From: erroldme at vermontel.net (Virginia B. Coursen) Date: Thu, 1 Jul 1999 15:59:10 -0400 Subject: [lake-surname] LAKE Ref. II. (fwd) I have found a chapter in the History of Bath [Maine] by Henry Wilson Owen that is called Clarke and Lake. "Major Thomas Clarke and Captain Thomas Lake were two 17th century Boston Merchants who were gifted with more then ordinary vision and enterprise... From the Indians and others they purchased vast tracts of land on both sides of the Kennebec and Androscoggin Rivers, and east of the Sagadahock they acquired all of Woolwich, and all of Arrowsic Island , and some other parcels. " This land would be bath Maine and Georgetown Maine now. They built a fort, had mills, and other dwellings. Thomas Lake grandson was Sir Bybye Lake. There is more about the growth of the area and how the more people came and such. It stated in the next chapter the Capt. Lake was killed on Parker's Island, fleeing from the Indians. Parker's Island is now Georgetown , Maine. My goal now is to find out if Tom is related to my Henry lake. This area is where many of my family came from but not on this side of the family. sincerely Virginia Coursen
