Death: 1727/28 in Stratford, Fairfield, CT a.. Event: Number of Children Nine a.. MARR: a.. Note: Known as Thomas of Stratford. Reference guide: "A History of Your People and Mine" by Claud Nelson McMillan, Chapter 2. It is unknown who his parents were. However, the following could be ruled out: Henry & Alice Lake - From the story of "Alice Lake Executed as a Witch" by Alice Marie Beard, the descendants of Alice and her son, Thomas, b. 1644, are listed, as well as his children. He is NOT Thomas of Stratford, but lived and died in Little Compton, RI. John & Margaret Reade Lake - From the "Ancestry of John Lake, Husband of Margaret Reade Lake" by Walter Goodwin Davis, B.A., LL.B., Published in New England Historical & Genealogical Register - Margaret separated from her husband in 1635 when she moved to America. John remained in England until his death. Their son, Thomas, born in 1618, was too old to be Thomas of Stratford and living until 1628. Some records show this Thomas marrying "Mary" in 1638 and living in Boston, MA. Thomas & Mary Goodyear - from "A History of My People and Yours" by Claud Nelson McMillan - their son, Thomas, b. 1656, returned to England and became a barrister. John & Ann Spicer Lake - did not have a son named Thomas. John & Mary Coye Lake - had one son, Caleb, who died young. Did not have any other issue. Death: Aft 1759 in Litchfield, CT a.. Note: Edward and first wife, Ann Beardsley, were married June 14, 1731. Her birthday was November 4, 1705. She died at age 47 in 1753, after all of the children listed below were born. Edward's second wife, Anne Leavenworth, was the daughter of James Leavenworth, b.1699 and Esther Trowbridge, b.1695. She was born April 24, 1733 - much too young to be the mother of any of the children listed. She and Edward married sometime after Ann Beardsley's death in 1753. Claud Nelson McMillan, in his book published in 1956, listed Anne Leavenworth, daughter of James Leavenworth, as being the wife of Edward, which she was. But in researching her personal history, she was too young to be the biological mother of his children. LDS records list both women as being married to Edward Lake, and in checking the birth dates of both women, it was Ann Beardsley who was born in 1705. Ann Beardsley, and not Anne Leavenworth was the mother of all of Edward's children. Note: Marriage confirmed from Early Connecticut Marriages: Seventh Book, Stratford-Trumbull, from Fair Haven Church Records, page 98. It is very possible David and Sarah had more children, since they were married in 1763, and their first child listed below wasn't born until 1772. David may have been in the war and away from home, and/or some of the children attributed to other Lakes may have been theirs. There were several David Lakes listed as serving in the war, so it would have been easy to mix them up. An error in the book, "A History of Your People and Mine" by Claud N. McMillan listed Anne Leavenworh as the mother of David and his siblings. However, it was Ann Beardsley - the first wife of Edward, who was the mother of all of Edward's children. He may have also made mistakes in listing David and Sarah's children. David and Sarah moved to Greenville, NY, in the early 1790's according to Greenville Presbyterian Church records, where Sarah joined the church on May 18, 1794. They are found in the 1800 census living in Coeymans, Albany Co., NY, along with son, Eli, who was 16 at the time. Note: Elected to the New York State Senate and served as a senator, 2nd District of the State of New York 1825-28. Listed in Tobias V. Cuyler's Albany Directory, printed by E. & E. Hosford. Wells's wife, Ruth, died in 1827, which may have discouraged him from running for re-election. Wells was most likely admired by his younger brothers. Brother Eli was listed in the 1810 Census on the line directly below Wells, and lived in Ulster at the time. Eli named a son, Wells, in 1816, and Wells named one of his sons, Eli, later that same year. Another brother may have named his son after Wells, as there was a Wells W. Lake born in 1796 that no doubt belonged to this branch of the Lake family tree. It is unknown, however, who the father was of the younger Wells Lake. Correspondence from a granddaughter of Wells confirmed that Edward and Eli were his brothers. Greenville Presbyterian Church baptismal records of 1784, confirmed that additional brothers of Eli were Phineas and William. All were sons of David and Sarah Lake. Females 0-10 3 (?) 16-26 1 (?) 26-45 1 (Lois) Edward and Lois were married in 1800 and may have taken in other family members which reflect the older children above. Two of the three younger daughters do not show up in the 1820 Census. Edward's brother, Phineas, was also listed on the same page in the 1810 Census records as living in Greenville. 1820 Gorham Census showed Edward, Lois, Myron, Denison, Harriet and another daughter age 10-16. Edward's brother, William was listed as also living in Gorham. Brothers Phineas and Eli lived in nearby Mt. Morris. 1830 Gorham Census showed Edward, Lois, Denison, Harriet and another daughter age 20-30. Name: Matthew LAKE a.. Given Name: Matthew a.. Surname: Lake a.. Sex: M a.. Birth: 1765-1779 in Stratford, Fairfield, CT a.. Christening: 16 May 1779 Stratford, Fairfield, CT a.. Note: Matthew Lake was Christened May 16, 1779. However, we do not know his birthday or year. There were two Matthew Lakes living in Albany and Greene Counties in the early 1800's. Matthew Lake, Sr., b. 1736, married Hannah Seeley and had a son, Matthew, Jr., b. 1771. That Matthew can be found living in Coeymans, Albany, NY, in the 1800 census, along with his brother, Daniel, listed on the next line. Unless there was another Matthew somewhere in the family we don't know about, the other Matthew was this one - the son of David and Sarah Wells Lake. He can be found in the 1800 census living in Rensselaerville, Albany, NY. He was 26 - 45 years old, which would put his birth year earlier than 1779. He and his wife had 3 sons under 10, and two daughters under 10. This Matthew was also in the 1810 census for the same town, page 5. His age was listed as 45 or over, making his birth year 1765 or earlier. Although his parents were married in 1763, we do not have any children listed for them until 1772. Perhaps he was born earlier than previously thought. Matthew Lake was listed in the 1820 and 1830 Greenville census, but it is unclear which Matthew this was. Both were listed as over 45, so it could be either of them. (Listed with one "T" in the 1820 census). Might this Matthew Lake be the father of Wells Lake, born 1796 in Greenville, Greene Co, NY? Note: Christened along with brothers Eli & William in Greenville, NY. May have been named after his mother's brother, Phineas Wells, who died in infancy. 1810 Greenville, NY, Census listed him on the same page with brother, Edward D. Lake. 1810 Census showed one male 10-16, one 26-45, three females under 10, one female 16-26. Since he was married in 1804, it is unknown who the male 10-16 was. 1820 Census showed him in Mt. Morris along with his brother, Eli. Brothers William & Edward D. were in Gorham, NY, about 50 miles from Mt. Morris. 1820 Census showed two males under 10, one 16-18, one 16-26, one 26-45, three females under 10, four 10-15, one 16-26. His wife, Patty, was not reflected in this census, as she would have been 26-45. However, a son, Franklin, was born about 1822, according to his census record of 1880. LDS records listed Patty as the mother of all of Phineas's children, however, the birthdates were incorrect. Perhaps she was visiting relatives in Connecticut? 1840 Census showed him in Portage, Allegany Co., NY, which is now in Livingston, Co., not far from where he was living in 1820. 1850 Census showed him living in Portage with his son and family. Age verified by census.
