James and his 5 brothers served in the civil war) and passed away June 25, 1946 in Arnold's Park, Iowa. Dad says he drove out to Chula Vista, Cal. only a few days after he was discharged from the service to bring Mary Ellen Robbins Miller home to Iowa. She had been spending winters in Cal. with another daughter. She barely arrived home and passed away sudenly. I had seen them in Iowa, I think in early jackson Co. prop records or a marriage record in the process of identifying my Daniel Robbins and brother Hanson M, both of whom were in 1850-56 seen on the IA census which the state itself recorded. That was in order to measure the population growth for purposes of representation, They were in some detail, some more than others. Very useful for my nitpicking research through the Entry Deeds and subsequent township plats. They were more detailed in the years they were hoping to achieve statehood. Was he one of those related to Thomas and wife Elizabeth? Never quite resolved how long they were in Jackson Co IA after their entry deed. I did not see them on the Farmer's Creek or Iron Hill cemetery list if memory serves. Just curious, in that I may have overlooked a connection there. Many thanks if you have that information. I have information below for you. John Robbins and Elizabeth Bronson (Bronston) married in Mercer County, Penn. in 1827. Oldest son is James Robbins born 1828 in Mercer County, Penn. (NW Penn.) They had 11 children. John and Elizabeth Robbins moved to Iowa in 1850 according to John's obituary. First settled in Jackson County, Iowa. James remained in Mercer County, Penn. for the 1850 census. However, He married Lucetta Doss 5/12/1855 in town of Fulton, Jackson County, Iowa. ( Lucetta Doss daughter of Greenberry and Eliza Mikels Doss who were from Montgomery County, Indiana. There is a marrige record in Linn County, Iowa for 1849 for Greenberry Doss and an Elizabeth Cook. I do not know what happened to his first wife, Eliza Mikels.) Also according to John Robbins obituary, the family moved to a farm stead near town of Center Point, Linn County, Iowa in 1854. That is near large city of Cedar Rapids today. James Robbins listed several times in census records and obituary as being a shoemaker by trade. Was listed as residence of Cedar Rapids at time of enlistment in 1862 into the 20th. Iowa Infantry Regiment. Also in the same regiment were James' brothers: William, John Jr., and Vincent. The other 2 brothers, Samuel and Aham were in the 9th. Iowa Infantry Regiment. The brothers all had large families too. But William and Vicent died in the war. Several others died soon after the war and left a number of orphan under-age children. James Robbins died in 1889 of tuberculosis. He did live long enough to see his grand-daughter, Ruby Miller born 1888, daughter of Mary Ellen Robbins and Henry Miller. Ruby Miller my grandmother who married Arthur Russell at the Friends Church In Arnold's Park, Iowa 1909. In my research in Linn County, there were several other families by the name of Robbins there prior to the appearence of my Robbins ancestors. Have been unable to make connection between them as yet. Also in the 20th. Iowa Infantry were another William Robbins, Zechariah Robbins, and Daniel W. Robbins. Altogether, according to American Civil War Research Database out of Mass., there were 51 soldiers in Iowa regiments with the last name of Robbins. I see some born in Penn., Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Canada. Most Iowa soldiers were born in the east and came to settle Iowa with their parents when small children in 1840s and 1850s. Iowa became a state in 1846. However, much of north and western Iowa were sparse populated and very wild. Indian massacre in NW Iowa in 1857 by Spirit Lake. Most population in eastern Iowa along the Mississippi, Des Moines, and Cedar Rivers. Not many railroads beyond Iowa City until after the civil war. There was another Daniel M. Robbins in the 26th. Iowa who gave his residence as Fulton, which is in Jackson County, Iowa. Born in Ohio.Age 39 in 1862 when enlisted. Other Jackson County Robbins: Henry c. Robbins age 44 8th. Iowa Cavalry; Henry Robbins age 19 24th. Iowa; Timothy Robbins age 18 24th. Iowa; all born in Canada. And one John Robbins age 21 16th. Iowa born Ohio. Haven't come across a Thomas Robbins. Anything i can help you with further? Any connections? I could list some of the Robbins brothers' children. All the best... Have always been curious if there was any near connection, but your info clears them from my group nicely. No need to continue checking them out....I have used the Civil War records to confirm my Daniel M.Robbins of Jackson Co.,his service, pension later life to 1890. I had seen James and Lucetta marriage record while searching the 1850-60 county licences. I think also saw it printed in the Jackson Co History marriage lists. Those Iowa counties on the river were a hotbed of settlement. I have several families that "blew through"those counties traveling onward mostly to one or two counties in SE Minn. Iowa was such a great place, can never see why they went onward. Land must have been cheaper in MN. I had mentioned Thomas thinking they might have been vaguely related, which I now know they are not. Many thanks for your detailed information. A great help. My group is well defined in Ohio, and now narrowed to NJ origins. Another John Robbins and his wife Elizabeth Repine were there on a tax list and census too. He also was a shoemaker. And there were Bronsons in Blacklick Township as well. Another son, Ezekiel Robbins, states in his will he was from New Jersey. Ruby's parents were Mary Ellen Robbins and Henry Miller. Mary Ellen Robbins parents were James Robbins and Lucetta Doss. (James Robbins born Mercer County, Penn.)Anyway, Ruby was a large woman. Big-boned. But not really that short either. I have photos of Mary Ellen Robbins too...she was a slight woman. James Robbins was in the 20th. Iowa civil war regiment; but alas no photo of him I have been able to find. However, by my civil war research, most soldiers of the time were only 5' 6" or so anyway. Thats why Lincoln was so tall compared to everyone elase. By the way, my Doss line goes back to Stephen Doss living in Kentucky near the Lincolns in 1812. Greenberry Doss, son of Stephen and Permilia Cundiff Doss; and his brother Elisha Doss. Moved to Indiana from Hardin County, Kentucky. Seems Greenberry Doss moved to Indiana first; foloowed by brother Elisha Doss. Included are early land records, marriage records, and census for Elisha Doss of 1850. (Of course Greenberry Doss was in Linn County, Iowa by 1849.) Greenberry Doss marries Eliza Mikels Nov. 14, 1835. He receives land, 40 more acres, Nov. 20, 1835. I assume it is Eliza Mikels dowry. And since a John Mikels also owns land in section 14 of Franklin Township, could be Eliza Mikels brother or father. Although, William Mikels could be father too? Another Mikels researcher could not define Eliza Mikels parents. There are a number of Elizas in the records of Montgomery County, Indiana. Do not think it is especially a short moniker name for Elizabeth at all. Elisha Doss married Susanna Peterson March 6, 1839. Notice in the 1850 census for Sugar Creek Township, Montgomery County, Indiana....that Petersons are surrounding the Elisha Doss family. I assume Susannah Peterson's father is the Solomon Peterson. I included the bio of Joe Ward Mikels because it was so interesting as a Mexican War veteran; and states his birth place was near Darlington, Indiana. Lucetta Doss (1838-1887) and here brother Thomas Doss, children of Greenberry and Eliza Mikels Doss by Iowa records; also both born near Darlington, Indiana. Several other men in Montgomery County, Indiana has the first name of Greenberry, and even just Berry. Have never found burial or death of Eliza Mikels Doss. But Greenberry Doss re-marries in Linn County, Iowa in 1849; to an Elizabeth Cook. Maybe she died on the way to Iowa? Lucetta Doss marries James Robbins...dau. Mary Ellen Robbins marries Henry Miller; Ruby Miller marries Art Russell; parents of Daren Russell, my father. Steven Russell Iowa
