From: "LizM.27" Date: Fri, 15 Sep 2000 22:06:15 +0100 I am looking for information about the family of my ggrandfather Samuel Lake who lived in Stoke Newington, London around 1880s. Some of his family moved to California early 1900s. From: "Frank Lake" Date: Fri, 15 Sep 2000 20:47:11 -0400 Here is the only Samuel Lake recorded as living in Stoke Newington on 5 April 1881, the Census night. I will see if I can find him on the 1851 Census for Salcombe. The information is a little garbled, please get back to me if it doesn't make sense. It is a relatively long way from Salcombe. I doubt if it was the same person. His mother was described as 53, Laundress pauper. I also checked for any Lakes born at Salcombe, just one but now living in Plymouth. I tried using Salcombe as the census place but got nothing. It is likely that the census district is not called Salcombe. If you search out the Salcombe, and Devonshire pages of Genuki http//:www.genuki.org.uk I think, you should learn the local census districts. I can do another look up, if you find anything. PS There was over 1,000 Lake recorded in the 1851 Census in Devon, It is not at all unlikely that your Samuel was missed in the Census or had not been born.
