Hi Barbara, I've been familiarizing myself with Thomas and Sarah Peat Lake trying to find why I had the info you asked about. A few years ago, another researcher and I worked for quite awhile trying to figure out Thomas Lake's parents. All we could do was eliminate men, but could not come to a definite conclusion as to who he actually was. I have much research and have been rereading all today - much to much to send to you. The reason I put down his place of birth was mainly through deduction. In other words, I discounted the other Thomas Lakes and their birth dates to arrive at his birth year of 1766. I am fairly certain this was his birth year. There are several others given - 1618, son of John and Margaret Reade Lake - I don't think so - he would be too old to have children born in the 1700's 1644/46, son of Henry and witch, Alice Lake - lived and died in Little Compton, RI. Not him. 1656, son of Thomas and Mary Goodyear - no, their son, Thomas, returned to England and became a barrister. 16??, son of John and Ann Spicer - no, they did not have a son 1662, son of John & Mary Coye Lake - no, they had one son, Caleb, who died young. Did not have any other issue That leaves the Thomas born in 1666 as being Thomas of Stratford. From the information I could gather, and from other researcher's whom I trust, I put down his place of birth as Derbyshire, England, as they had. But, those are the same researchers who have Edward as his father. As far as Edward being Thomas's father, I cannot find an Edward that could even be attributed to being Thomas's father, so I chose to leave that blank. There were several Edwards of that time, and I found written evidence that Edward may have been Thomas's uncle, not father - or perhaps, no relation. I know many others have written Edward as Thomas's father, but I honestly think they copied and didn't research it. Nothing wrong with that, but I just wanted to check it out, and I could not come to that conclusion. In rereading everything today, it looks like Sarah Peat was born in Stratford, CT. Her parents or at least there is evidence, that her father came to America months (April, I think) before she was born (October). Therefore, I will change her place of birth. If you would like an additional info on the above research, please let me know. Or if you have something concrete to go by, so I can add Edward as Thomas's father, please let me know. Thanks.
