I have a letter written by my ?great grandfather in 1906 which is about his family history as he remembers it. The Lakes in Truro originally came from Plymouth. In this letter he says...."My grandfather, Henry Lake, was born in the Parish of Holsworthy in the year 1752, Devonshire, England. His parents were farmers and died when he was young and he was brought up by his uncle. He had seven brothers and sisters. One of his brothers, Wm. Lake, by name, was a Captain in the British Navy. My grandfather, Henry Lake, when he grew up, moved up into Monmouthshire, England, to be manager of the estates of Thomas Lewis, Esq., a wealthy man who lived in the Parish of Trelleck of that county, where he was married to Sarah Lewis, a farmer's daughter, at Trelleck, about the year 1788." I've had the Devon Records office search their records for Henry's birth but to no avail. They found a couple of families that have a break in their otherwise regular birth cycle, meaning that the wife might generally have a child every two years, and there is a two year span that Henry might have been born into, but their are no birth records for him. My ?great grandfather, William Lake who wrote the letter mentioned above, ended up in Clinton, Iowa along with a few other Lake families. Some I've been able to link to my Lake's. Another family I have traced back to the Lake's in Cornwall. I hoped that perhaps if I traced them back far enough I would find Henry's parents. So far I can only get to Andrew Lake, b. 1785. Is he Henry's older brother? What happened to those other children? Might one of them be your Elisha Lake whom you are trying to find parents of, shipped off to be raised by a relative? Lake given names that seem to reappear in several generation are Thomas, William, George, Elizabeth, Ann, James, Mary and John. If you or anyone on the list has any suggestions as to this family, I'd be happy to share what information I have. I have posted some of my Lake research and the whole Lake letter on a webpage...charsbrokenbranches.com. Charlotte
