From: "Suzanne Taylor" Date: Sun, 27 Apr 2014 14:33:38 -0400 I don't know very much about James Lake, including anything about his parents. I believe he was born in Elkton, Cecil County MD, and died in Cecil County MD. He is buried in Wesley Chapel of Elk Neck Cemetery, Elk Neck, Cecil, MD with his wife Anna Segars. I've found 3 sons: * Reuben Lake b 1802 d 1882 (both in Chesapeake City, Cecil, MD) * Thomas Lake b 1803 - d 1855 (not sure where he was born but he died in Elkton, Cecil, MD) * Jesse Lake b abt 1807 - d 1882 (he may have been born in Delaware, no idea where he died) Reuben Lake married Rachel Boyce, and for them I've found 4 sons: * John T Lake b 1831 - d 1856 * Francis M Lake b d 1912 (both in MD) * Washington Columbus Lake b 1835 in Chesapeake City, Cecil, MD - d 1922 in Philadelphia * William James Lake b 1837 in MD - d 1919 Washington Columbus Lake married Catherine Morford, I've found 9 children: * John T Lake b 1861 - d 1862 * William Henry Lake b 1863 - d 1897 * Washington Columbus Lake b 1864 - d 1929 * Reuben Ridgeway Lake b 1866 in Delaware - d 1953 in Pennsylvania * James Morford Lake b 1867 - d 1943 * Rachel Cora Lake b 1871 - d 1882 * Charles Parker Wesley Lake b 1874 - d 1952 * Almer E Lake b 1879- d 1800 * Grace Lake b 1880 - d 1882 Reuben Ridgeway Lake married Florence Mae Black, they had 7 children: * Willis Stanley Lake b 1893 - d 1947 (born and died in Pennsylvania) * Owen Palmer Lake b 1894 - d 1983 * Parker Black Lake b 1896 - d 1987 * Marion Elizabeth Lake b 1900 - d 1948 * Florence Mae Lake b 1903 - d 1981 * John Leroy Lake b 1907 - d 1980 * Harold Morgan Lake b 1912 - d 1981 Willis Stanley Lake married Ethel Madora Moore, they had one child (my father): * Robert Stanley Lake b 1923 - d 2014 After we last corresponded and you had said my dad didn't match up very well with any of the known Lakes, I went back and looked at his Family Finder results. The surname "MacGregor" kept popping up, so I asked to join that family project as well. It turns out that Dad was quite a good match to the MacGregors. Further digging revealed what might be the root cause. "An Act of the Scottish Parliament from 1617 stated[6] (translated into modern English): "It was ordained that the name of MacGregor should be abolished and that the whole persons of that name should renounce their name and take some other name and that they nor none of their name and that they nor none of their posterity should call themselves Gregor or MacGregor under pain of death ..." So now it looks somewhat likely that we are actually MacGregors, though I don't know that it will ever be proved. We joined the McGregor DNA project a few years ago at the suggestion of the admin, and they've confirmed that our Y-DNA has the S690 marker of Clan Gregor.  They're building a tree and hoping to map the Y branches to historical branches of the clan.  You can read about their work here: http://themacgregordnaproject.blogspot.com/ [themacgregordnaproject.blogspot.com].  James Lake had five children: Reuben, Thomas, Jesse, Francis, and Orpah.  It's been a while since I researched them but they're documented on WikiTree by me and another descendant.  Here's the link to James' profile:  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lake-1565 [www.wikitree.com]. Hope this helps! Dianne Date: Sat, 11 Sep 2021 10:38:21 -0400 From: Suzanne Taylor To: 'Marshall Lake' , 'Dianne Lake' Subject: RE: James LAKE (1770-1856) Hi Marshall, There is a bit more I can add: James was married to Ann/Anna Segars, who had a brother named Reuben. She was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Segar, and her other siblings were Catherine, Jeremiah, Joseph, Francis, Mary Ann, and possibly, Ann. So 'Reuben' showing up in a Lake line makes sense in this case. They lived in Maryland and I have a map that shows land belonging to a Thomas Lake in Elk Neck, which is now a state park. Apologies for the McGregor shock- I though I'd told you about it. That whole twist started when I noticed that our dad was an 'ok' but not 'great' match in the Lake project. As he was coming up with so many McGregor matches, I contacted that project and after some review, they accepted him and inserted him into the matrix with a new SNP. Since then there have been 2 others with that SNP, one of whom is the US admin for the McGregor project. If you've had your DNA analyzed, it might be worth contacting them to see where you land. Sue
