THOMAS1 LAKE (Source: Jacobus, Donald Lines, History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield, 372.) was born Abt. 1662 (Source: John Peet and His Descendants, p. 13, gives his birth date as 9 Feb 1656/7), and died Abt. 1728 in Fairfield County, Connecticut (Source: Probate Records of Fairfield County, Connecticut. Vol 8, 1726. His will was dated March 9, 1726 and probated February 5, 1728). He married SARAH (PEET) PEATE Abt. 1685, daughter of JOHN PEAT and SARAH OSBORN. She was born October 03, 1665 in Stratford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, and died Abt. 1737 in Stratford, Fairfield County, Connecticut (Source: Probate Records of Fairfield County, Connecticut, Vol. 7, p. 227., reports Letters of Administration on her estate, April 7, 1737.). Notes for THOMAS LAKE: On February 6, 1694 or 1695 Thomas Lake laid out land in Stratford, Connecticut, a little north and on the east side of the falls of the Pasquennock River. In 1705, a highway was laid out, passing his home and extending to Pulpit Rock. (Benjamin L. Noyes, Lake Family Genealogy, Vol. 8, Branch of Thomas Lake of Stratford, Connecticut, Benjamin L. Noyes Collection, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.) Records of the General Assembly of the Colony of Connecticut, dated, October 1718, note the attendance of Thomas Lake in answer to petition of Richard Hubell. (Helen (Nellie) Lake Gibson and James Stewart Gibson, The Lake Family of Derby Connecticut and Greene County, New York, 1921-1931 [New England Historic and Genealogical Society Collection]) Pulpit Rock is the rocky end of a ridge just north of the Merritt Parkway and adjacent to White Plains Road. Religious services were held there before Unity Parish was established. (Arthur H. Hughes and Morse S. Allen, Connecticut Place Names, p. 605.) As the records of his children appear in the North Stratford (Unity, Long Hill Winter, Nichols [Old] Farms Parishes), it is likely that he lived in what is now the town of Trumbull. He was almost certainly born in North Stratford (Unity, later Trumbull), Fairfield County, Connecticut., (2) Connecticut, Church Records, 1962, Trumbull Congregational Church (formerly North Stratford), Vol. 1, page 32..), and died May 07, 1797 in Castleton, Rutland County., Vermont. He married ZERVIAH (SEVIAH) CHATFIELD 1762 in Connecticut, daughter of JOHN CHATFIELD and ELIZABETH JOHNSON. She was born October 02, 1737 in Derby, New Haven County, Connecticut (Source: Connecticut Town Birth Records, pre-1870 (Barbour Collection) Ancestry.com), and died January 03, 1833 in Castleton, Rutland County, Vermont (Source: Margaret R. Jenks, Castleton Cemetery Inscriptions, Rutland County,Vermont, page 14.). Notes for GERSHOM LAKE: In 1758, during the French and Indian War, Gershom Lake enlisted in Col. David Wooster's company to invade Canada. On September 22, 1761, the Governor of New Hampshire granted a charter for Castleton to Samuel Brown of Stockbridge, Massachusetts. There were sixty-five grantees, most of them from Connecticut. Few of the original grantees became residents. In 1767 the township was surveyed and in May 1770 the first potential settlers reportedly arrived to survey the land. The first three families from Salisbury, Connecticut arrived in May 1770. The first proprietor's meeting was held in Castleton in the same month. (Margaret R. Jenks, Castleton Cemetery Inscriptions, Rutland County, Vermont, p. 1; Nathaniel William Banks, "History in Towns: Castleton, Vermont", Antiques, January 1978, and H. P. Smith and W. S. Rann, History of Rutland County, Vermont, pp. 516-518.) In 1771, Gershom Lake moved his family to Castleton, probably from Woodbury. Tradition says that when they moved to Castleton, they brought all their possessions on horseback, as there were no roads. Seviah Lake brought apple seeds in her apron pocket which she planted and grew in Castleton. They settled one half mile south of what became the village of Castleton. At that time, the area was still inhabited by Indians and wild animals. Seviah Chatfield once shot a wolf that had entered their stock pen seeking to eat her sheep. The family cleared their farm from the forest and built the second log house, and later the second frame house in the township. The frame house was still standing in 1886. By 1775 there were reportedly 30 families and 8 to 10 single men living in Castleton, and by 1791, 141 families. (Jenks, ibid., p. 1-3.) During the Revolution, he was an Ensign, 3rd Lt., in Capt. Ephriam Buel's Company of Colonel Warren's Regiment, Vermont Militia. Ethan Allen mustered his Green Mountain Boys at Castleton before taking Fort Ticonderoga on May 9, 1775. The Revolution was a difficult period in Castleton. The Lakes hid anything of value not being used, either burying it or hiding it in the woods. On July 6, 1777 there was a skirmish with a British foraging party from Hubbardton. When the British passed through Castleton following the Battle of Hubbardton on July 7, 1777, Gershom was impressed to transport their baggage--after which they killed his oxen for beef. Seviah Lake was also credited with hiding an escapee from the British garrison at Fort Ticonderoga. Fort Warren was built in Castleton in 1778 and Gershom Lake was an active supporter of the militia in manning this fort. However, the loyalties of the village remained divided. Smith's History of Rutland County (pages 63-64) recounts the story of when he responded to an alarm early one morning, and Seviah Lake was left at home with the children. She and a friend fled together seeking shelter; however, they found themselves in the village outside the house of someone praying for a British victory--forcing them to seek help elsewhere. Although Castleton was organized as a town in March 1777, no records exist prior to 1782 when Gershom Lake was listed as a grand juror. Gershom Lake was also one of the 18 charter member of the Congregational Church organized in 1784. Interestingly, Seviah Lake was not one of the charter members. Gershom's house was south and east of the town on a hill looking northward over the village. In 1877, the house was still in use. In the early 1980's it was on land owned by a slate quarry. She was born February 05, 1769, and died January 14, 1855 in Mt. Blanchard, Hancock County, Ohio (Source: Barbara Ferguson.). Notes for ASA LAKE: Asa Lake moved to Castleton, Vermont with his parents in 1771. He first joined the Revolutionary Army at the age of 15. During the Revolution he served 169 days on active duty, including Parmelee Allen's Company of Rangers August 1, 1779 to November 17, 1779; Capt. Ephraim Buel's Company, Col. Warren's Regiment of Militia (1779, 1780); Capt. Isaac Clark's Company of Volunteers (October 1780); and Captain Israel Hurlbert's Company (1781, 1782) and Captain Nathaniel Blanchard's Company, Colonel Thomas Lee's Regiment (1781). Following the Revolutionary War he went to Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia). Land records show that he sold land in Vermont in 1785 and 1786. He probably left Vermont in 1786 or 1787. After his marriage to Chloe Abbott in September 1788, they moved to Harrison County, (West) Virginia. About 1790 Asa moved to Mason County, Kentucky, where he served with Daniel Boone and Colonel Simon Kenton fighting Indians. About 1799 the family moved again to Jackson County, Ohio Territory and settled near the salt mine works, east of the Sciota River. During the fall of 1821 or early in 1822 Asa moved to Hancock County, Ohio where he lived until his death. (McMillan, History of my People and Yours, p. 74 and State of Vermont, Office of the Secretary of State, May 20, 1851) He and his family were reportedly the first settlers in Delaware Township, Hancock County, Ohio (Courier Electronic Edition (CEE), an Internet edition of The Courier, newspaper in Findlay, Ohio. http://www.thecourier.com/opinion/Historic/Rl090696.htm April 4, 1997) More About CHLOE ABBOTT: Baptism: March 12, 1769 (Source: IGI.) Notes for MILTON LAKE: Milton Lake moved with his family to what is now Jackson County, Ohio in 1799. He left home at an early age, arriving on foot in Clark County, Illinois in the fall of 1817 where he was one of the earliest settlers. (Obituary, Clark County Herald, http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ilclark/misc/1800dths.htm) The first settlement of Clark County was made on what is known as Union and Walnut Prairies. It was made principally by emigrants from Kentucky, North Carolina, New York and Ohio. Milton Lake was a celebrated wood chopper… ( "EARLY RECOLLECTIONS OF CLARK COUNTY" BY John Littlefield, Editor, MARSHALL WEEKLY MESSENGER, 2/4/1869, http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ilclark/misc/erly-his.htm.) Milton settled in York Township and farmed the rich land of this area until 1852 when he moved to the county seat, Marshall. He originally purchased land in Marshall in 1835, apparently speculating in land there along with many other early residents of the area. According to the Death information in the Clark County Herald of January 12, 1872 he died in Walnut Prairie. When he moved to Marshall, Milton engaged in various businesses, principally the marble business. More About NANCY C. LAKE: According to family tradition, William Lake left home when he was about 15 (circa 1842), which may have been about the time his mother died. He went to Tennessee and from there made two trips to California during the gold rush as a scout. His first trip was reportedly in 1849. His brother can be found in California records, but there is no record of him in California. On his way back from the first trip he stopped in Shelby County, Texas where he taught school. He returned there from his second trip to marry one of his former pupils, Nancy E. Fallwell, in 1855. William Lake remained in Texas during the Civil War, but joined the Texas State Troopers for at least two brief periods. He is listed twice in Texas Civil War records: 1st Lt., Captain Belk's Company D, 1st Regiment (Panola County) 4th Brigade, Texas State Troops (December 1862); and Private, Capt. William C. Lyon's Company B (Panola County), 4th Brigade, Texas State Troopers (January 1863). He was described in the second record as 5'10", blue eyes, light hair. He always believed he fought his brothers who were in the Union Army. It is most likely he fought in the Red River campaign of 1864. William Lake initially settled in Shelby County, but later moved to Panola County. He settled on a farm, part of which was still owned by his grandson Troy Lake in 1987. It is about 15 miles southwest of Carthage on Farm Road 1971. Today part of the original farm is covered by Lake Murvaul. The house, which later burned, was on the hill not far from the fishing camp cabins. The Lake graveyard where he is buried was on his farm and today is on a hill above the lake. More About WILLIAM A. LLOYD EUEL8 LAKE, SR. (JOSEPH MARSHALL7, WILLIAM A.6, MILTON5, ASA4, GERSHOM3, EDWARD2, THOMAS1) was born August 09, 1908 in Dotson, Panola County, Texas, and died August 09, 1977 in Lewisville, Dallas County, Texas. He married MARION MARIE ALLEN (Source: Spelling Marion for her first name in handwritten note from her sister and amended application she submitted for her son's birth certificate.) April 07, 1932 in Jacksonville, Cherokee County, Texas, daughter of ROYL ALLEN and PEARL WHITE. She was born March 23, 1910 in Mineola, Wood County, Texas, and died December 19, 1980 in Friendswood, Harris County, Texas. Notes for LLOYD EUEL LAKE, SR.: Lloyd Lake's family moved to Jacksonville, Texas, in 1921, when he was about 13 years old. Dr. Lake finished high school when he was sixteen and went to the Texas State Dental School, graduating in 1929 at the age of 20. Because of his youth he had to obtain a court order in order to receive his Doctor's degree before he was 21. Initially, he practiced dentistry in Lovelady, Texas; however, he soon moved to Jacksonville and established a practice there. Before he married Marion Marie Allen at the First Christian Church in Jacksonville on April 7, 1932, their engagement was a secret. Mrs. Lake said that only a few days before the wedding, she was warned by a friend not to spend so much time with the Lake boy because people would start to talk. Henry Allen recalled that his father helped build their first house in Jacksonville. It was south of town off the Rusk highway hear a railway line. (In 1998 the site was a shopping center.) The house burned with all their wedding presents. They moved to Henderson in early 1937 and lived there when both children were born Aunt Fannie Lake lived with the Lakes when the oldest was born because Marie Lake was so ill. She decided she would teach Dr. Lake to learn to drink strong coffee and made it a little stronger every day. He said something to her about it the first two or three mornings, then he quit drinking coffee. In 1945, Dr. Lake became a silent partner in Sav-way Supermarket in Texas City with Marie Lake's brother, Bruce Allen. Eventually, he bought Bruce out and in 1945 they moved to Texas City to manage the store. The business was a success and they eventually opened a second store in Galveston. In the late 1940's Safeway Supermarkets threatened to sue the Lakes for infringement of their trade market and the name was changed to Gulf Coast Bargain Market. Dr. Lake was on the Galveston causeway at the time of the first explosion in the Texas City Disaster in April 1947. He said it sounded like a gun was shot next to his ear and it seemed like his car stopped for just a second and then jumped. The police would not let him enter Texas City by the usual route near the Monsanto plant. They told him a boxcar was on fire. He still did not think about what it was until he saw people running from the plant. He also saw people running across the prairie barefoot in their nightgowns and robes. Seeing these people scared him. He did not really realize how bad things were until he saw the store windows blown out. During World War II Dr. Lake was exempted from military service because he was one of the last dentists in his area. Therefore, as the Korean War dragged on, he was called and given the choice of volunteering as an officer or being drafted as a private. He volunteered and was commissioned as a Lt. Col. in August 1953, right after the end of the Korean War. Dr. Lake closed the dental office he had opened in Texas City as well as Gulf Coast Bargain Market. After basic training at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, Lt. Col. Lake was assigned to the Southern Command Dental Clinic in Munich, Germany. In 1956, he returned to the United States and reopened his dental practice in Saint Jo, Texas. In 1958 he opened a second office in Gainesville, Texas, and in 1959 moved to Gainesville. Dr. and Mrs. Lake purchased their last home on 321South Dixon Street in Gainesville. Dr. Lake's eyesight began to fail in the late 1960's and he closed his dental practice. In 1970-1971, they lived with their son in Washington in order to care for his oldest two children. When he went overseas in 1971, they returned to Gainesville and in 1972, though legally blind, Dr. Lake entered Brite College of the Bible at Texas Christian University. He completed his divinity degree in 1975 and took over the First Christian Church in Grapeland, Texas. He remained at Grapeland until 1977 when his failing health forced him to return to Gainesville. He entered a nursing home in Gainesville in the summer of 1977, moved to a nursing home in Lewisville, Texas where he died on his birthday that August. Later she worked for the local Magnolia distributor. She started college at Stephen F. Austin State Teacher's College, but had to leave after a year because of a lack of funds. Her brother, Henry, recalled that she told the story of she and Lloyd Lake going to Love's Lookout near Jacksonville, turning up their car radio and dancing on the parking lot.
