From: "Joseph E. Lake" Date: Sun, 28 Aug 2005 13:03:42 -0700 LAKE DNA Project ... 2) My possible "Most Distant Ancestor" presently (assumed) known is already on your list (Line #4; Kit #36265). That entry does not carry my name of course. I don't know what your concerns are on this subject, but your present listing #4 needs some correcting, or inclusion of additional qualifications. The year 1658 probably derives from a listing in the Gust Skordas volume, Early Settlers in Maryland (or similar title) and the Skordas (former Asst. Director of MD Archives) entry derives from a MD land patent dated 1658 (of which I have a copy) in which a John Lake and 11 other individuals are claimed as entitling the patent applicant, Robert Slye of St Marys Co, MD to headrights for each of the dozen people. The survey and warrant followed and Slye received credit for the dozen individuals as I recall. I do not know that the subject John Lake was born in England, and since he would have probably signed an indenture to earn passage, the "born circa 1658" also seems a big reach to me. The subject John Lake could have been born in Virginia and "imported" to MD for the headright claim. According to what I read, this happened frequently. I have seen this same specific John Lake error in several gedcoms on the internet and my courteous requests for source info have resulted in no answers. There are hundreds, maybe thousands, of Internet posted gedcoms with the same fatal flaws as you may probably agree. Further I have not been able, nor has anyone else whom I've queried, to close the time gap from 1658 to 1732. The latter date is the date of a will (Vol 6, MD Calendar of Wills) for John Leake, Leonardtown Innholder. I have never found paper/factual connections between 1658 and 1732, altho it makes sense to me. Beyond 1732 the trail improves, but could use some additional shoring up (the trail for "my" line goes from there to Fauquier Co, VA). It is wrong, at this time and based on what I (emphasize "I") know to make a definitive claim to be an descendant of 1658 John Lake of Maryland.
