From: lakegen at comcast.net (Frank Lake) Date: Sun, 27 Jan 2008 11:07:01 -0500 Subject: [lake-surname] LAKEs in England The web page below perpetuates the myth begun before 1913 that John Lake who died in 1612 in Essex, England was the son of Richard Lake and Ann Wardell. - see http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/GALLUP/2001-12/1008032524 This quotes the article that explodes the myth - Walter G. Davis, "Ancestry of John Lake, Husband of Margaret(Reade)Lake," NEHGR; vol 84, no 3 (Jul 1930) pp 304 to 317. I think it can also be read on Ancestry.com http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=BookList&dbid=48087&offerid=0%3a7858%3a0 English Origins of New England Families Second Edition Vol II. The rest of the information on the web page seems to agree with Davis. From my own research Richard Lake was baptized 16 Jul 1570 at Irby upon Humber which is in the NE corner of Lincolnshire England. He was the second child of John Lake & Margaret Osgarby. John had at least one previous marriage and probably had a son also called John. John also had a posthumous son John. Richard married (1) Ann Wardell 18 May 1600 at Keelby Lincolnshire. Their first son was Edward who became Sir Edward bt & probably Richard. (2) Ann Morrallay whose children were Thomas, John baptized 19 Nov 1618 and others. All were baptized at Tetney which is near Irby. Later John was a tailor at Boston MA dying there after 1676. He may have had a son John who died before his father as John the father's will does not mention any children.
