NY sstirling180 Posted: 4 Jul 2006 5:47AM I am looking for a couple, Sarah Lake & Cerral Young in NY, who are parents to Truman C Young, who was born in NY around 1823. I know its a longshot, but... I have also seen Lake spelled "Leach". Loch" Thanks, Ken sstirling@ev1.net Re: Lake born Rensselaerville, Albany, NY Terry Thornton Posted: 31 Mar 2006 11:48AM I have a John B. Lake, born somewhere in New York in 1801. That is all I know. Lake born Rensselaerville, Albany, NY lindacarr58 Posted: 28 Mar 2006 1:08PM Are you missing a father for your Lake relative that was born in Rensselaerville, Albany Co., N. Y. roughly between 1795 - 1815? Looking for children of Matthew who had 5 boys and 2 girls in 1810 census.
