We share two ancestral names in common-Buckham in County Durham and Lake in Devon. A maternal great grandmother was MARY ANN LAKE (Annie) and I have had great trouble researching her due to the failing memories of my aunts (they thought her name was Annie and that she came from Somerset!) and the fact that she seems to have moved around the country quite a lot. Thanks to the new alphabetical surname index for the 1881 census I have at last tracked her down. She was born circa 1855 in Heavitree near Exeter, married JOHN MACLEAN in Scotland circa 1979/80 having her first daughter ANNIE MARY MACLEAN there in 1880 before moving to Twyford near Winchester in 1881 where John was a butler. Five years later when my grandmother EVELYN was born the family lived in London where John worked for Lord Halifax. I suspect that Annie was also in service. At the moment that is all that is known. I will, however, be visiting the Society of Geneologists in London next week as it has the Scottish records on microfiche and I am now hopeful of obtaining a marriage certificate. I will also be visiting Myddleton Place to see what I can find on Annie and hopefully I will be able to track down her birth certificate. Once I know her father's name I will post the details. Does any of this sparce information connect with anyone, I wonder? Should anyone be interested I have extracted those with the surname Lake from the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census for Heavitree, Devon. Please contact me if you have an interest. Heavitree appears to have been a garrison town with the possibility that many of those appearing on the census might not have been local men. I have encountered a Mary Ann Lake born 2/8/1854 Pellav's(?) Buildings, Cowick Street, St Thomas (Heavitree is I believe in the same parish both near Exeter). Her parents were William (a tailor) and Rebecca Lake nee Blagdon living at Odger's Buildings, Commercial Road, Exeter. Unfortunately, this was not the one I sought and so if anyone wants to lay claim to this certificate please contact me. There are still two other possibilities both born quarter 2 1854, registration districts Newton Abbott and Tiverton, names Mary Ann and Ann respectively. I stress registration districts as they may frequently be some miles away from the actual birthplace and as Tiverton is really just down the road from Exeter. Does anyone have any knowledge of these two Mary Ann Lakes? It would help me to eliminate one or both of them. Yours, Paul.
