It must be a labor of love. There is no references to the information about the Reades. I believe the information about John Lake, his wife Margaret Reade, and her sisters Elizabeth and Martha and brother Thomas to be correct since it agrees with the article by W. G. Davis in the NEHGR. He adds that Thomas was a governor of Stirling Castle, Scotland and a Colonel in the Army during the Commonwealth. After the Restoration in 1660 and if he was still in the army, he may well have been retired. He could then return to Wickford to die. If that is what is recorded in the Wickford parish records. I can find no reference to Salem, Essex or Pemmersley, Essex. The sources of English 'births' before 1837 are the parish records of baptisms. Often some towns and village names are lost over time, but the parish names remain. I have two parish maps of Essex and cannot see either name on them. I could have missed them but until I know they are genuine, I take an extra critical eye at what is said about the Reades. Davis does mention the John Lake remained in Essex with at least one son, when his wife and two daughters emigrated with the Winthrop Fleet to Mass. The son, either John or Thomas died presumably in Britain in1657 aged 40 or 38. The assumption of Britain is a letter from Scotland to Mass mentioning the death. Nothing is known if either son married or had issue. Frank
